rakes5 Posted September 17, 2016 #1 Share Posted September 17, 2016 Avalon is currently running a special with $2,000 off per couple and Free Flights for select 2017 Europe sailings. If you don't take the free flights, then you don't get the $2,000 off. You get 10% off + $300 flight credit instead. You do need to pay in full by November 8 to qualify for either offer. We are planning on doing a river cruise first and we have already booked a Royal Caribbean TransAtlantic to come back to the US, so we only need flights there. The fine print says that once ticketed, air reservations are subject to change/cancellation penalties of between $300 per ticket and 100% of ticket value. Has anyone ever booked a round trip ticket and just not showed up for the return flight? Also, the free air will be based on the lowest available price in the air system. Has anyone used a similar offer, but then upgraded the flight to a non-stop or business class? Is that something they allow?
KathyK13 Posted September 17, 2016 #2 Share Posted September 17, 2016 I would call Avalon and explain your situation, or check with your travel agent. I would think you could just not use your return ticket.
Rare gnome12 Posted September 17, 2016 #3 Share Posted September 17, 2016 I think it works if you skip the return, but not the other way. If you don't show up for an outbound ticket they cancel the whole itinerary

Rare terry&mike Posted September 17, 2016 #5 Share Posted September 17, 2016 Yes, we have done this about 3 years ago. Took the round trip ticket because it was too good to pass up the deal, but had different plans for the return. Flew over on the free ticket, but just left the return ticket unused. Agree if you do it in reverse (don't show up for the flight over) it will not work, as your entire reservation will be cancelled.
Rare terry&mike Posted September 17, 2016 #6 Share Posted September 17, 2016 I do want to add one note on this. The evening before departure we were given a paper with our transportation information to go to the airport for the following morning. I did stop by the front desk and let them know that we had made "private arrangements for the transfer" so that they would not be holding the bus waiting for us the next morning. garycarla Posted September 17, 2016 #7 Share Posted September 17, 2016 (edited) This is called "throw away ticketing". Not "allowed",but folks do it all the time. You just do not show up for the last flight(s). Once you miss one leg, they cancel the rest. As to transfers to the airport - PLEASE let someone know you have made other plans so they do not look for you. As to the airline... oh well. But, as others have said, call and see what other deals they may have. After all, they do have to pay for those airline seats. Once you miss one leg, they cancel the rest. Exactly right. It happens a lot more than people imagine, some of the online ticketing agents routinely do it when people book a one-way ticket. I proper one-way is very often more expensive than a return so the agents just book a return and don't tell the customer about it...
