Scandic Hotel questions:

Bergen

Any opinion on Ornen located next to train station?

Oslo:

Byporten - we discussed

How does Scandic Oslo City compare?

Copenhagen

Which Scandic you prefer?

Webers or Front or something else?

Bergen:

Scandic Ørnen is a typical conference and new build hotel. Rooms are typical "Scandic" clean, decent size and depending on floor and room, you have a view and more amenities.

All good for my needs on work or privat.

CPH:

Here it depends on my purpose, work or pleasure:)

For work, I often stay at Sydhavnen or Sluseholmen. Room are decent size and its close to were I'm at work. Its also a short walk for me to the city centre on foot or waterbus. And if I have a car, its free parking. Breakfast is good. And some of the rooms has a bathtub, I always ask for this. Nothing fancy, but it works like a clock for my needs.

Or I stay at Scandic Copenhagen, love to have the view over the water or city centre. I always ask for å room on top floors.

For private my favorite are Scandic Palace or Front. They have good breakfast and rooms are good for relaxing after a day out.

Oslo:

Scandic Oslo City is an old rica hotel. So its better from start. It has been renovated one turn. Rooms are not "100 Scandic style" compared to Byporten. Personally I think this is a better hotel then Byporten. Due to room setup and breakfast.

For stays in Oslo on Scandic my "yes" list is: Solli, Sjølyst, Grand Hotel, Holmenkollen Park and St. Olavs Plass

Its due to rooms, employees and breakfast.

We are arriving In Oslo on the RCCL Voyager  on Aug 29-30 (Monday and Tuesday). From what I understand we are docking at a berth that is a bit further away from the main part of town. That is OK, as we love to walk and wander about. Is there a place, at the dock, where we can get a map, or do we have to get to the visitors center to get one?

Since we really have no plans per se, we were thinking of just doing the HoHo bus, at least for one day. Does this get you to most of what one would want to see in Oslo?

We read somewhere that there is a free walking tour that is offered most days (tipping is advised. Do you know anything of this, and where would it be offered?

We were also thinking of doing this Oslo Fiord cruise. Does this make much sense if we are already arriving via cruise ship and departing the same way?

Thanks for all help.

Cheers

I think everything is pretty walkable in Oslo

from the port to the Royal Castle is only 2 km

Royal palace itself is on a hill.

Will need to take Tram 12 if wishing to visit the sculpture park. (On way back, get down at Soli and walk flat to palace orgetdown at National theater I'd you just want a look of the palace)

Main pedestrian street connects palace to the train station. Parliament, Frieda sign, Storvet, are all located at or near this drag

Munch Museum and Opera (walking its inclined roof is a great experience) are between station and the harbor

Tram 12 also connects station/opera toN9ber Peace center/City hall area

There isn’t really anything at Filipstad. When they use it for embarkation, RCCL just sets up a tent on the quayside. Maybe they’ll do something similar or offer a basic city map at the port talk? I’d recommend just pulling up something on a mobile or printing it before your trip. The route into town is fairly straightforward and follows a pedestrian and cycle path along the highway.

The HOHO bus visits most tourist sights, but it’s not particularly convenient if you’re planning to do a lot. The schedule runs much less often than most of the local transit, so you can end up waiting a while if you don’t plan things right.

A fjord cruise doesn’t really make sense since you’ll sail in and out through the same waters. It can be interesting and relaxing to catch a local ferry to on of the islands in the fjord and wander around, but if it’s your first visit to Oslo, there’s plenty to see in town instead.

The airport express train goes to Oslo S/Oslo central station. It’s the main station for train in Oslo.
But 50% of the trains continue onward to National Theateret and Skøyen station. So it’s not a problem to choose a hotel in that area. (Final destination is either Drammen or Stabekk)

Oslo-Bergen train starts at Oslo S, but it stops at National Theatret and Skøyen station, so you can start your journey here if you would like. Same on return from Bergen. You can get off at those stations.

What time of the year are you planning on coming?
There are multiple options for hotels. Price is depending on chain and location.

Your budget is also important.

On Oslo S you have 3 hotels in the building. Thon Hotel Opera, Scandic Byporten and Choice Østbanehallen.

If you walk 5-10.mins you have 20+.more hotels to choose from. So look at the map on hotelsdotcom to fit it to your budget is my best tip.

I stay a lot in Scandic for work. Not super fancy, but clean and ok value for money. Breakfast is good. They are located all over Scandinavia.
I use Scandic Skøyen a lot for work stay. Easy location to train to airport and good breakfast and relaxing room.

In Bergen I always stay at Scandic Bryggen or Scandic Hotel Norge.

if you have a wide budget for hotels, Hotel Continental, The Thief, Grand Hotel Oslo and Bristol is not wrong.

We will be three nights Oslo beginning July 1.  Planning on taking the train to Bergen and stay one night before boarding cruise the next day.  I have no idea if a hotel near cruiseport is feasible.

I believe we can take a train from Oslo airport to city enter so I’d like a hotel not far from train station. Certainly does not have to be anything fancy, would like breakfast included.  Thanks

Scroll up for some suggestions in hotels near station in Oslo.

