We are going to LFK in Roatan and Tropicante in Costa Mayo. Is it better to pay with small bills or are large bills ok??

I always bring all denominations to pay with exact change. That way you don't get stuck with $30 in foreign denominations. For Tropicante you can email and ask. He responds quickly.

In all foreign ports (non US) I try to have smaller bills so I can pay as close to the price as possible without having to get much change.

Most all these ports will take US Dollars. No need to worry about foreign currency. I wouldn't be dropping $100 bills all over the place for a couple reasons, not to say you can't use them.

Any non US port will struggle to make US change. They don't refill the till from the bank without paying a fee to get US currency so they rely on cash transactions through the day to make change. So if you are asking if you can drop a $50 or $100 for a small item, it's very likely they will be unable/unwilling to make change. Now, if I'm paying for an excursion that is a few hundred dollars. I will bring large bills to pay for that.

Agree. Easier and faster to finalize payments.

While Guest Relations (Pursers Desk) may not have foreign currency they can break large bills down to something more workable.

Guest Relations may be able to cash Travels Checks but that too is becoming very passé.

The casino may also be able to help BUT remember while the ship is in port the casino will not be open.

Basically all financial transactions on board are handled thru your Key Card so plan ahead to have sufficient funds petty cash on your person.

 

While in foreign countries BEWARE about receiving large sums of currency in change may be tainted as drug money or possibly counterfeit - know your money !

I used to bring a few hundred in singles and 5's on each cruise, but now I take $100's and use the bill breaker. Just keep feeding it the bills until you get it down to the denomination you want. You'll get $20 first, then feed in a $20 to get 5's, and a 5 to get singles.

Tropicante definitely took USD and I would think you'd be fine with 50 dollar bills there. They made change for us in USD. In fact on a cruise ship day they probably take in more US money than pesos. Their massages on the beach were well worth it, FYI.
