The flat pods are easier & more foolproof - you can use 3 or 4 of them together in the bigger 4-cup maker, but not vice versa.

We are on a balcony and would like to bring our own coffee for brewing in the cabin. Anyone know what size filters the coffee maker accept, or are they only for the pre-sized packets?

NCL uses [mostly] two types of coffee makers. A 4-cup trip coffee maker and a single serve coffee maker. Which ship are you on?

Your room steward will keep you fully stocked with coffee (regular or decaf).

You should bring either filters for 4 cup makers, or those single serve refillable pods...depending on the coffee maker you get. The 4 cup makers use the packets of grounds that are sealed in a filter...so they do not have "loose" filters to give you.

we are on the Gem leaving a week from now. Would the room steward supply filters? We like our own specially ground coffee.
According to this current GEM post, balconies & mini-suites are using a 1-cup coffee/hot water maker. RS will provide as much flat filter pod w. regular & decaf coffee daily, 2 tiny 6 oz. cups along w. rest. Use 2 pods (it will fit) for a stronger 8 oz. cup if you bring your own mug.

See post #10 - http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2409149

The Hamilton Beach 1-cup is sold on Amazon, along with pre-mixed Senseo style pods & DIY filter kits, as noted above - please dispose of those carefully without leaving a mess for your RS.

Even when staying in Oceanview or Inside, it's fine to ask RS (when s/he has time as it's always crazy on ship turnaround days for them) to bring one to you, time permitting. Usually done by evening's turndown service (filling ice bucket, empty mini ice box, etc.)
