Smoke free casino experiment

They did a 3 week experiment on the Majesty by restricting smoking in the casino. It didn't go well. Revenue dropped significantly. It was like a ghost town. They reverted back to the way it was, it was packed every night, and the revenue increased. Imagine that.

Something doesn't make sense here. Celebrity does not allow smoking in their casinos which are packed. Certainly every night and on sea days. They are owned by RCCL so the comparison should be easy for the suits to make. If X was losing money by not allowing smoking they would probably allow it.

Another thing, only 15% of Americans smoke. Let's say that of those half cruise on a regular basis. Are we to believe that 7% of the cruising population contribute enough to incremental profit to risk pissing off the other 93%?

And I would say keep your thoughts on my health to yourself. I am older and in perfect health. I am not interested in your useless thoughts on my PERSONAL habits. Just as i would not comment on yours !!!

Except it is well known that smoking damages every single cell in your body, so it's not really an opinion that it's more than just unhealthy. I watched both my grandfather's die from smoking related cancers.

First sorry for your loss

That has nothing to do with my health. I have lost people to cancer that had nothing to do with smoking and again my perfect health is not your concern. I don't judge or bash non smokers so don't input your opinion on my personal health. I could care less if they banned it everywhere but outdoors. I am a courtesy smoker and I don't judge anyone or their habits or health especially when I have no clue who they are.

I think you have a fatal assumption. You are saying that only Americans cruise? however.

In November 2015, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention noted in their report, “The percentage of U.S. adults who smoke cigarettes declined from 20.9 percent in 2005 to 16.8 percent in 2014. Cigarette smoking was significantly lower in 2014 (16.8 percent) than in 2013 (17.8 percent).”

The other incorrect assumption is that you cannot just cut a percentage in half. For all anyone knows, smokers could cruise at 2 or 3 times the rate of the general population. Or not.

On my Cruise Comments / Survey last week (which was using a 1 to 10 scale by the way, not 1 to 5), I included the following line:

"The casino will continue to see no action from me until there is a non smoking casino. A non smoking "section" is the same as a non peeing section in a pool."

Running a casino as non smoking for a week as an experiment without advanced notice is a flawed experiment. People that would have played my not have brought their bankroll. Others that may have had the cash to play basically avoid the casino completely and would not have known the smog and stank were gone that week.

I want smokers to have a place to smoke. And to smoke and gamble. But we need a solution that keeps the smoke away from the majority of people that don't want it. Separate "sections" don't work.

Yes, a much higher percentage (than the general population) of gamblers are also smokers. But its gotta be less than 50% and dropping, right?

Just as many countries have instituted no smoking public spaces, so eventually will cruise ship casinos. I remember when airplanes had smoking sections. I always got air sick when I was young until the smoking was outlawed on board the planes. I hated traveling because of the smoking in hotels and restaurants. Now it is such a pleasure. It was stunning to me the first time I stepped into which used to be a forbidden place for me in the past (an English pub) and I enjoyed myself because of the smoke free air. I hate casinos--even in Las Vegas. Maybe someday I will like casinos both in Vegas and on cruise ships, but for now I avoid them like the plague! I say totally smoke free cruise ships sooner rather than later!

You are arguing against facts, but whatever, it is your life as long as you aren't blowing smoke in my face, it's not my issue, but sorry if what you consider bashing is really people caring about what others are doing to themselves. I also highly doubt you are in perfect health if you smoke and if you are now, it will not last.

I think you accusing people of "bashing" you is a defense mechanism because you know that smoking isn't healthy. But, that is my opinion and you don't have to agree with it, but you are also doing what you are accusing others of. I really hope you don't find out the hard way that smoking is never good for anyone and you may be healthy now.

I do find it interesting that so many are concerned with how little money they think the crew makes, but you rarely see anyone concerned with the health of the crew who work in or near the casino and other smoking areas who have to breathe in the smoke everyday.

Now I would go to the casino "more" if it were non smoking.

I agree but I do think it should be advertised as such. Maybe more people would book Royal if the casino was non-smoking to replace the smokers who get upset and not sail Royal because of it. I love the slots but they don't get as much of my money as they could because of the smoking. And it's bad enough just smelling it but if a smoker comes and sits down near me I get up and leave. Even the so called non-smoking section reeks of it because they don't have the correct ventilation system.

Same here- I lost 2 family members to smoking related deaths. Both of them went around really smug about how they've smoked all their lives and it's never hurt them...until it did. Both died within a month of finding out they had cancer. I have no interest in being exposed to that poison just because other people don't care about their lungs and are willing to take the risk. Put them in a sealed room with other people who don't mind black lungs and walking around smelling like an ash tray.

