Kobe or Osaka, Japan

We are booked on the Millennium in October sailing from Yokohama to Hong Kong. The ship will overnight in Kobe.

 

Q: should we spend the first day in Kobe or would it be more worthwhile to spend the day in Osaka?

 

The second day we plan to spend in Kyoto.

 

Your advice would be appreciated.

If you get the chance to see the Great Buddha of Nara outside of Kyoto, go.

Agree one day in Kyoto and then if you can see Osaka Castle and Nara you will see most of the major sites. The second day, when we got back from the excursion we walked around Kobe.

If you have time take the train to Himeji castle. We did it from Kobe. Osaka Castle is good, but Himeji is more impressive. It is the largest in Japan. It was featured in The Last Samurai Movie and You Only Live Twice.

If, at the Port Terminal, what sights are walkable from the Port Terminal in Kobe?

 

We are planning to go to Himeji to see the castle on one day, and then to Kyoto the next day. For the day in Himeji, we will probably get back early enough to spend some time walking around near the port in the evening.

I don't remember the name of the terminal. Our ship was docked very close to a bridge. Also, there was a monorail station in the terminal that we took to a train station, which we purchased tickets to Himeji.

 

I don't think there was much to see walking from the terminal, but the monorail was there.

Agree, Himeji Castle is the best choice for a day trip from Kobe/Osaka. We knew we wouldn't have time to see what we wanted in Kyoto so chose Himeji instead. Not at all disappointed.
