Arctic circle

Does anyone know if the cruises that go into Akureyri in Northern Iceland cross the Arctic Circle to get to this port?

Do not know for sure, but on my cruise from Southampton to New York last September we went north of Iceland, but there was no mention of our having crossed the Arctic Circle. I would expect ships to make note of it if it was crossed. There appears to be enough space between the NW and NE corners of Iceland and the Arctic Circle for the ships to pass just south of it.

When we did a similar westbound TA on the Crown a few years ago, we did cross the Arctic Circle and everyone received a certificate from Princess stating that we had indeed crossed it.

Enjoy your trip! If you go in September, you may actually see the Northern Lights - we did, off our starboard balcony near Greenland :-)

By any chance were you on the September 2009 TA, otherwise known as the cruise to nowhere? Missed ports due to weather, but had a fabulous time and the Northern Lights were an amazing bonus.

Sea Princess a few years ago stopped there. They didn't have enough buses for the ship so all the tour buses drove overnight up there and then back to Reykjavik for our next stop. We did get Arctic Circle certificates and did have a plunge in the pool while north of that.

According to our photo mosaic coffee mug (we make one with our best photos after each cruise), we did the trip in 2011. We missed a port in Greenland due to high winds, then the Canada portion got messed up because of Hurricane Irene (I think). I guess it happens a lot!

Anyway, OP, sounds like you have a good shot at crossing the circle & maybe seeing the Northern Lights - Happy Sailing!

We were on that cruise:

Missed Lerwick due to a storm that ship avoided by hundreds of miles

Missed Akureyri due to winds too high to safely dock (or tender)

Missed Nanortalik due to an iceberg sitting in the spot the ship had to anchor (but had as a substitute a beautiful sail up a fiord)

Missed St. John's due to an avoided storm (but had a beautiful day in Halifax as a substitute port)
