Some independent excursions say the only take Pesos or International Credit Cards for incidentals such as food and souvenirs. Where do you get pesos in cruise ports such as Cozumel and Costa Maya?

There will be cambio's (bank windows) at and around the pier. But will you have enough tie before your excursion.

Local tour operators & even street vendors at popular cruise ports generally will accept the mightly U.S. dollars with their "rough" exchange rates, might not be the best deal around, but it's convenient for small purchases.

Some options - look for a bank ATM near the port & withdraw a small amount, subject to the usual fees, exchange & conversion charges - be sure to alert your home bank as the early fraud detection system used by the banking network might otherwise block it or refuse to authorize.

Ask the crew members on the ship as they usually know about the local places for exchanging funds .

Ask around some of the hometown banks in Windy City that serve the Latino communities or even some of the brick-n-mortar travel agencies, some of them do it as a "public service" all the time.

Or, if you/someone in the family - neighbors are AAA members, consider using their Foreign Currency Exchange services ... easiest at a local participating office, call ahead to check first as online ordering & shipping will involve fees. http://ww2.aaa.com/scripts/WebObjects.dll/AAAOnline.woa?association=AAA&club=097&page=TravelMoneyHome&Key=travelmoney&zip=11354&stateprov=ny&city=flushing&devicecd=PC&referer=www.aaa.com

Most shops and restaurants will take USD or you can use a credit card; make sure the bank knows you will be using in the foreign countries. Carry small USD notes, they need to be clean and unmarked.

If you do need foreign currency in South America the change some small USD notes at a Cambio, they seem to be very common, no need to use street sellers.

We've cruised to Mexican ports on both coasts and they always take US dollars. Don't be shocked when you see something like the enclosed menu, they use the $ sign as we do but obviously the big numbers are pesos. This menu was from a cruise last September and the exchange given at the restaurant was 15 pesos / dollar which seemed fair enough.....

Mazatlan City -5

The point is, everywhere we went they accepted US dollars.
