ginger123snaps Posted July 1, 2016 #1 Share Posted July 1, 2016 We sail a lot to the carribean both eastern and western. Just wondering how does Bermuda compare? Its easy to fly from Texas to Florida or just sail out of Galveston....wondering if its worth the hassle to fly north to go to Bermuda? Are the casinos and shops on the ship open when docked in Bermuda? What about the pools and kids club? We typically sail for the ship but I would consider Bermuda if it something special not to be missed.
SailBadtheSinner Posted July 1, 2016 #2 Share Posted July 1, 2016 It is worth the hassle to fly north. I haven't visited the Caribbean since my first visit to Bermuda. You'll find Bermudians are helpful and genuinely friendly, the island is clean, the beaches are beautiful, there is much to see and do beside the beaches, and the island is not a tourist trap. I've never been approached by a panhandler, and have never seen a street vendor. I feel safe when out & about. You are made to feel as a welcome guest in their home, not someone who is just to be tolerated. Casino is open from 9PM to 5AM if the cruise line has purchase the necessary permit for the cruise ship. If you sail for the ship, the Breakaway and Anthem of the Seas are regular visitors. A Bermuda cruise is sailing for the destination, the ship is pretty much only there as your hotel. Bermuda is a beautiful island(s). It is not tropical. It is different than the Caribbean. The casinos on ships that sail there regularly will have the casino open after 9:00 pm. Anthem, Breakaway, Summit for sure. The shops will be closed while docked. The pools will be open but I have never used a pool while in Bermuda during the day. Bermuda has some of the best beaches in the world. I think Bermuda is special, better than almost any Caribbean port. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Edited July 1, 2016 by Charles4515
marco Posted July 1, 2016 #4 Share Posted July 1, 2016 We've cruised to Bermuda over 25 times over the past 35 or so yrs. If you take a 7-dayer, you're there for 3 or 4 days, depending on the line you take. There's plenty to see and do, you'll not be rushed as you can get on-off the ship 24/7. Public transport is easy and dependable. "Once upon a time" most ships were small enough to dock at St George's for 2 days and Hamilton for 2 days. Now, the only ship that docks in Hamilton is HAL's "Veendam" out of Boston, but it doesn't sail there all summer. (we just returned from that trip). That's my 1st choice, 2nd would be "X"'s "Summit" out of NJ, which does dock at "the Dockyard". We sailed on that last year. Bermuda is not a Caribbean island and I think is different and unique enough so that flying to the northeast to cruise to there is "yes....definitely worth it!" Shih-tzu Posted July 1, 2016 #5 Share Posted July 1, 2016 (edited) I prefer the Veendam as she docks right in downtown Hamilton. Just a block or two from the central bus station and ferries. You can buy a 2 or 3 day pass for unlimited use. By being more central it's a shorter trip to the various attractions. So far I prefer Bermuda over most places I've visited.....it is clean, no hassle to buy things. It's a bit more expensive but remember your sleeping accommodations and meals if you choose are already paid for. We arrived at Monday noon and didn't leave until Thursday noon as as an OP said, you can come and go as you please.
