I play slots in the casino quite a bit, so by day three (at least) I've achieved my Drinks On Us perk. This is one reason I don't opt in for Cheers, because as long as I'm in the casino playing I get free drinks. And honestly I spend more time there than, say, at the pool. Also, I found that the casino bar makes fabulous bloody marys, so I'd go in the morning, stick a few bucks in the slot, order a bloody mary, cash out, and carry the drink with me to breakfast. :p

I always tip the server $1 for a drink when I'm playing slots, but I guess I shouldn't because if I'm paying for it, the gratuity is included, right? But once I get the Drinks On Us perk, there's no more gratuity... so I should continue to tip for free drinks. I don't remember if I got hit for any kind of "service charge" or extra gratuity for the DOU drinks.

You're right in that. I'd definitely tip per drink after getting DOU. that way they come back (otherwise they can be less attentive once they know your drinks are comped). I spend a fair amount of time gambling and have gotten DOU every cruise but just made the connection that that particular perk may be nullified by already having Cheers.

I wish they had an alternate perk for those that don't drink. I've gotten drinks a few times at land and sea casino vacations and they are useless to me. Give me something I will use like free chocolate for the rest of my trip lol

I always assumed that the free drinks while gambling were an attempt on the casino's part to make your thinking fuzzy, so that you make poor betting decisions. Would chocolate have the same effect? Haha

Since you get one point for every $2.50 you put through the machine and on a 7 day cruise you need 1500 points to get a DOU (yes, $3700)......I guess you could say our thinking is already fuzzy.

I always tell people gamble because you enjoy the game not to chase the perks.

Wow! $3700! We're used to Vegas where you basically have to just sit down at a table to get complimentary drinks. If you've spent $3700 to get drinks, they're certainly not free. Lol

That's played, not necessarily spent. So if you win a little here and there and keep playing instead of cashing out, points can add up. I had my DOU card after two or three nights and still only lost about $1,000 total on the slots on a 7-day cruise. In a land-based casino, that would have been only about one night of playing.

While I didn't have any great hits (other than one on the very first night out for about $400) I had enough small hits to keep playing, and that's what racks up points, plus time spent playing.

Casino odds:

Vegas....good

Indian casino....bad

Cruise ship....ugly

Very true.

I wonder if ship casinos are required to post their payback percentage like land casinos? Somehow I doubt it... which makes them all the more suspicious. I'm going to look and/or ask on my next cruise. Should be interesting.

Even with a few 'wins'.....those drinks average out to be some of the most expensive you can get. A friend a few cruises ago gloated when he reached free drink level. All I could think is 'dude you are $1500 in the hole', that is expensive and the farthest thing from free there is.

I must spend way too much time in the casino...last several cruises were free (- taxes and port fees) and the past two the drinks on us was waiting for me from the moment I arrived. We don't do excursions so I spend my $$ in the casino and the DW spends it in the spa. No need for cheers and yes we tip cash for all drinks.

Cheers, good luck and happy cruising!

  • 8 months later...

I was on Ecstasy this past week, and I hit the DOU the 2nd night in the casino. Total cash out of my pocket, $40. Played craps 3 of our 5 nights, maybe 2-3 hours a night, and walked away with $330. ($290 more than I began with) It doesn't matter how much you spend, its how you play and how much you play.

This is not true at all, maybe the slots are a little more stingy, but blackjack and craps are customer skilled games, exactly the same odds as Vegas

"If you win the drinks are FREE........If not they are not"

Along with this statement, it's a dollars X hours that equal rewards. Someone asked about blackjack. You would need to play a minimum of 4 hours a day betting $25 chips to get any kind of decent reward.
