We were really enamored by the Architecture,Cobblestone Roads and all the colourful Houses we saw during our walk. It looked like the facades on many of the Houses and the Cobblestone were getting re-done on a street by street basis.

Our next Goal was to have a Rest. As we came down the Hill from the Castillo San Cristobal there was a Business on the right-hand corner across from the Square (Business is on left-hand side if looking up the Hill) and there’s a Bar at the front of the Space and a Take-Out Food Station inside at the very back where we saw a lot of Locals going. This Place was the complete opposite of a Mullet Haircut cause the Party was in the Front and the Business was in the Back.

 

In talking to the fellow who runs the Party End we found out that ‘the Empanadas he was selling in that Warmer right there were from the Business End in the Back’ and were “very good”. One of the things I wanted to have in San Juan was an Empanada so we shared a Chicken Empanada and each had a couple Bottles of Water…and since it wasn’t a Coffee House we were both able to quickly use the Bathroom.

 

The Empanada was everything I had envisioned it would be even though it didn’t look like much wrapped in the Napkin.

 

 

We spent about ¾ of an hour here watching the comings and goings of both the Locals and us Tourists and with 2 Ships in Port + all the‘local traffic’ of Residents of San Juan getting take-out from the Restaurant in the Back there was a lot of comings and goings.

 

Next up was the Barrachina Restaurant where the Pina Colada was invented and we wanted to try 1…or 3 + have some authentic Island food. We walked along the Calle de la Fortaleza for several blocks before we arrived at our destination.The research we had done told us to get there at 11:00am or shortly thereafter as the Restaurant really fills up and we arrived shortly after 11:00am.

 

 

Barrachina was much bigger on the inside than it looked from the outside with 3 distinct eating areas and we requested and were accommodated with a Table for 2 indoors.

We each ordered a Pina Colada...

 

 

... and they were very good and our Waiter convinced us to try the ‘Special Sampler for 2’ featuring Corn and Grouper Fritters, Beef Turnovers (Empanadas) Calamari and stuffed fried Plantains.

 

There was a couple a few Tables over who were on the Oceana Marina who we heard say to their Waiter that they were visiting San Juan for the 1st time. The Husband ordered a Local Beer, the Wife a Water and then he ordered a Club Sandwich while she ordered Chicken with Rice Soup. I looked over at Dee and said “I can’t believe they came to Puerto Rico and ordered food from Home."

 

Our Sampler plate arrived and we both tried the Calamari – it was good. Next up were the Turnovers (Empanadas) and neither of us grooved on the Meat inside and it was all downhill from there. We just couldn’t stomach any of the remainder of the food on the Plate. It just wasn't to our liking. The Plantains that we had in the Dominican Republic were cut thin and fried and were almost like Potato Chips. These Plantains were thick and dense and stuffed with Fish or Chicken or Beef and left me wishing for Chicken with Rice Soup.

 

We were more than a little embarrassed and apologized to our Waiter for “not eating much” before adding “we really wanted to just try a little of everything” and he said he’d 'leave the Plate there in case we wanted to pick a little more.' After he left I looked across at Dee and said “I’d rather eat that guy’s breath from last Night”……and we laughed and we laughed and we laughed.

 

Our research was right because at 3 Pina Coladas after 12:00pm the place was packed with lots of people waiting for Tables. And we must say all the other food that arrived on other Tables looked really, really good especially that Club House 2 Tables over. We settled up with our Waiter, headed outside and then continued down Calle de la Fortaleza towards La Fortaleza.

 

We try and buy a souvenir of some sort that is Living Room or Rec Room worthy on each 'new' trip we go on. Some of our purchases have been very good ones while others have been alcohol-fueled poor decisions which end up in a Bin in the Shed with the Slingshot and Maracas from Cozumel, the Coconut with the Face from Jamaica, etc. Conclusion # 799 – Nothing worse than waking up after a Day in St. Lucia and hearing “The eyes on this wooden Carving we bought were drawn on using Green Marker”.

 

We checked out a few stores before we found one that had exactly what we were looking for with Artwork and Items made by local Artisans ONLY. Conclusion # 800 – No ‘Made in Taiwan’ here. The Owner of the Store was very personable and made us want to do business with him.

