Carnival unexpectedly added another port to my itinerary...why?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know some of the reasons why a cruise line would add a port to the itinerary without explanation? Carnival added a port to my cruise itinerary, therefore taking away a sea day. This is only a 5 day cruise and now we will only have one day at sea...sea days are my fav :(

The nerve of them! An outrage. If you want the extra sea day, stay on the ship. :)

I agree....just stay on the ship. We have gotten in the habit lately of picking one of the ports to stay on the ship. We get to enjoy the ship like sea-day (minus the casino and stores) but the ship is empty so we can enjoy the places that are packed on the sea-days. Like everything on the Lido Deck. Ports we don't want to go to make the perfect ship days for us.

This is Carnival Elation out of Jacksonville on March 11, 2017. It was supposed to be just Nassau and Half Moon Cay but now they have added Freeport. Fun days at sea are not the same at all when the ship is in port!

But Freeport is such a beautiful port!

Probably testing it out, I wish it happened on our Elation Cruise this December, I'd love to see another port or have port day spa discounts.

I realize you may not have as many activities on a port day vs Sea day but at least they are paying the port fees.

Probably because Carnival misses Half Moon 50% of the time. If they only hit one port of two they would have to compensate, this way they only have to give you the 16 cent port cost back.

Why do they miss half moon cay 50% of the time?

True its it the same. Less crowding and hardly any chair hogs around the pool.

Complaining about more value for your money? The nerve of them!!!!

There might be less activities on board during a day in port, but you can enjoy the rest of them without a crowd

I could be wrong (and often am)----but I believe that Freeport is an area which has repair facilities. It could be that the ship will need a "tune-up" while there. It is a nice area when there are no downpours, such as we had on our last stop there.

Exactly this! I've even heard (cause you know how these boards can be!) that they purposefully make Freeport a port for their older ships just in case.

If they've been having an issue with some part of the ship its better for them to drop in there for a few hours and get it taken are of right away instead of waiting for it to break!

Make the best of it and enjoy the ship while it's empty!

I would be thrilled with the decision to add another port. For ports that we've been to more than once we generally stay on the ship and it's wonderful being able to enjoy a less crowded ship.

It's when they take a port away that bothers me, like they did when we booked the Freedom. One of the main reasons we booked it was because they were going to San Juan. Then they took it away and gave us the excuse of "port congestion" as the reason. We were very disappointed. Still had a great cruise, but hated missing a port we were looking forward to going to and had never been to before.

Sorry, but Grand Bahamas Shipyard isn't JiffyLube. You can't just drop in and expect the mechanics to service you. First off, they don't stock parts, or even a lot of steel if you need structural work, you have to arrange to have it delivered specifically for your job. Second, the yard workers are 90% of the time busy on other ships. And third, the specialist technicians aren't shipyard employees, they are sub-contracted by the ship owner, and you need to schedule these guys months in advance.

Besides which there are about 50 engineers onboard who are doing nothing but maintenance and repair all day every day, keeping the equipment running, so you don't need to run to a "service station". Even major engine overhauls are typically done while the ship is in service, and no one knows that the ship is without one engine for 2-3 weeks.

Even diving services are better in the Miami area than Freeport. When divers are needed in GB Shipyard, they typically come from Miami for the job.