There are three within the building itself  And many of various budget nearby

Bergen (town center)  is quite compact and plenty of hotel choices both near byparken or near harbor

We  will be in Oslo Sep 29 for one day and our ship will be docked at Filipstad pier.  Based on having read all of this we opted for a cheap excursion from the ship that takes us into town for three hours - but the ship will be there for 8 more hours after the excursion.  We want to stay in town for lunch and more exploring...How far is it to walk back to the pier from the city and is it safe to walk in the afternoon?

Hi.  I am wondering if you can advise about the Oslo airport and whether a 40 minute layover to change planes is enough time….flying from Tromso, Norway, going to Amsterdam with a 40 minute layover to change planes.  Is that enough time?  Or how much time would you recommend to change planes?

I have no idea what gates will be used by SAS or Norwegian Air.

Thanks so very much.

Definitely not if you have two separate tickets. If it’s a single ticket, you just need to be prepared for the possibility of missing your connection, but of course you’ll be rebooked.

It’s enough time if your inbound flight is on time, but if you are at one of the most distant domestic gates, you can’t dawdle at all. Since you’re not leaving the Schengen, you won’t have to worry about passport control, but you will need to switch to the international gates so you’ll need to walk at least a little. Worst case would be arriving at the auxiliary B gates on the domestic side, which can be a 10-15 minute walk to the terminal center. From there, the farthest Schengen gates are typically less then 10 minutes away.

For the most part, all of the gates are used by both Norwegian and SAS. If you are flying both, it’s definitely separate tickets and a terrible idea, since you’ll end up stranded if you have a delay and miss your connection. Personally, I would even want a little more time on a single ticket. An hour minimum and preferably 75-90 minutes just to have a cushion for delays (which are not uncommon at certain times of day and certain kinds of weather).

Thank you so very much for the info.  We’ll overnight instead in Oslo so we don’t have to rush around to make it on time for the second flight.  I see there are a couple of hotels with a walkway to the airport.

If you are on a guidet tour and your guide is super, feel free to give some tip but you dont have to tip according to price of the tour.

If you buy take-out coffee and pastery, no need to tip.

Debit/Creditcards

Most places in Norway take cards (99%) All norwegians cards have pin+chip.

You must have pin-code to your card. Prefer to have pin and chip.

NSB is now mostly known as Vy, and some regional routes are now operated by separate companies.

The one main “Ruter” app can be used for both tickets and trip planning.

The Viking ship museum is closed for long-term renovations. The Ibsen museum is also closed.

The National Gallery has reopened in its new location at Aker Brygge (including its edition of The Scream), and the Munch Museum has opened its new building on the waterfront (with a rotating display of its versions of The Scream).

Hiya Norway Lady, how nice of you to be so helpful! We arrive in Oslo on July 1 2023 and are staying a few days before heading back to Uas.  We want to do at least a day trip to some fjords, can you suggest don’t-miss options?

We are also hoping to find some tickets to the Springsteen concert on July 2.  I understand reselling for profit is illegal in Norway, but if you know of a legal source for tix I’d be extremely grateful and try to do something nice for you in return! We just don’t want to spend all day in lines out at the stadium.

I appreciate whatever guidance you send my way, thanks!

So sorry for not answering you.... I had answered, but hadn't posted🥴

Concert

Ticketmaster in Norway has a reselling ticket option. https://www.ticketmaster.no/feature/resale/?int_cmp_name=Ticketmaster-Resale&int_cmp_id=NO-Home-907&int_cmp_creative=Home-featured-3&language=en-us

If someone wants to sell their tickets, they can sell them official and guaranteed its real tickets.

Normally they have some more tickets for sale a few days in advance or the same day online in the morning. They always keep some tickets for companies etc.... When they decline, they put it for sale to the public.

Fjords of Norway

You will be in Oslo, so you have Oslofjorden. But it can't beat the fjords in western Norway...... It's really something special.

I recommend if you have time to do Norway-in-a-nutshell tour. Just google and you will find a good company that has this trip as a package.

You can take the train both ways or fly back to Oslo. Oslo-Bergen by air is only 50.min

Hope this helps you in your planning!

Hi, we will be in port for a day on June 7. We are amateur photographers so most interested in wandering outdoors.  I hadn't realized Oslo was such a modern city compared to the other ports we'll be visiting.

I see there are some pretty waterfalls along the Akerselva, an area with old brick buildings by the Beierbrua Bridge.  Do you have any recommendations for neighbourhoods with pretty/unique architecture and/or graffiti art?

Thanks!
Katherine

Hello @Kit1972

Oslo is a good mix of older and new parts in the city. I like to take pictures to😎

I will give you a link if you haven't seen it yet> https://www.lifeinnorway.net/oslo-photo-locations/

It gives you some ideas. There are lots of really good places among Akerselva. It's one of my favourite places for pictures. I live close to Ekeberg Park, so I walk a lot in that area. Many good spots for pictures.

Area around and in the Opera house has lots of good sight lines for pictures.

Attached is some trips that will walk you in some of the ares that are recommended for walking. They have a good map and list places recommended to visit.

Hope this helps you in the planing.

This is Morten Krogvold recommendations for Oslo. He is a very respected photographer. You can see in the pictures in the article. That Oslo has lots of nice lines to capture!