 

We found a number of Works that were done by Savatore Cantanzaro who was born in Italy in 1945. and his story went like this: “just after WW II his Family immigrated to the United States and settled in the Bronx, NY. When he was 17 he met the beauty of God at a Church Service one Sunday at Holy Trinity in the Bronx. In his continuing search for God he decided to explore the world at the age of 19. His first stop was Puerto Rico which is rich in history. He fell in love with the Island and stayed here ever since. He was mesmerized by the natural beauty and warmth of the people of the Island. This feeling allowed him to grow the idea of exploring the art of daily life as a Priest saying “I enjoyed the freedom to explore and to see where art took me” He currently lives in Catano, PR. All his works are made of natural materials including any paints, glue or colourings he uses and the fact that he is a Priest meant all of his works have been ‘blessed’ – something we knew wanted with anything we bought in Puerto Rico.

 

We found a Cross we really liked and the Owner of the Store mentioned that Salvatore would be in later that Day and playing a hunch with regards to items being ‘blessed’ and Artists being present I figured that probably meant the prices had been raised so I asked the Owner exactly that. He looked almost shocked and said “Yes the prices have been doubled” and asked ‘How did I know?’ I just pointed at my Temple and said “Kidneys” .......and we laughed and we laughed and we laughed

 

We agreed on a Price just below 50% off of the Ticketed Price which the 3 of us seemed happy with and we were and are extremely HAPPY with our Purchase. Conclusion # 801 – ‘No’ to the Bin.

 

 

So Happy we went skipping further down the Callede la Fortaleza a few blocks before turning left and headed towards Parque de las Palomas Conclusion # 802 –Note to Self: Don’t order the Palomas Soup.

 

 

Dee is as fond of Birds as she is of getting up early so I was very surprised that she came into the Park with me but one of the things I LOVE about her is the fact that she loves an adventure.

A cruise with you two is on my bucket list as well, hubs and I are S&S'ers but didn't get to go when you were with the group. And I know some of the folks on the Swine Flu aka "Mexico is Closed" cruise also. Someday... Fun fact, we went on a tour after our first cruise out of San Juan, those blue paving stones were actually ballast on the sailing ships of old. They would come over mostly empty, leave the weight of the stones behind, then sail back loaded down with sugar cane and barrels of rum. Yo ho ho!

Continuing to enjoy your review. Loved the segment on the Kon Tiki. We've been on it several times going back to the late 80's. As I remember it, the excursion was always sold as the Kon Tiki Party Raft, so I don't know what the Disney people were thinking! :D

Jim, one more thing about the Kon Tiki that I remembered from the last time we were on her back in 2004. The rum punch, which was VERY potent, was in a barrel with a spout on the bottom. Next to the barrel, they had a bottle of Bacardi 151 which you could free pour into your rum punch to give it a little extra kick. Do they still do that? Don't know how I remembered that. I lost a LOT of brain cells on that barge!! :D

LOL...I didn't notice a Bottle of 151 and I have a pretty good eye for Liquor :D ...The Bartender 'free-poured' the Rum behind the Bar - choice of Dark or White(?)...we only got Dark - and then the Barrel with the Spout on it you mention had Fruit Punch in it - that might have been be the Family factor.....so we got Rum and Ice from the Bartender and then added a little Fruit Punch as needed

We continued along a Street just inside the Muralla de la Cuidad (City Wall) towards the Cruise Ship Terminals stopping ata few different spots to take some Pictures ...

 

 

 

 

 

...and were back on the Ship around 2:30 pm; just in time to have our daily feeding at the Tandoor Station because well….we were starving.

 

Back at the Cabin we found this sassy little Animal perched on the Pillows....

 

... and our Platinum Gifts –must say we LOVE the Tervis Tumblers; think we are up to 11 Carnival Tervis Tumblers now.We were lucky in October as we each got a Tervis Tumbler on the Carnival Inspirationbefore being mortified to see both a Red and a Blue Croc Visor on our Bed as our Platinum Gift on the Carnival Miracle. Conclusion# 801 – ‘YES’ tothe Bin.

I hydrated on the Balcony while Dee laid down but not before making me ‘promise to wake her up when we stated moving.’ We didn’t start pulling out until shortly before 4:00pm and my attempts to stir Dee were met with a signal that she wanted a Coke so I told her ‘I was taking the Camera and heading over to the Smoking Section mid-ship on our Deck to get the Views from the other side of the Ship.’

