WeRockChalkKU Posted September 16, 2016 #1 Share Posted September 16, 2016 Is there a bar that has tvs with sports on them? ESPN especially? Or can you get ESPN on the tv in your cabin? There's a college basketball game on during our cruise that I'd prefer not to miss - if at all possible. We'll be sailing in the Caribbean and on other ships I've been able to watch some games on ESPN before. I agreed to go on this cruise thinking I could tolerate missing some of my teams games. Now that roundball season is getting closer, I'm struggling with having to miss them. Then if the ship does gets the broadcast, I'll have to find a way to sneak away from Hubby so I can watch the game. Thanks for any thoughts on this.....other than I should just suck it up and miss the game.

The seating around it was barstools. I don't recall whether ESPN was a choice on the in-cabin TVs. I do remember thinking the channel selections were rather limited. Do not know why, but I am done with HAL if this does not change.

Have other cruisers noticed this recently on HAL ships? Thanks

I've read about a lot of different issues that have led to people deciding not to return to HAL, but I must say that this is the first time that I've encountered not being able to sit and watch sports on TV during the cruise being cited as justification for leaving. Ehhh... every camel has its straw. From things I've read, ESPN may not be long for TV viewing anyhow and becoming a streaming service instead based on mounting costs and competition. kangforpres Posted September 22, 2016 #7 Share Posted September 22, 2016 (edited) Every HAL cruise I've been on (10) had ESPN and ESPN2 both on the cabin TV's and showing in the Sports Bar at night on the ship. I was last on the Volendam in Alaska in May. If they have dropped ESPN I understand. It is the most expensive channel to carry for any cable or satellite provider, and yes as some have mentioned on this thread watching live TV is going out of fashion, but it really is the only way to watch a sporting event. -paul Edited September 22, 2016 by kangforpres

RuthC Posted September 22, 2016 #9 Share Posted September 22, 2016 This is from their website: CNN, ESPN, TNT, TCM and Cartoon Network via satellite (availability varies by itinerary) I have to wonder if the website needs updating, as only ESPN was available out of those listed when I took my last cruise. I was on the Nieuw Amsterdam, which had the newer, on demand, TV set-up. It also had ESPN2 and ESPN3, as well as some other news stations for live TV. FearTheFrog Posted September 22, 2016 #10 Share Posted September 22, 2016 We were on the Koningsdam during the olympics. The only sport stations they have are ESPN2 (not flagship ESPN) and ESPNU. I didn't go to the casino, but searched out every other TV on board and didn't find any additional sporting options. Don't even get me started about having to watch CrossFit Championships and replays of last year's college football games during the Olympics. Ugh. I don't remember seeing the cartoon network. There was a news station or 2. Overall not many stations but there was much more variety with their on demand type of programming. We didn't really need the TV for much but would have enjoyed watching the Olympics (or other live sporting event) while we were getting ready for bed each night. Showing the Olympics on the giant screen by the pool would have also been a nice move by HAL.
