Is Disney that much more luxurious than NCL?

Recommended Posts

We cruised NCL (Dream) last spring break for their Star Wars themed cruise. It was fantastic but I wouldn't pay the premium again. Biggest plus were the rooms (we had a regular ocean view) were much larger than NCL's insides which is nice but as a family we are literally only in the room to get dressed, shower and go to bed. We never hang out there ourselves.

Waterslides and pools a big advantage over Pearl/GEM etc (we've not been on BA etc so can't compare with NCLs latest) there.

Food was ok - Not as good as Princess and HAL in our opinion but slightly better than NCL in the main dining room - Buffet not quite as good though lots of shrimp all the time which was nice. Very marginal differences in food really but a slight nod to Disney on it.

Kids enjoyed soda's being included as we don't normally give them soda!

Our kids actually preferred NCL/Princess/HAL kids clubs. We found the Disney ones to be very busy and unorganized in that the kids could run/play in a huge area but then they missed the activities when they were going on as the staff didn't pull the kids into them - you had to be in the right place at the right time. As a result we found our kids really just played video games in there. The Detective game played around the ship was great fun though and they loved that.

Overall Disney was great but I would not pay the premium for it again unless there was some big themed thing I really wanted to try out....

This was our experience on Disney, too. The kids' club certainly LOOKS cooler on DCL, but the club itself was chaotic and overwhelming for my kids - too many kids and not enough structure. My kids vastly prefer the more personalized experience they had on NCL.

We are glad we did the Disney cruise because we had a great time, but I just don't see the value for the prices they are charging. Some things about it are cool and unique, but nothing that we can't live without. We are more than happy to put DCL in the "been there, done that" category - I don't see us ever cruising them again.

We did one Disney Cruise on Disney Wonder when they were first offering them. It was a great cruise. Loved the entertainment, the balcony room was bigger than NCL but the same in quality. We were not thrilled back then with the food situation. Not sure how things are now, but back then it was a rotation in 3 MDR's. and Just one speciality restaurant that "good luck" getting a ressie. We never did. The buffet was average. Not all that pricey back then either...we did the 3 day park hotel with 4 day cruise. I liked that option but even though we had a great cruise, I don't think I'd do Disney again. I think NCL is better for the money. Loved our last 2 NCL cruises on Dawn and the Gem. We are booked on Breakaway this time.

Holy bleep Disney's prices are higher than NCL.

What do you get for that price, besides a prettier boat and Mickey? I've heard the food is largely equivalent.

NCL is not on the same planet as DCL. That is IF you have kids of a certain age!

We are platinum on both Disney and Norwegian.

We were part of those dissatisfied when Disney abruptly changed their alcohol policy after our final payment was already due. They severely restricted their carry on policy where they were previously quite generous (which was one of the ways we rationalized the higher price).

When I wrote an e-mail in displeasure regarding that topic, I actually got a call in response from a CRM in Karl Holz's office who told me, "We like to think that people pay more for the Disney charm."

That's what you're getting for more money: Disney charm. Guess many put a hefty price tag on that. We are no longer among them.

DCL has a top notch kids program !

The decor on DCL is more classic. The staff is wonderful with the kids, soda included ( not that big of a deal ) .

More theaters. They also do a dining rotation which is nice.

DCL's food is NOT better than NCL. Food on DCL could be better. . DCL's private island is our paradise compared to NCLs

I agree their prices are threw the roof as of late. There is a certain feeling you get aboard Disney .... not sure if the price tag out ways that.

I couldn't agree more. We have sailed 20+ times on DCL and really enjoy it, but the increasing costs and new alcohol policy have us cruising more on NCL. Our children are now drinking age and when I asked my family if they would rather do 7 day Disney Fantasy this year or 7 day NCL Escape, everyone immediately choose NCL. Good thing for me, we sail in 3 cabins (6 adults) and I saved over $6000 and we have UBP!

DCL is a better product, but its getting harder (almost impossible) to justify the price for the same ports and shows.

DCL Advantages

Castaway Cay - We LOVE Castaway Cay and was really hoping that Harvest Caye would be similar but friends and family tell me otherwise.

Service - We enjoy seeing the same cast members and always received something extra and maid to feel special

Adult Only Areas - We have sailed 4 times without children and we loved it! DCL does enforce the adult only pool area, clubs, and the adult beach (Serenity Bay) on Castaway Cay

Complimentary Room Service

On Board Booking Incentives - 10% off next cruise and up to $200 on board credit

Entertainment - IMO, shows are better on DCL and great choices for movies

Food - regular dining rooms are much better on DCL. Palo and Remy are outstanding premium options.

