The Inaugural Vista's Official Trippingpara Mayhem in the Mediterranean Review

Recommended Posts

Guy’s Burgers/Blue Iguana: We ate a couple lunches at Guy’s and a couple breakfasts at Blue Iguana. Hot diggity-dang that food was good!! Okay, so I’ve had better burgers before, but those burgers certainly weren’t free! I was a big fan of the Ringer burger and the fries were excellent. I was a little afraid at first because there was no menu listed at Guys. Found out a couple days later when workers were installing it that it was sent to Miami and not Italy and it had just arrived (along with some surf boards). Now the Blue Iguana breakfast burritos were absolutely friggin’ outstanding!! I solely place all of the blame of my six-pack abs warping into a keg on them! We rarely had to wait for either place and the service was excellent as well. Grade: “A++”

Seafood Shack: This new eatery is located aft of the Lido Marketplace next to Pizzeria del Capitano. Coming from New England, it was a nice slice of home floating around the middle of the Mediterranean. The menu included lobster and shrimp, crab cakes, clams and was open for lunch and dinner with wait service. This is an upcharge eatery with a la carte pricing. We never did eat here but it did look pretty good and we heard from several other passengers that it was in fact quite delicious. Grade…”N/A”.

Pizzeria del Capitano: This little pizzeria is located aft of the Lido Marketplace right next to the Seafood Shack and serves pizza slices 24 hours a day and is complimentary. As usual, this was busy every time we went there. I did order a few slices and it was quite good. Traditional thin slice. Since it is made to order, it does take quite a bit of time to get your food. Grade…”A”.

Ji Ji Asian Kitchen: This is a specialty Asian cuisine that serves dinner only and has a surcharge of $15 pp for adults and $5 for kids. This is located across from Cucina del Capitano on the Panorama Deck (Deck 11). During lunch this becomes the Mongolian Wok. We tried to go once during lunch and it was packed. We had reservations here after our port in Palermo. We chose this day to eat here mainly because we had a short day in port and knew that we would be back on the ship early. The service was outstanding and the décor was very attractive. The chef came out to talk to us about the meal and service. He explained how the dishes were prepared and seemed to genuinely enjoy talking with the patrons there. The food itself was delicious! Well worth the upcharge. Grade…”A++”.

Bonsai Sushi: This complimentary Japanese restaurant was located on the Promenade Deck (Deck 5). We never did get a chance to eat here but we did sit across from it a lot in the evening at the Alchemy Bar. Grade…”N/A”.

Cucina del Capitano: This is a reservations-only Italian restaurant that features the favorite dishes of the captain and senior officers. The menu is a la carte priced. However, it is free during lunch and features the Pasta Bar. This is located on Deck 11 (Panorama Deck). If I was cruising in the Caribbean, I would probably love this place. But when you’re spending so much time in Italy as we did, it just couldn’t compare to the real deal. This is not to say that their food was inferior to anything we got in Italy, there’s just something to be said about sitting in a centuries old piazza sipping on some local vino, enjoying a heaping plate of pasta! Incomparable! Nonetheless, we did eat here during one of our sea days and the food was very good. I hear that dinner is even better. Grade…”A” for lunch. “N/A” for dinner.

Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse: Ah yes, the steakhouse. Yum! We are big fans of the steakhouse and of course, had an early seating on our first day to take advantage of the free bottle of wine on embarkation day. It is located on Deck 5 and offers outdoor seating as well. Our reservation was delayed on the embarkation day due to a delay in the muster drill. However, we went right after drill was over and were only delayed by about 20 minutes. No biggie. The service was outstanding and the food was even better! We heard that they were swamped in the later evening and the service took a hit due to it. We did not see any of that during the early service. We highly recommend this place! Grade…”A+++++”.

Chef’s Table: This was our first time enjoying the Chef’s Table. This is also the first ship with a dedicated area for this fabulous culinary experience. It is housed inside the main galley. I will discuss this in more detail during the diary portion of this review. If you get a chance to do this, do it!! At least once!! Grade…”A+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++”.

ENTERTAINMENT: We actually did not partake in too much of the entertainment options on this cruise. We did see the Newlywed Game on the tv which was hysterical as usual and we saw Bobby Borgia the magician which was really good. Who knew that he’s from my home town! We also watched the ventriloquist who was really funny and of course, we had to take in the Hairy Chest contest (always entertaining). Probably my favorite part of the entertainment was the roving musicians. It was awesome to be eating dinner in the Lido and suddenly have an accordion player singing to you (he was really good!) or have a string quartet suddenly appear in the atrium. My DW loved watching them. The accordion player seemed to be everywhere. He was always playing something different and he also played guitar too. Very talented. It is hard for me to grade the entertainment as a whole since we barely partook in it but what we did see was enjoyable, so I’ll grade it as an “A”.

