Question about the safes on Oceania

`So I planned this cruise q long time ago, and now it is 2 weeks away. On my list of things to bring I have written string to secure the safe. I remember someone posting something about need ing to use string somehow to make the safe easier to use, but I cannot remember what it is, and can't find the post about it. Anyone know? If I need string, how much? Thanks!

Hi Crim,

 

The safe is a large steel box with a door in the face.

 

The door has a keypad and a handle.

 

You set your own pass code, and then close the door.

 

You enter your pass code to open the door again.

 

I see no need for string. The lock is to strong for you to pull it open. Also, Oceania can break into it in an emergency.

Thanks IRA, I am wondering if the door opens up, and people were thinking the string held the door open while you put things in it? It's the only thing I can possible think of.

On the Preisman's review of the Riviera, they stated the following -- this might be what you are thinking of.

 

"The safe did present a small problem in that it did not have a handle. After putting in the code to unlock the door, it would not pop open. Carol solved the problem by putting a long string over the door with both ends hanging out of the safe when the door was shut and locked. Then, when the code to unlock was entered, she could use the string to pull the door open."

Aha, that could make sense for recommending the string. But we've never encountered such a problem with the safe on 3 Renaissance cruises and 14 on Oceania. So the Preisman's may just have had a faulty safe.

 

One time we did have to ask Oceania to open the safe for us. I don't remember the exact details but I'm guessing that we'd mis-entered our code and then couldn't repeat it. Hence the need for official help.

IMO, there is nothing wrong with Oceania safes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the safes on the larger ships do not have a handle so sometimes getting it to pop open can be an issue ...plus it is up high

 

on the R- ships they have a handle so you can open it easily

Yes, that is what I had seen - the Preismans couldn't get the safe open - thank you all!

On our recent Riviera cruise, the safe door opened nicely without Carol needing to put a string in it. On our first Riviera cruise, the door didn't move out enough for her to be able to open it easily. I would just tap it a few time and it would finally come out enough. Since there isn't a handle on the safe, the string did help in that cabin. I have to assume that the safe was defective in that cabin.

I always consider to string piano wire or fishing line as a trip wire for a pair of claymores, ... for extra secrurity.

 

Only problem is now, TSA wont let me pack them.... Seeeesh..... how picky can they get.

Depending which side of the ship the safe door is facing, just ring the bridge and ask the Captain to turn sharply to port or starboard and the door will open with the motion of the ship.