NCL Advantages

Price

UBP - No beverage packages available on DCL and sudden change to old alcohol policy pissed off a lot of folks.

Casino

Late Night Entertainment - More options available on NCL, DCL ships are pretty much dead after midnight.

These views are simply my opinion and your mileage may vary. Either cruise line is a great vacation and it always beats a week at the office

We are booked on our first Disney cruise over Thanksgiving of this year. The Epic sails on the same exact day on the same exact itinerary (except for the private island, Great Stirrup Cay vs Castaway Cay). NCL prices for similar accommodations (a standard balcony) are less than half, but with kids aged 5 and 8 at the time of sailing, we are going to bite the bullet and give Disney a shot.

We've read all the superlatives and listened to all the rave reviews from friends who have done Disney cruises. I'm hoping that Disney doesn't live up to the expectations because at these prices, I'd rather consider this Disney sailing a one time cruise rather than our new cruising normal.

Then we disagree :) Just curious though, what specific element that I mentioned do you think that NCL is better at? I get that you have a better time on NCL, but what specifically? (I am not planning to argue with you, just curious)

No offense taken, people do have different opinions. :)

For one, personally I didn't find food on DCL any better than on other cruiselines we're cruised with - MDRs, room service and pool deck venues were ok (not superior) but on the contrary, we found the buffet to be the worst we've seen. It is still very good, but others have been better in terms on variety (we don't eat shrimp :D).

Also the service was equally good to what we have experienced on other lines - I didn't experience anybody going above and beyond in the way that we wouldn't have seen elsewhere too.

Stage shows are definitely better on Disney, but for us those are just curiosity - max 1-2 times per cruise.

Movie theatre was a nice concept but when we went (early morning on a port day), first they had technical difficulties and when the movie finally started 20mins later, there was constant banging from somewhere (apparently there is a workshop located right behind the wall or something) and that completely ruined the experience. I'm sure that they would have interrupted the work had we complained, but if one has scheduled program in a venue right next door, work like that is hardly "magical". ;)

So while it was a very nice cruise and had some aspects that were better than on our previous cruises (many have been already listed by others; Castaway Cay, room service, adult pool area, Animator's palate as a venue, etc), the overall experience wasn't worth the extra price IMO - for me it was just a good cruise with Disney-everything glued on top. And good cruises I can get for a lot less (we paid little over $2k total for five nights in smallest inside without the split bathroom).

:eek::eek::eek:

No thank you!

I'm no Disney fan, but I've been interested in going on one of their ships. It looks like that will never happen.

I can't justify spending 2k for 5 nights on an inside when NCL is usually 1500 for a 7-day balcony or even mini-suite sometimes. With the perks.

Absolutely true. For what it's worth, we booked very last minute and had very specific timeframe and possible departure ports. Besides two DCL ships our only options were Sky (NCL is not an option for us in foreseeable future) or old Carnival or Royal ships, so trying Disney was the best choice of those available, and TBH we had wanted to try DCL for quite some time.

While the price was very high (prices on that cruise had been quite stable since it was published, no big hikes or drops at any point), five nights was still cheaper than seven nights. :D

My boys felt the same way about DCL kids club. They were very excited to try it, but wouldn't go back saying the crew were there for crowd control. On NCL (all ships except breakaway), they've had less electronics, but staff interact with the kids. I've had kids club staff on NCL tell me things about my boys that they would only know if they had a conversation with them. That impresses me more than fancy electronics.

The pools were a zoo of unsupervised kids and my youngest was almost jumped on multiple times in the Mickey pool. I had to tell him he couldn't go back because it was a sea of children. Yes it was a high-demand week, but the ship definitely didn't have enough pool space for the kids. Plus the entitled attitude of most other passengers drove me crazy. Many didn't realize we all paid a premium to be on DCL...

I do agree their balcony staterooms are a nice size, but when I'm paying the same as what I pay for a Haven cabin on NCL, I'll take the Haven.

We aren't big Disney fans, so the shows and character meet and greets weren't all that appealing to us. The shows were excellent, but my boys don't know enough about Disney to follow them. The restaurants are neat, food was no better than what we've had in the Haven restaurant. Scheduled dining times meant rushed evenings to get to dinner on time instead of playing in port.

The one thing I loved about DCL was Castaway Cay. That place is phenomenal, probably one of the best days be had as a family.