SPORTS SQUARE (w/SkyRide): This is the best sports area we’ve seen on a Carnival ship. It has its own bar (always a bonus!), SkyGreens mini golf course, Ping-Pong tables, a small bowling alley, a basketball court, volleyball court and a soccer court. There was even a pool table that you play with your feet. Yep, your feet! It’s actually a giant pool table at ground level with small soccer-like balls that you try to kick into the pockets. Very fun but incredibly hard! There is also the SkyTrack (jogging track), the SkyFitness (outdoor gym) and on Deck 14 the SkyCourse (suspended ropes course) and SkyRide the new bicycle ride in the sky. This was awesome! Carnival promotes this as a roller coaster at sea – well, I’m not so sure about that. It’s really an oval track that allows 2 “bikes” to ride suspended side by side some 150 ft. above sea level. Call it what you want, but I call it “fun”! Grade…”A+”

HAVANA POOL & BAR: This new area is located all the way aft on Deck 5. The pool is only open to those staying in the new Havana cabins until 5 pm each day. From 5 pm on, it is open to all passengers. The special access doesn’t really do much on port days but was really nice on the 3 sea days. Of course, I’m assuming that since we didn’t have access there during those days! The bar is just forward of the Havana Pool and is an authentic Cuban themed bar that served Cuban cocktails and pastries and coffee. The Havana Bar was gorgeous! We stopped in here a couple times but never made it out to the Havana pool area. We did however look down on it from the aft adult pool area above it.

CARNIVAL MULTIPLEX w/IMAX: The IMAX Theater is a 3 deck high screen with first run movies. The theater is accessible on Decks 6 and 7. The Thrill Theater is located next to the IMAX Theater on Deck 6. Popcorn and snacks are a la carte priced. We went to see the horror thrill theater show during one of the sea days. It was pretty cool, nothing spectacular but entertaining nonetheless. The IMAX showed newer releases as well as some top rated older movies. On the inaugural it showed in the evenings, Batman vs. Superman, Star Wars and Deadpool. There were also the traditional 3D IMAX underwater and animal movies as well during the day. There were still the Dive-in Movies on the big screen on the Lido Deck at night and yes, the popcorn was still available for free at the Red Frog Bar. Grade…”B”.

RED FROG PUB AND BREWERY: This is located on the Promenade Deck (Deck 5) just aft of the midship elevators. The big thing on the Vista was the addition of the actual brewery aboard. Talk about some fresh brew! I, unfortunately missed the brewery tour which I heard was very good. I was bummed that the stout brew was not ready but it should be by now. We also had our Roll Call Meet-n-Greet here. This place always seemed to be hopping whenever we would drop by. Grade…”A”.

PIANO BAR: This is located on the Promenade Deck (Deck 5) on the starboard side between the forward and midship elevators. Ben Gentry was the man tickling the keys and he was amazing. The design of the central bar/piano area was very odd. There was a giant pillar in the middle that blocked the view of a couple seats from the piano player. Odd. Nonetheless, we had a blast here! As Ben would say…”we need a baaarrrtend-der!” Grade...A-flippin’-plus!!

ALCHEMY BAR: This is also located on the Promenade Deck (Deck 5) opposite of Bonsai Sushi. If you fancy a fancy drink, then this is THE place to be! Maria, Ioana and Jade were amazing! Always smiling and fast with the drinks. Want a drink that’s not on the menu? No problem! These ladies kept the drinks flowing and witty banter going. Highly recommend! Grade…”A++”

WATERWORKS: This is Carnival’s largest water park. It is located on Deck 12 and consists of 2 different water slides (the 455 ft. long Kaleid-O-Slide and the 300 ft. long Twister), water dumping station and a hodgepodge of other water soaking play areas. The Kaleid-O-Slide uses an intertube to go down and is open about halfway down right about where the giant bucket doses the crowd below. But watch out! If you time it right (or wrong depending on how you look at it), you will get a surprising drenching as the bucket swings back towards you. The Twister was shockingly fast! You start off normal and then you suddenly pick up speed and about a 2/3 of the way down you suddenly pick up even more speed. You end up hitting the bottom pool at a high rate of speed. We sat and watched one mother go down this slide about 10 times in a row wearing the biggest smile I’ve ever seen! The inaugural cruise was a bit on the cool side but I could see this area being mobbed during the height of the Caribbean season. Nonetheless, it was great to cool off and was perfect for children and adults alike, so I’ll grade it as an “A”.

