Hi,

We will be on the Getaway next week. What is the best VOIP to use? We currently have apps for skype, google voice, Iplum and just added NCL's IConciege. We have a business and will mainly use email to stay in touch. However we may need to call the office. What would be our best option? Also what are the costs?

Thank you,

Sandy

You see the "Stay Connected" tabs - Cabin Messaging (free), Messenger (paid, extra) and Phone (paid, extra) - fees & extra charges would be posted against the Stateroom's Onboard Account, which you can & should review daily (or, from the in-room Interactive TV screen tab ... on newer ships with the upgraded system, as availabe).
What is "Cabin Messaging" ? I googled this, but nothing came back. No mention of this on google play nor apple itunes.

Cabin Messaging is one of the functions on one of the pull-down menu displayed on ship's stateroom interactive TV, you access those using the TV remote control. If I remember correctly, also displayed on the (free) iConcierge App - typical daily or special announcement from Shorex or CD, last minute changes, etc.

It is not for sending or receiving SMS or messages to other users or cabins - it's one-way broadcast messaging from NCL to passengers, etc.

The $7.95 to $12.95 fee is per cruise per device right? Not per day?

Correct, it's per device per duration of cruise (3 to 7 days, 9 or 10 days, 11 or 14 days, etc.) - doing B2B, you would pay twice, I believe.

Just to be clear, many of the basic features & functions on the iCon App are free of any extra charges or fees, texting & calling would incur this one-time fee. Calling ship-to-shore does NOT, just 79 cents per minute to call - caution, they might not hear you. The iCon App has its own "dialer" to put the calls thru, using the uniquely assigned 8 digits number (not your own cellular or VoIP/Skype/GV number linked to your own account ... alert anyone expecting you to call of this)

Per device fee has risen, lowest is $9.95 or 9.99 from what I've seen lately, and as high as $15.95 or 15.99 on either the Getaway or Escape from a recent review this month. Previously, the highest was 14.99 ...

Hello, NCL - your "App" has not been updated since late 2015, what's up !!!

I think iconcierge app for calling or a minimum texting other passengers on the cruise should be free. $10 to $15 per device is kinda steep. Maybe $10-15 per cabin would be more reasonable.

Sorry if this was mentioned above (I didn't have time to read everything). If you use the 79cents per minute feature from iconcierge to call the mainland and if you use the $4.99 per minute to call the mainland via cabin telephone caller ID when I called relatives showed Miami Florida. They did not pick up since they thought it was a junk call. So now they know to pick up. This was calling to the USA.

Planing super far ahead for a cruise of the Norwegian Gem leaving on Jan. 3:D. Our family does not want to get a plan for out of the U.S. so we were thinking about using the IConcerage app instead. We were wondering if they still had the app on the ship and how much it is per phone (we would be using it with 3 phones)for the Gem since we know it is different per ship. Thanks so much!:D

It was $9.99 on the EPIC on my Mediterranean sailings and worth every penny. Not only can you call/text each other, but other shipmates can phone you on your mobile on the iconcierge app from their room phone or house phone on the ship, I tested phoning my iPhone from the smoking room vice versa, and it worked both ways. It essentially makes your mobile phone an extension of the in-house phone system.

Yes you can reserve anything (tenders) on the app but you don’t need to pay for the fee to do that. The fee is just for texting and phoning intra-ship.

Almost Anything you can do on the in-room TVs booking-wise or by touch-screen on the phone, You can do on the app.

I even ordered room service pizza, walking back to room at 3 in the morning, just by dialing 00 from app! I was also able to call maintenance when I got locked out! So cool!

And i don’t know for sure, but I would assume OBC covers it. Even if it didn’t, you could always cash your OBC out at the casino as cash and then pay down your charges at guest services.

Hi all just seeking clarification as I am seeing some contradictory information on line. Does the text and call feature with iconcierge also work for android phones? We are travelling with a group and the majority of our group have samsung phones. Thanks!

If you can see the free iConcierge App and the newest "Cruise Norwegian" App in Apple's iTune & Google's Play Store, logical to say it has been approved for use and "should" work. Download & install them pre-cruise on your devices; and, check for any last minute update - I have them on our Motorola, Nexus, Blu & iPhone 5S; and, successfully ran them in general as recently as this November (minus the calling/texting.)

When are you cruising with your group ?? as the new "Cruise Norwegian" App has only been downloaded 5,000 times for Androids and currently, from other reports, good on 1 single ship in the NCL fleet, the Sky. Described as having more features ... rolling out to other ships, eventually.  :o Translation, it's still barely out of beta as a pilot rollout ... a group "chat" is supposed to be available.

WiFi networks on some ships are known to be better & more reliable than others - not knowing which ship & sailing timeline, not easy to be more definitive. For anyone that signed up for the optional paid features, feel free to request a refund & cancel the services onboard if it isn't working, in the form of OBC from the iCafe manager.

Thanks for your reply we are looking for the texting feature. Does this work with android, recognizing there may be a flat rate cost for the week?:D

Yes...just not very well. We had to kill the app and restart it every time we wanted to text. The phone feature never worked no matter what we tried.
