NH Cruisers Posted October 26, 2016 #1 Share Posted October 26, 2016 (edited) Am I in the minority here? I have always loved the upper level viewing lounges. NCL ships are doing away with them in favor of suites. Wish NCL would find it in their hearts to bring them back. On Princess the Skywalker lounge on the back of the Star Princess was a favorite hang out spot of mine on our Alaska cruise. I see even the RCCL ships are doing away with 'em. Carnival Cruise line doesn't seem to care for them. Our Holland America cruise to Panama had a upper deck viewing lounge as did the Celebrity Solstice. So I guess some cruise lines still offer them. But I do miss not having them on my favorite cruise line, NCL. Edited October 26, 2016 by NH Cruisers
Jrlang1 Posted October 26, 2016 #2 Share Posted October 26, 2016 (edited) I have to agree. I spend a lot of time in spinakers on gem and great outdoors for breakfast Edited October 26, 2016 by Jrlang1
Rare www3traveler Posted October 26, 2016 #3 Share Posted October 26, 2016 The Jewel class ships and The Sun still have upper deck lounges.
hladygirl Posted October 26, 2016 #4 Share Posted October 26, 2016 I have to agree. I spend a lot of time in spinakers on gem I miss the observation lounges too. I also miss the outdoor upper outdoor eating areas.
NH Cruisers Posted October 26, 2016 Author #5 Share Posted October 26, 2016 I have to agree. I spend a lot of time in spinakers on gem and great outdoors for breakfast I love the Spinaker lounge on the Gem. But it is a prime spot for another Suite. I am afraid that will happen. Funny... When I sailed on the RCL Mariner of the Seas I loved hanging out in the Viking lounge high above everything. I thought to my self, wow... This would make a great location for a big stateroom! Yeah it would, and then I can never hope to afford it and enjoy the space! Thats what the cruise lines are doing now, suiteing them out. Suite-ing? is that even a word? WashyWashyHappyHappy95 Posted October 26, 2016 #6 Share Posted October 26, 2016 Getting rid of the Great Outdoors was such a loss. Absolutely my favorite spot on the Gem. That's the difference between the Gem and BA. Gem feels like a cruise ship. BA feels likes some sort of floating commerce barge.
cb at sea Posted October 27, 2016 #7 Share Posted October 27, 2016 Nowadays, if you want a "view", you'll have to pay BIG BUCKS for it!
Rare Turtles06 Posted October 27, 2016 #8 Share Posted October 27, 2016 I totally agree; I hate what cruise lines are doing with new builds in creating a disconnect from the water. RCI's Anthem of the Seas, for example, has NO place where you can stand on an outside deck in the center of the ship and look towards the bow. That's absurd. I hate what NCL did to the Star and I have no interest in sailing on her because of it.
fdpevey Posted October 27, 2016 #9 Share Posted October 27, 2016 (edited) Interestingly, these "ship to lounges" were also a favorite places of ours but I always remember them as being mostly empty (on many different cruise lines). We like quiet and calm - and the nice views. These lounges also were/are typically separated from most other places where people would be going - like the dining rooms, or theaters, or casino, etc. Perhaps too many passengers just found different places they liked better. shark with a laser Posted October 27, 2016 #10 Share Posted October 27, 2016 I've always loved the observation lounges for a pre-dinner drink or a nice place to read on sea days. I think Epic is the only NCL ship I've been on without one, and I will miss it on my upcoming Dawn sailing.