SERENITY: The Serenity Deck is located on Deck 15 (the top deck). There are two cantilevered whirlpools and a plethora of the standard shaded seating, hammocks, sun loungers, chaise loungers and sunbeds. This was the prettiest of the Serenity Decks that I’ve seen. Very tranquil. It also makes a great area for sailaways. There was also a bar and even a Salad Bar which we thought was a nice touch for some simple grub when lying out, so I’ll grade it as an “A”.

Next up...Staff, Spa, Casino, etc.

Did anyone else have a hard time finding the Deli? I'm used to the deli being in a separate area, usually all the way aft or on a side somewhere. I walked all the way around The Marketplace, out the back (where I discovered the Pizza and Seafood places) and back in. Decided I'd just get a late omelette. After I ordered, I looked over and there it was, right next to the omelette station! :o

Great review so far, I do have a couple questions though

Bonsai Sushi- You said that it was complimentary I thought that it was paid alacarte, at least it was on the Breeze

Cucina-- You said it was alacarte, this one on the Breeze was $15 for a 4 course meal.

Ji Ji- I am glad you enjoyed it. How did the cost work as far as the food do you get a course from each section? Can't wait to try this

Thanks

Lele100,

You are correct. This was clearly a case of where my fingers and brain were not communicating very well with each other. Bonsai Sushi is ala carte. Here is a link to their menu that shows the prices for each item. http://www.carnival.com/onboard/cruise-food/~/media/CCLUS/Images/pdf/BonsaiSushiMenupdf.ashx.

Cucina is a flat fee of $15 per person (the same for JiJi's).

JiJi's is served in a traditional Asian manner which is family style. Since it was my DW and I, we got to pick 2 selections from every section (Appetizers/Soups; Entrees; Sides; and Deserts). It was absolutely delicious!

STAFF: As always, the staff onboard the Vista was excellent. From what I was told by a Carnival trainer, only the best at each position get the opportunity to sign a contract on the newest ships. Some get to volunteer, others are selected. It showed here. Now keep in mind that this was the inaugural cruise so the crew was still learning some things as was evidenced by the waiters in the MDRs walking around with table maps. There was also some communication issues the first couple days with port embarkation. We were hanging out with a member of the entertainment team and we got to listen to a whole plethora of radio calls come into him with different instructions on what to do with the passengers that were waiting to disembark at the port that morning. It was actually pretty funny (as a bystander) to listen to what the employees have to deal with from their own bosses.

The crew at Guest Services were great too as I witnessed a whole slew of people degrading and generally being downright mean and rude to these people and all they got was a smile in return. Seeing how this was the inaugural and the crew had little time to prepare for 4,000 passengers, I would grade them: “A-”

SPA: The spa is located on Deck 12 and offers Thermal Suites including an infrared sauna, a dry sauna, an Aroma Steam Bath, sensory showers, changing rooms, Relaxation Room, Treatment Rooms and a Fitness Center with a separate cycling studio. Even though Lady Trip and Trippette had a less than ideal outing on our last cruise with the spa staff, we decided to give them another try and to splurge with a couples’ Elemis Aroma Spa Seaweed Massage. That’s a fancy way of saying they wrapped us up like mummies in some smelly seaweed.

OK look, I’m a very stereotypical guy. I like cars, tools, guns and football and not necessarily in that order. My favorite smell is Hoppes No. 9 (mix in a little freshly cut wood scent for an increased effect). In other words, I like to keep things simple. For example, what happened to the primary color wheel? I mean, what the heck is “fuchsia” for crying out loud! “Boysenberry”?? What the "BLEEP"? The “pleasures” of a spa are pretty similar to me. My finger nails are too short to be manicured, nobody is touching my feet (at least not without getting kicked in the face!), and those “deep tissue” massages feel more like Mike Tyson is using my back for target practice than some beautiful Swedish masseuse gently easing your troubles away like you see in the movies.

The last time I got a massage was when I lived in Beijing, China. It went something like this:

ME: “Hi, I would like a haircut”

LITTLE CHINESE MASSEUSE: “No problem. Take off clothes.”

ME: “What??”

LITTLE CHINESE MASSEUSE: “You take off clothes now.”

ME: “But I just want a haircut!”

LITTLE CHINESE MASSEUSE: “Yes, I understand English. Take off clothes.”

