ancientmariner Posted June 12, 2016 #2 Share Posted June 12, 2016 Milk is all UHT - it has to be for storage. I buy a pint of fresh at the first port to keep in the refrigerator.
GUT2407 Posted June 12, 2016 #3 Share Posted June 12, 2016 Every time I've seen a carton it's been UHT.
keithm Posted June 12, 2016 #4 Share Posted June 12, 2016 Hi All Is all milk UHT or do they use any pasteurised, yours Shogun Pretty much UHT. They've gotten pretty good at keeping the flavor more like standard milk, so for me it's not a problem.
Rare Cruise Raider Posted June 12, 2016 #5 Share Posted June 12, 2016 I never knew what UHT milk was before ... never even heard of it before this post. I had to look it up and realized I have it all the time. I learned something new! :)
Stevi Posted June 12, 2016 #6 Share Posted June 12, 2016 When I was a kid growing up in a small fishing village (in Fife) we used to use UHT when the regular milk supply ran dry. It tasted awful. Granted it is over 30 years later, but it's going to take a lot to convince me it tastes as like regular milk.
greenie082756 Posted June 12, 2016 #7 Share Posted June 12, 2016 Ultra-high temperature processing (UHT), ultra-heat treatment, or ultra-pasteurization[1] sterilizes food by heating it above 135 °C (275 °F) – the temperature required to kill spores in milk – for 1 to 2 seconds.[2] UHT is most commonly used in milk production, but the process is also used for fruit juices, cream, soy milk, yogurt, wine, soups, honey, and stews.[2] UHT milk was first developed in the 1960s and became generally available for consumption in the 1970s.[3] :)
tjwa Posted June 12, 2016 #8 Share Posted June 12, 2016 When I was a lad(over 55 years ago) it was called 'steralised milk' and it tasted awful. The milk on the ship is much improved.
Shogun Posted June 12, 2016 Author #9 Share Posted June 12, 2016 Hi All Just found a story about freezing pasteurised milk gives it a life span of a month, will need to ask chef next week how Princess deals with milk. yours Shogun
caber Posted June 12, 2016 #10 Share Posted June 12, 2016 We freeze the plastic milk bottles all the time at home. The milk is just the same when it defrosts.
cruising cockroach Posted June 13, 2016 #11 Share Posted June 13, 2016 (edited) Having grown up with it, I actually don't mind or even quite like the taste of UHT milk. Carnation used to sell these in cans. Lately, have been drinking the stuff in France (fresh milk is surprisingly rare there) and on a recent ship voyage, the supply of milk first came from Germany (where the ship's route was nowhere near) before switching to a Utah supplier (which advertised it as being handy to campers, military, survivalists/preppers).
