claudiniusmaximus Posted November 29, 2016 #1 Share Posted November 29, 2016 Hi Folks We are booked on the summit for the June 27th sailing 2017 spending American Independence Day in Boston overnight, and Canadian Independence Day in Nova Scotia overnight also. On the list of celebrity excursions there is nothing related to Independence Day at all - just the usual excursions for those ports. I was just wondering if anyone has done this itinerary in the past and if so, did Celebrity put anything special on? Either on board or ashore? Many thanks (Ps also posted in the celebrity forum) Sent from my iPhone using Forums

maryann ns Posted December 1, 2016 #4 Share Posted December 1, 2016 In Halifax, tourist facilities will be open, but expect to find the waterfront crowded. You could just join the crowds and have a great day on the waterfront, or you could prebook a private tour and get to Peggy's Cove and/or Lunenburg. They will also likely be crowded. We found a fundraiser for a sailing club for kids that was situated right on the river near the Boston Pops bandshell area. We sat on deck chairs and enjoyed the fireworks after a day walking the Liberty Trail downtown. Sent from my iPad using Forums

maryann ns Posted December 14, 2016 #7 Share Posted December 14, 2016 There will likely be fireworks in Halifax and you would see them easily from the ship I would think. Check out www.novascotia.com later in the spring to see what may be going on.

VidaNaPraia Posted January 20, 2017 #12 Share Posted January 20, 2017 (edited) The "sailing club" is Community Boating. https://www.community-boating.org/ And for the non-Philistines, it's the Freedom Trail, not the Liberty Trail. 138east Posted March 9, 2017 #17 Share Posted March 9, 2017 Nothing planned. Celebrity is passing up a great opportunity here. It would be a win win for everyone. Nothing planned. Celebrity is passing up a great opportunity here. It would be a win win for everyone. The opportunity might be there, but it would be a logistical impossibility. There is no way a group of cruisers could be transported close enough to the Boston Pops area let alone have reserved seats for them. The Esplanade is a mini version of Times Square on New Years Eve with many folks camped out all day. If you're there overnight, it is possible to go on your own to view the fireworks, but be prepared to walk a bit and deal with the crowds. Last year we had hotel rooms at the Westin in the Seaport Area. DD and DH took the two older DGD's at the last minute to see the fireworks. They Ubered as close as possible to the Esplanade, saw the fireworks, and walked all the way back to the hotel because the traffic and crowds were nuts. Traveling Library Posted March 10, 2017 #19 Share Posted March 10, 2017 Visiting the Esplanade does not sound like a good idea. Would you have any suggestions on what else to do in Boston on 7/4? (During the day). Boston is a walkable city. From the Black Falcon terminal take the Silver Line (a bus) from the port to South Station. You can then change to the Red Line to Park Street where you can pick up the Freedom Trail. Or you can get off at South Station and walk along the Rose Kennedy Greenway to the Aquarium and the North End (Italian district). If you take the Red Line to Park Street you can walk to the Public Garden to ride the Swan Boats https://swanboats.com/ and stroll over to Cheers (photo op only). If you go to Cheers you will run into the crowds for the Esplanade but that shouldn't be too annoying. The Red Sox are out of town but you can take a tour of Fenway Park if you are a baseball fan (at Park Street change to the Green Line toward Kenmore) get off at Kenmore and follow the signs to Fenway. Closer to the port (go to South Station the walk from the port isn't that interesting) is the Institute of Contemporary Art. On the Fort Point Channel (across from South Station) is the Children's Museum and the Tea Party Museum. Within easy walking distance of the port is the Harpoon Brewery. Don't know if they are open on the 4th but you can check their website.

Also, regarding the "Italian district", are there stores/deli's/resturants worth visiting? Is the Aquarium worth a visit?
Traveling Library Posted March 10, 2017 #21 Share Posted March 10, 2017 The Rose Kennedy Greenway is where the elevated highway (Central Artery) used to run thru the city. The road was put underground during the Big Dig in the 1990's. It will lead you from South Station, past the Aquarium (haven't been there in years but it was nice when I went), to the North End. The Freedom Trail also goes to the North End. Make sure you follow it to the Old North Church, Paul Revere House, and Copp's Burial Ground. I don't have a restaurant recommendation but a local spot is Pizzeria Regina at 11 1/2 Thatcher Street. For dessert either go to Mike's Pastry or Modern Pastry. YUM! Book recommendation: "Dark Tide: the Great Molasses Flood of 1919" by Steve Puleo. This took place in the North End.
