Google Maps

I just found out something interesting in Google Maps.

In the search box you can type "Port Everglades Terminal 21, Fort Lauderdale, FL" or whichever terminal you wish and it will position you there. You can then use your home or other address and get directions all the way to the terminal.

Yep, have used that feature for several years. Note it allows for walking, biking and public transit. As we are in London right now, getting an idea of how long it takes to walk from point A to point B is great.

On the public transit side it gives great info on bus or subway lines, stops and how many, current time lines and delays and so much else. Particularly helpful if you have not been to that city before.

For me it is showing the trip as being an hour shorter than it used to, using pretty much the same route!

The estimated driving time is based on traffic and other conditions, such as construction, at the time that you search. Try the same search at rush hour and then again late in the evening to see the difference.

Depending on the version of Google Maps (mobile) you're using, the time calculation is estimated throughout your journey. So, if you are going to encounter rush hour somewhere along your route, that will be factored in. If you are leaving from say, Atlanta at rush and headed to Port Everglades, it will factor in the rush hour traffic along I-75 south of Atlanta, but not the rush hours for the other metro areas you'll pass through -- unless your estimated arrival time in those areas coincides with a new rush hour in a new location.

It's all calculated using Waze data & projections and updated pretty much continuously. This is a big change from 5 years ago, when the interstate travel times used to be off almost an hour for every 6 traveled.

Also, do NOT put in your stateroom number. If the ship is docked with the opposite side toward the pier, you might accidentally fall into the canal.

Using desktop google maps, not the mobile version. Comment about being an hour shorter was an observation based on checking maps various times over the past couple of years, and this morning which would be on a weekday including several places where rush hour might have to be considered.

My observation on the old versions of Google Maps was based on using it for actual in-car navigation over the years. Regardless of which version you use, the traffic/time estimates are driven by Waze data.

True. They are getting amazing in their accuracy and supply of info.