ME: “What the heck do my clothes have to do with having my hair cut? I only want the hair up here cut,” as I desperately pointed to my noggin’.

LITTLE CHINESE MASSEUSE: “You silly man. Take off clothes!”

This went on for some time until a giant of a man named Bobo walked in and explained that a massage was part of their standard spa haircut package and I was to only take off my shirt. If I wanted to wake up the next day and have my nose located in the same area of my face that it currently resided in, then my pants needed to stay on. Of course I haven’t been to a barber or a spa ever since!

Needless to say, Lady Trip was quite shocked when I surprised her with this spa treatment. She never expected to ever have me as a spa partner. Unless that massage table just happened to be located on the sidelines of Gillette Stadium during a Patriots game and the cheerleaders were the masseuse! Ahhhhh…..huh? Oh sorry, I drifted off there for a second. Anyways, the massage was fabulous. All of my aches and pains from the heavy touring that we’ve been doing so far had melted away. Of course, they tried to sell us a ton of overpriced spa products that I would never ever touch or allow any of my friends to even know that I possessed them. However, I was far too relaxed to even care and simply gave them my credit card and even signed up for another couples’ session! Our spa therapists, Simona and Elma were outstanding! Overall grade… A+++.

Next up...Miscellaneous ship areas and items.

Ok, this got me hooked. Very funny. Subscribing and can't wait for the rest.

P.S. Hope Ben is still the Piano Man come September. Have seen him on a couple of cruises and he is the best so far.

CASINO: We donated a good portion of our earnings to Carnival in the casino. I did hear a lot of people complaining in other threads about the amount of cigarette smoke in the casino due to the more stringent smoking policy now in effect. I have been told that the Vista has a vastly improved filtration system for the casino to improve the smell of smoke. Whatever they did, it seemed to work pretty well. Could you smell smoke? Absolutely. Did my clothes smell like smoke when I walked out of there? Yes. However, I didn’t find the smoke overwhelming and I have a pretty bad aversion to the smell ever since I quit smoking almost 10 years ago. This was also the largest casino I’ve seen on a Carnival ship. It really reminded me of a Vegas casino. All it needed were a bunch of scantily clad showgirls parading around. I certainly would have spent more time in the casino if they were there! At the casino bar was another Vista Dreamscape like the one in the Atrium. This one only spanned two decks instead of the three in the Atrium. Grade… “A”.

SMOKING: The smoking areas were in the casino, starboard side of Deck 10 forward and starboard side of Deck 5 aft. The smoking areas were very nice and appeared to be very comfortable. There appeared to be plenty of shade and cover from the weather but also ample opportunity to catch some rays as well. Please note that I am a now a non-smoker (quit over 10 years ago) and did not partake in any of the smoking areas so I did not truly experience the comfyness, ease of use, convenience, etc. However, as a non-smoker, we were never bothered by smoke nor did we hear any complaints from smokers about the lack of smoking areas. Non-smoker grade: “A”.

MUSIC: There was always some sort of live music going on somewhere on the ship at any given moment. The musicians were quite good and played a wide variety of music. Now you won’t hear modern rap music or heavy metal or hard rock since this is a family cruise and must appeal to a large audience. They tended to play a lot of older pop music, some modern dance, and a few country songs as well. All the songs tended to be very popular and commonly heard on the radio. They were very easy to identify and to dance/sing to and really helped to keep the “fun” vibe going. I think my favorite part were the roving musicians. As a musician myself, I found the various musicians to be very talented and versatile. Grade… “A”.

SECRET DECKS: The Vista has a variety of secret decks including the Serenity Deck on Deck 12 and the gym on Spa Deck (Deck 11) as well as 10 and 9 (if I remember correctly). As usual, these secret decks were almost always empty. I don’t think I ever saw more than 10 people on any of the secret decks at one time with the exception of when we left Malta. Just prior to departure, Matt (CD) announced that Malta was going to give us a royal send off and to be sure to get out on deck to see it. They started with a band and flagbearers in full regalia marching by the ship. As Vista began to set sail and slowly sailed by the Upper Barrakka Gardens, they set off a full cannon salute. It was pretty awesome! Great place to watch us pull in or out of port. Also a great spot to star gaze as there are no lights forward of the bridge.