Ironically I was having this very conversation yesterday with a colleague, who is booked on DCL. I told her my boys prefer our H6 on Breakaway :)

My 21 year old still wants to do a Disney cruise. We always do balcony cabins (really enjoy that) and when I've priced Disney, I've always said I don't think so. It doesn't fit in my normal vacation budget while an NCL or Carnival balcony does. The Disney cruises for us price wise would go into the category of quite rare special trips that we only do every 10 years or so that are beyond our normal vacation budget. Our next big beyond normal vacation budget planned is Germany.// I think we'll just do mini theme park visits for our Disney fix.

I hear their ships are beautiful and they are good at keeping kids out of adult areas, but I see them on cruise critic rated a 5 vs. maybe a 4.5 of the ships we usually travel on (that's a lot of money for a 1/2 star difference). Since we never use kid's clubs and aren't into character meet and greets, the premium for Disney "magic" seems very high. I feel the same way about staying onsite at their resorts and always stay offsite. I feel the same way about their extra tours and experiences also (very pricey). I do, though, very much like the theme parks and even though they are high priced, feel those are a good value (nice splurge).

I have to say NCL buffet is 100% times better. My kids love the movie theatre on DCL but it annoyed me I paid so much for a cruise for them to watch movies in a theatre or sit in the cabin to watch movies.

I did notice we had more "family" time on NCL vs DCL. Some people don't like being w their kids on a cruise but I did enjoy seeing them on the actual ship.

Disney's Castaway is the best. I have yet to experience either one of NCL islands.

I would like to experience another Disney cruise. Maybe when the new ships come out the older ships prices will go down.

My husband and I took our 8 year old granddaughter on the Disney Fantasy in 2014. We had a fantastic time and I would highly recommending doing a Disney cruise once. The highlights included fantastic entertainment: a screening of "Frozen" (again it was 2014 and the movie was new...and she was 8); off the chart live shows; an interactive scavenger hunt; the water slide; and of course swimming. The activities for families and children were wonderful and exactly what you would expect from Disney. We had two main complaints that are personal, and others may find our negatives to be enjoyable, but for us, when we decided to cruise again, we looked for other options.

First, dining. The food was very comparable to NCL, it was good, no complaints, but it wasn't anything that would make you say that "it was the best meal I've ever had." Our problem was the assigned dinner times and tables. On Disney you either eat at 5:00 or 7:00, I believe. Based on when we booked, we were given the later seating. Frankly, how does Disney know when we'll be hungry? We found our assigned time too late for an 8 year old. After dinner we were tired and found ourselves falling a sleep in the shows that were attended at 9:00 pm. That's just too late for children. The other issue was that they assigned us to sit with another family, all of whom did not speak English. Not only was this uncomfortable for all of us, but it just didn't make sense. After many calls, it took Disney 3 days to give us another seating assignment. We love that NCL lets you eat when and where you want. You don't have to share your family dinner time with others. Now, again, others may find this as a positive. For us, it wasn't how we wanted to spend our family vacation time.

Second, still...dining. Dressing for dinner every evening really got to be a bit much. Again, some people may find that part of the thrill of a cruise, but for us, we wanted a more relaxed vacation. That doesn't mean that we dress like bums on NCL, it just means that we're comfortable in cruise casual - no dress shoes for my husband makes him a happy camper. We're from Michigan, and anytime that we can wear flip flops or sandals in March - it's a good thing!

I truly think that you'll be happy with either cruise line, it just depends on which overall experience you're most interested in. I'm not saying that we won't be cruising Disney again, just saying that for now, when it's just my husband and I cruising, NCL is the very best choice for us. We'll be enjoying our third cruise on the Getaway next month and have already booked NCL again for a 2018 cruise.

This is absolutely fantastic to read! I am a bit nervous about NCL. We are booked on the Escape in June, from what I'm reading it looks like there is actually more for us to do TOGETHER, than on the Fantasy.

As far as pricing, there's a a lot of times during the year where DCL isn't too bad. I'm willing to spend up to $4500 for the Caribbean (we're a party of 2) in Fall/Winter, but I'm not willing to pay over $6k for the spring or summer. I'm definitely not willing to pay over $13k for their Iceland itinerary.

The pricing compared to other cruises lines is ridiculous, but the pricing compared to a WDW vacation.. DCL comes out ahead, for us anyway. It's easier to justify WDW prices than DCL prices though.lol

We went into our NCL cruise w a positive attitude. It was a change from Disney. We went w a group of 5 families of previous DCl cruisers. I think you make your vacation what you want. They both have their good and their bad. Our group was split on who liked it and who didn't. We have booked 2 more NCL.

