What didn't you like about the specialty restaurants? DH and I are cruising in Feb and usually love to try them.

We sailed on the Getaway an went to Cagney's, teppanyki, La Cucina, and Moderno. La cucina was just ok. But the others were awesome!

Will be on the Epic on October 30th, looking forward to it. I voted early am ready, but most of all will love being away from this election craziness :-).

Now back to the point, I have seen lots of videos of the Epic on youtube and I think i will love every minute of it..:D

  • 2 weeks later...
I will be going on the EPIC in early February of next year (first ever cruise). Does anyone have some recent dailies from a 7 day Caribbean cruise they have taken on EPIC that they could forward to me?

You might need to wait a little longer...Epic has been sailing in the Med and the first Caribbean cruise is coming up November 12th. :)

My wife and I just booked the Epic for 2018 and I know that some people are not very fond of the ships design. We sailed on the Getaway last year and loved it. The food and service were great. We loved the Vibe area and also enjoyed the waterfront for a pre/post dinner drink.

I was wondering for those of you that have sailed the Epic and one of the Away class ships, how do they compare? What did you like about each?

TIA

The Epic is hands down my husband and i's favorite ship. We had the best time on the Epic. It is like Vegas at sea. Superb night time entertainment and activities. The Haven area is also our favorite. Much larger than the Away ships Haven. I wish the Epic sailed a different itinerary so we could sail her again. We are just not interested in sailing out of Port Canaveral.

I have been on both the Epic and Getaway and the Epic is a much better ship IMHO. The Getaway does have the wonderful waterfront and a better aqua park with better water slides too. Its important to remember that the ships are similar but the Epic wins hands down on so many other features:

Epic spa is still the largest at sea and far superior and larger than Getaway. Epic also has aft views with open area.

Epic Spice H20 has a REAL pool and stadium seating. Just seems bigger and better.

Epic gym blows Getaway's out of the water. The gym on Getaway almost seems like an after thought.

Haven area - Epic blows Getaway out of the water. The Haven restaurant on Getaway is so tiny. Epic Haven lounge has water views. No water views from the lounge on Getaway.

Specialty restaurants: La Cucina has its own space and not open area like on Getaway. La Cucina on Epic is a very big and posh space with amazing water views. Shanghais is also bigger and better. It has its own space on Epic. On Getaway its a small open area to the smokey casino which is also loud..

Nightclubs. The nightclub on Getaway is a joke. Its a small room. Epic has Bliss night club that is HUGE and has cool funky areas to chill.

I probably missed a few more but you get the point. I was on Getaway after Epic and was a bit disappointed in the chopped up and cramped areas compared to Epic.

I agree with everything David said!

If you hate it so much and consider it a prison, why have you repeatedly sailed on her? Just curious as I wouldn't book another cruise on a ship I hated.

I was thinking the same thing, no matter the price or itinerary I would not book a ship I hated, certainly not 3 times. We are going to be on her this time next week and are looking forward to a new type of cruising experience.

The Manhattan Room and the area around the martini bar, right by a grand stairway with a huge multi-story chandelier, were gorgeous spaces, but I found some public areas to be too crowded; the overall layout was poor, with only 2 elevator bays forward and aft for all those people (smaller ships typically also have one mid-ship) requiring very long walks to get places; and cramped, poorly laid out cabins.

We sailed on Epic last week and the bowling alley is next to O'Sheehans. Still there

Yes the bowling alley on Epic is a real sized bowling alley. On Getaway they have the small duck pins. No biggie unless you are a bowler.

However just another tiny detail that makes me favor the Epic.

Everyone has their likes and dislikes as well as what is more important to them.

Me...I like open decks and being able to lean on the rail and look into the ocean feel the breeze on my face and watch the flying fish and sometimes dolphins or even a whale (on Transatlantics). Good luck doing that on the Epic.

The Gem and the Pearl (which you have sailed on) are at the top of my list of favorite ships of the 40+ I've sailed on. Besides their open decks, their Garden Café is the best designed buffet in the entire cruise industry. I spent 30+ years in the restaurant industry and promise you those two ships are probably the only ships in the cruise industry that their buffet was actually designed by restaurant professionals and not the architect. It has a natural flow of traffic, space and it's not massive cluster**** of people going everywhich direction, kitchen staff carrying hot food crossing through the crowd as well as bussers carrying dirty dishes through the crowd like you find on the Epic.

And then from the Garden Café you can go right out to the Great Outdoors. What a wonderful part of the ship to sit as you are sailing out of a port in the evening. On the Epic they call a few tables next to the pool area The Great Outdoors. What a joke.

And then there are the bathrooms...Or in the case of the Epic, the nonexistent bathroom. There's just something about standing in the middle of the cabin trying to shave from a tiny sink as water splashes everywhere including onto the desk/vanity. I guess it's a man thing women don't quite comprehend.

LOVED the Great Outdoors on the Pearl. One reason why we booked a balcony on the Star when we did our Bermuda cruise..no Great Outdoors :(

The Epic also sails the Western Mediterranean. We are doing this June 2017.

I hope the Epic comes back to Miami someday ;)

I would love for the Epic and Escape be the permanent Miami ships.