I gamble a lot at the casinos in Colorado because they're non-smoking, but I refuse to go to the casinos on the ship. Last time I tried I got a sore throat and a stuffy nose the minute I sat down, I played one hand and got up and left.

And, that is a major issue on ships. Casinos on land have extremely good ventilation systems (especially the newer ones) to the point you won't even notice if someone is smoking and it doesn't hang in the air. Last time I was in Vegas about 10 years ago the only casino I went in that you could smell smoke was one of the oldest on the strip. All the new hotel casinos have air handling systems that take care of the smoke.

Come and cruise from Australia, no smoking anywhere inside any ship....

.. and in Australian clubs (which tend to have slots) I've seen covered and screened outdoor sections which have slot machines. So the smokers play outside in a sheltered area.

Maybe this is what the next generation of ships need!

Maybe you should re-read my posts. No where so I say smoking is healthy. Eating fast food , drinking , smoking pot( which is legal in many states) too much gambling, drinking soda. Etc etc. is not healthy but we all have our vices. My point is I don't comment on someone's health based on something they do that is not considered healthy and I don't agree with and no one should on mine. People should worry more about them selves and not be so judgmental because none of us are perfect. And I never have and would never blow smoke in anyone's face. Smoker or not. I also agree with another poster on here. They should make a smoking and non smoking area in the casinos and by that, i mean a true separation. Maybe glass either the smokers or non smokers in a area that has the gambling machines. Then everyone who wants to ,can play and be happy.

This was not meant as a personal attack on you or your personal health. It was meant to be a general observation or fact regarding smokers health. It is a fact, smokers are more likely to have higher medical costs than NON smokers.

You can't dispute this. You may not but in general, smokers are a burden to healthcare.

I only have had to go to the doctor for my yearly check ups. Will that change when I am say 80 or 90. Maybe. Who knows.

I don't dispute that ALL unhealthy vices cost us tax payers money. There are many overweight people, people who eat fast food, alcohol drinkers and their livers, drug addicts, energy drinks. The list goes on. Very few people live a completely healthy life style and so most all of us contribute to the cost of healthcare in one way or another. Sometimes it's just genetic but mostly it's our vices /our choices. I don't condone or disagree or preach to anyone for their choices they make in their lives. We live in a very judgmental society and we as a society need to look in the mirror more and not so much at others and their choices.

The casino was small. I am a smoker and I saved a lot of money [emoji106]. I can also say that many of us who were smokers did not play as much and to be honest the casino was dead most of the time.]

It takes time to work. Smoker's are a self righteous group, Ban it as an experement and they will make sure its a failure. Ban it forever and they will get all indignant for a while and then start coming back. When Ohio went smoke free years ago there was all kinds of dire warnings about loss of businesses and jobs. There are as many bars as ever and they are crowded, but its now nice to go see a band play and not come home smelling like the southbound end of a northbound cow.

If I am fat, or eat good foods, drink a coke that is bad for me, it doesn't affect you.

Smoking has a byproduct that is harmful to others called second hand smoke. Not to mention most fat people don't stink as much as my clothes after being in a smoke filled Casino.

As you say, don't you think you should respect 80% of the other people who do not smoke. You are provided with and outdoor area to smoke in.

OP was not being rude, just being honest.

Maybe that is the problem! Some posters don't know what rude is! To make personal remarks about another poster that have nothing to do with the thread is rude. This thread is about smoking in the casino not about an individual' health.

Thanks for clearing up that puzzle! I wondered why so many on here are unnecessarily rude! It's just ignorance not maliciousness!

Lol! Smokers (notice the correct plural spelling not the incorrect singular possessive you used) are self righteous! Nonsmokers are the ones who turn every thread into a smoking thread. Some people cannot stand others who don't do as they want rather it be smoking, or dressing, or riding elevators or any other behavior. There is a word for that, too!

Just for your information, a lot of local bars in Ohio did close when the smoking ban came in. Others could afford to add patios or other solutions. I know 2 that still allow smoking inside as they always did. It obviously depends what part of Ohio you are from. I know the only realty you recognize is your own.

If less than 20% of the guest smoke.

If more than 80% of the guest do not smoke.

The casino becomes smoke free.....

Than 20% of the guest will spend less time in the casino

80% will spend more time in the casino

It would seem the math says more people will spend time in the casino with it being smoke free.

Also, the perception is that the casino is crowded at certain times, and that is because, it has become a smoking lounge inside. That does not mean they are gambling. Most of the time, I just see them hanging around to get a quick puff before dinner.
