Being carded on the ship

My daughter, 29 at the time, and her cousin, 22 at the time, were frequently asked for their driver's licenses to gain entrance to adult venues in the evening.

The S&S card was not enough.

My husband and I were also asked to provide our driver's licenses to cash traveler's checks at Guest Services.

We stood our ground on that one. We demanded to speak to the supervisor who cashed the checks for us.

We also at that time, complained about the driver license checks for our daughter and niece.

No explanation was given for the requirement of additional ID proof of identity and age.

I will help out on the explanation. A DL is an official ID card with a picture on it. Many places on the ship, such as the casino do not have people with scanners walking around. Also in the clubs that are adult only, they do not have scanners at the doorway. Now the bartender does, but that's inside, not at the door. The daughters looking like they might be young, are asked for their ID. Now, it's kind of funny how people complain when a company will do their job at enforcing the rules. I'm really don't care if it's a guy or girl, or if you have pockets or not. If you can carry you ship's card, than you can also carry your DL. This is not a big deal. It's normal. As far as checking ID's for cashing checks. I can't think of a single place in the world that does not check ID's for check cashers. Plus, I didn't even know you can still use travelers checks.

I do agree with everything you say except that I will not carry my DL around the ship as I have zero reason to. Not going to punch a hole in it, or risk having it misplaced or lost. While I myself have not lost my S&S cards, it has happened to people in my party. They were laying out on Lido when suddenly a huge gust of wind hit the ship and everyone's towels and other belongings on the whole deck of the Celebrity Solstice were airborne. Their S&S cards went over the side.

No need to put your DL at risk of anything happening to it and I would consider it foolish to carry it around when totally unnecessary. If I need to show anything else besides my S&S card, I will walk back to my cabin to get it and put it back as soon as I'm done. Sorry, but State IDs are a PITA to replace.

Ok geez, it always amuses me when a simple question can get such snide answers. Lol! I have been on 10 cruises and never once carried anything other than my s&s around the ship and never would as it's a running joke that I lose my card within the first hour on the ship. Happens almost everytime, not sure how. I really should wear it around my neck but I hate that! Anyway my 18 year old is a boy and rarely wears anything but jeans so I guess it won't be a big deal for him to carry his wallet just like he always does. Thanks!

Why all the panic over an ID in the first place. If the 18year old is trying to drink, he'll get carded and whether its his S&S or a DL he'll be declined. If it's the casino and all he has is an S&S, they'll send him to his cabin to get the DL.

It's the 21st Century folks...IDs are the norm.

And all the froth over not punching an S&S card because potential loss of data. Data isn't stored over the entire card. And at boarding they'll punch it for you in a proper place.

I must have missed the part about not punching a hole in the S&S card. Which post was that in?

And for all of you making snide comments about traveler's checks, my comments didn't concern the means of obtaining cash.

It was based upon an expectation of a level of service on board ship.

However, as we figured out, service will depend on the service provider's knowledge of its clientele. And obviously, Carnival knew its clientele well enough to require a back up for its S&S card for age and ID.

So, from those are you who might what to learn from someone's else's experiences, the take away is that yes, additional ID may be required at times on board a Carnival ship.

For the rest of you, I hope someday you can experience the customer service on other cruise lines (and no, I don't mean RCCL or NCL).

Been on Princess and Celebrity too - generally speaking Carnival's Fun & Friendly service has been a strong offset to less than stellar entertainment and ship decor.

Maybe you're talking about an even more exclusive/expensive lines? Do the have LP records and VHS tape libraries?

All I can say is that at my age, if someone carded me it would make my day!:p

And all rhetoric aside, to the original poster, please remember that even though he's 18, your son will still not be able to drink, regardless of the drinking age where you live. On the ships, it's 21 across the board! He'll be fine in the casino, but not the bars! (I know that wasn't your original question, but I thought I'd share, just in case!)

They also card at the comedy club for the adult shows...my son was trying to go an got stopped. He's 18 and it was ironic because he went many times at 17 and wasn't. He couldn't get to his ID (it was 1130 pm and it was in our safe in our room) so he basically just insisted he was 18 and a freshman in college. Best guess is he wore the guy down...I'm not sure whether to be proud of his debate abilities or dismayed that he chose to do so with an employee doing his job...