CARNIVAL’S HUB APP: This was our first time being on a ship that was set up for the Hub App. I mainly downloaded it to use for the new Pixels program for photos. However, there were some other really cool things on it as well. First, it gave you a countdown clock before the trip. Very useful for annoying your employees and co-workers especially if you downloaded it onto your work phone like I did. You could also chat with others and get the Fun Times too. Pretty cool. Grade…”A”

PIXEL PHOTOS: Carnival Vista is the first ship in Carnival’s fleet to move over to all digital photos in Pixels (their photo store). You just grab an eye-pad or use your Hub App on your eye-phone to view your photos. If you want one, just select it and click purchase and voilà, those photos magically appear in your cabin the following day. You can also purchase digital version of the photos too. Very cool! We purchased a couple digital only photos from our formal night for $10 each. Grade…”A++”

PORTS OF CALL: Trieste, Italy; Dubrovnik, Croatia; Kotor, Montenegro; Athens, Greece; Crete, Greece; Valletta, Malta; Palermo, Sicily; Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy; Florence/Pisa (Livorno), Italy; Marseilles, France; and Barcelona, Spain. We flew in a couple days early and spent time in Venice, and Trieste, Italy as well as touring around Slovenia and then spent a couple days post cruise in Barcelona, Spain. We were originally scheduled to make a port of call in Izmir, Turkey in-between our stops in Athens and Crete, however Carnival cancelled this port of call 3 weeks before we departed due to a U.S. State Department warning and concerns of passengers. We were quite bummed about this especially since Izmir was the only non-EU port of call on our itinerary which meant that we would now be subject to VAT taxation while on the ship too. Nonetheless, we didn’t let it ruin our vacation. Just gotta roll with the punches baby! Then 9 days before the Vista sets sail and 4 days before we headed over the pond, we got quite the surprise.

LADY TRIP: “Woo-hoo!!” she shouted piercing the quiet tranquility of our house.

ME: “Huh? Wha..? Dang nabbit! What in the world is all of this racket!? Woman, why are you making all of this noise and not making me a sammich!?” Of course I didn’t dare to actually say that. I married a little hot blooded Italian woman. Need I say more? In reality I only said “huh?” But this didn't sound quite as macho and manly.

LADY TRIP: “We’re going to Montenegro!”

ME: “Monte who? Monte Hall? Isn’t he dead?” I shouted back.

LADY TRIP: “What?” Sigh. “Montenegro. The country. They replaced our stop in Turkey with Montenegro!”

ME: “Monte Hall did what with a turkey?”

Being the smart woman that Lady Trip is, she quickly dropped the subject and assumed that I’d figure things out eventually. Which I did. It was approximately the instant that I set foot onto the dock of the medieval town of Kotor. Which by the way, doesn’t look a damn thing like Ephesus! Only a fool would confuse those two ports!! Anyways, where was I? Oh yeah, ATTENTION INAUGURAL CRUISERS: ITINERARY CHANGE! To our surprise Kotor, Montenegro was added! We were super excited. This was an exhaustive itinerary but one that makes for a trip of a lifetime! Grade: “A+++++”

CAMERAS: On this cruise, I used my brand new Sony A99 dSLT with vertical battery grip and a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 and a Tamron 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 lenses as my main camera. The expensive battery grip came free when I bought the camera. I guess the store owner was so happy that I just paid for his two kids to attend Harvard that he decided to throw the grip in too. But it did give me an additional dozen or so more knobs, switches and buttons to play with so I was happy with it!

We also used the Olympus TG-3 and the GoPro 4 Silver. You can never have too many cameras my grandpappy used to say! Actually, he didn’t say that considering he passed away quite some time before I was even a twinkle in my pappy’s eye. But I’d like to think that’s what he would have said to me if he had a chance. Plus, it’s sometimes nice to not have to lug around all of my dSLT equipment. The bonus with the GoPro was its ability to use a selfie stick (did I just say that?!) as well as my head mount so I could catch some video as I strolled around the ship and as I rode the SkyRide. Be sure to check out the diary portion of this review for those videos! The GoPro was also great for catching those extreme wide angle shots of buildings and scenes when we were in the tight quarters of old medieval streets of Europe. Places were a standard camera would never be able to capture everything.

I carried all of my camera gear in my Pacsafe V25 Camsafe anti-theft camera backpack along with Pacsafe’s Carrysafe V200 anti-theft shoulder strap. A little paranoid possibly?? I’ve traveled to Europe before and am well aware of the skills of the pickpockets and theft crews over there. I spent a lot of money on my camera gear and was not about to lose not only my cameras but all of the memories inside of them! Wait a tic…is this starting to sound like a promotional ad or what?!

Next up...The Review...with Photos!!! (I know, I know...finally!)