Many die hard Disney cruisers will never talk bad about the ships and I had to get off the fan pages. All ships have bad and room for improvement.

Both lines are clean, the staff is friendly, I just think NCL is not afraid to cross the line into pg13 territory where Disney stays in the PG line.

If you see adult Only on NCl they mean it. When Disney has adult trivia people still bring kids.

My biggest complaint w NCl is the smoking in the casino.

I've done 15 DCL cruises and two NCL cruises. Our first NCL was the Epic and while we had fun I found myself constantly comparing to DCL and being disappointed. That said we then booked again on the Escape since DCL was too expensive for the same cruise. On that cruise we docked next to a Disney ship and I kept wishing I could switch. We end up going to specialty dining every night because we dislike the main dining on NCL. We feel that we are totally ignored if we don't purchase alcohol too. I love Howl at the Moon and the comedy but each night the comedy was the same and seating was a nightmare if you didn't have reservations. I don't like having to make reservations for everything. Getting off the ship was also a nightmare on our NCL cruises. I also LOVE Castaway Cay and ending my trip there is special to me.

Overall I just prefer the service on DCL and the atmosphere. We are not big drinkers or big gamblers (hate the smoke in the casino) so those don't matter much to us. I will continue to cruise both lines though, our next trip is NCL and we just got off the Disney Wonder last week. We did just book the Wonder for Alaska in 2018 because with the on board booking discount it was only $200 more than the Bliss.

Everything is subjective. There is no "right" answer, both are great products, just depends on your taste.

So if you need anything they know just what to do to make it happen. Whether it's dinner, activities...likes, dislikes...hubby loved that.

I cant compare the food to NCL's since it's been years since I've cruised with NCL. But dinning in DCL was always a great experience. The food was amazing and the desserts as well. My husband and son often had two appetizers and entrees without asking. The ship is gorgeous, but that is not why we sail DCL. It's the attention to detail in everything each cast member (staff) did. If we didn't finish the wine during dinner, we had the option to take it to the stateroom or have it with dinner the following night...I wonder if NCL does that? I'll have to find out.

We often teared as we got off, we became friends with the cast members (staff) and often like family...because we would see the same again and again.

The first time I cruised with DCL was 14 years ago and I was alone with my 5yr old son. I was the only single parent on the ship but I was never alone. Every time I turned around there was someone there helping me or keeping me company while my son was in the kids club. Also, I just would not trust any other company with my son.

Going back after our son had grown, hubby and I participated in a lot of the adults only activities and hardly ever ran in to small children. Participated in excellent mixology classes, Tequila tastings, whiskey tastings...and they were all fun! The adults only pool was great. The adults only restaurants (dinner at Palo $25 and dinner at Remy $50) was well worth it. We never had anything less than top shelf or premium liquor...I'm not sure if they even carry anything less than. (Do other ships carry well or rail brands?)

Also, the other guests...people were just so nice...throughout the years we made friends with so many other families from other states and in Europe. I've read so many complaints about other guests in NCL it's sad...and that's not a reflection on NCL. But we did pay more for the entire experience.

We are prepared for a completely new experience in our upcoming NCL cruise...keeping an open mind and open to a new and different experience...without comparing the two...

I hope this helps...

Don't get me wrong, it was a fantastic experience, but it's so expensive. And we took advantage of a promotion. I did find the food to be better than NCL's. The service was better as well. The ship was nicer. But I'm not saying that NCL's food is bad, or the service is bad or the ship is low-quality. Just that across the board, Disney really was better IMHO. I think the price is really about the Disney thing ... the characters, the shows, the details that Disney does in their parks and hotels.

Yup, we sailed the second cruise after they abruptly changed the policy. We had a huge group of people on that sailing. Not only were folks upset about the change, they were even more angry at Disney's response, which made things worse.

So our large group accepted Disney's challenge. You name the method, we used it to smuggle alcohol onboard. We smuggled so much on, we "smuggled" it back off. We all saw it as a giant middle finger to the mouse. You tick off people you've already price gauged, that's what happens.

We at least thought with their new policy, they'd offer a drink package to ease the change. Nope.

On NCL, it doesn't even occur to us to smuggle a drop. Wouldn't dream of it. Long live UBP!!

Sorry to say, but none of the things you mentioned except for the split bathrooms in some cabins (not all) are Disney-specific, but can be found on other (also mass market) cruise lines as well.

And yes, Disney does carry all the same well liquors as all other cruise lines - you can choose to pay for premium liquors on all other lines just as well.