 

Not too long after I got out there Dee came walking up saying she knew she’d ‘regret if she didn’t see the City.’ The Ship reversed out of its Berth

 

 

 

.. before swinging around and moving forward out towards the Caribbean Sea so Dee was able to get a goodlook at all of San Juan...

 

 

..... plus see El Morro on the way out.

Now out in Open Water we made our way down to the Our House Sports Bar to get reacquainted with Nemanja. After we grabbed our Bar Stools we had a look around and saw a lot of familiar faces ready for Sports Trivia where we would be competing for the much sought after Carnival Splendor ‘Ship On A Stick’.

 

We had our Canadian Host from the 1st Night back so Dee and I called ourselves ‘Team Eh’. Sometime during the Contest the Host asked a Question and said that “Everyone HAS TO get this Answer right”. Nemanja shouted out “What do they get if they get it wrong?” and before my Brain had a chance to stop my Pina Colada and Crown influenced Mouth I blurted out “Sh*t On A Stick”…and we laughed and we laughed and we laughed.

 

A Hockey Question pertaining to the Montreal Canadiens – my favourite Team – ended up being the difference-maker as we were the only Team to get that Answer right which was good enough for a 1 Point margin of Victory for 'Team Eh'. We already have a ‘Ship On a Stick’ from every Carnival Ship we have been on – Conclusion # 804 – ebay – so I walked over to a Family who had been at Sports Trivia every Night and asked them “if they had one and if not could I give this one to them?” The 3 young Boys were super excited to get their very own SOAS and ‘Thanked’ us over and over again. Every time we saw their Parents the rest of the Cruise they said “that was sure a nice thing you did for our Boys” which made us feel good. Conclusion # 805 – We were just Happy the Boys didn’t get that ONE question ‘Wrong’

 

It was 6:30pm by the time we had shaved several number off of today’s 15 and this was the 2nd Elegant Night – which was something that Dee was fortunate to notice in the Sailing Itinerary printed in the Fun Times on Embarkation Day – which meant the front of my Shirt and I had a Date with an Iron on Deck 9.

 

So with that in mind we said “See ya Later” to Nemanja and went over and said 'Hi' to all the Tarbenders at the Oceanview Bar. We only stayed for a Smoke and 1 Drink.

 

Back at the Cabin I grabbed my Shirt, went down to Deck 9 and found the Laundry Room empty and the Iron ‘Hot’ and still out on the Ironing Board. Even with putting the Iron safely back in its Holder by the Timer after I was done 'fronting 'my Shirt I was back up to the Cabin in no time at all.

 

As we were getting ready we had a chat about the fact that we had already consumed a fair bit of Alcohol during the previous 8 Days especially at the Oceanview Bar in the Casino on this Cruise. We both felt a change was in order so we went to the Splendor Bar in the Atrium for a pre-Dinner Drink. One of the female Tarbenders there made Dee a Rose out of a Napkin and a Straw.

 

Once we were finished our Drink we made a quick stop by the Oceanview Bar for a Smoke and our Patron Shot neat and then it was off to Dinner in the Gold Pearl Dining Room.

 

We said 'Hi' to Made, Wayan and Made and then we each sat down behind a tall Glass of Wine. Dee ordered a Kale Salad and for her Entrée she went with her favourite: the Short Rib and Filet Mignon Plate. I had the Shrimp Cocktail and the Salmon. Everything was GREAT. Dee passed on Dessert while I continued my quest to find some WCMC gooey goodness but unfortunately my Dream just crumbled away in front of my eyes

 

We went across to say “Hi”to Natalja and to confirm our Plans for the next Morning. We gave her directions on how to get to Jack's Shack and told her we'd 'be going there as soon as we could get off the Ship.'

 

Back to the Casino we went for some Blackjack and once at a Table we were quickly joined by Rick and Leslee, a Man from Georgia, who had a GREAT Sense of Humour and who we had played with quite a bit already on the Cruise, and a Lady from Compton CA whose Husband sat behind her but didn’t play. We had played with this Lady a few times on the Cruise already and had a lot of Laughs and she was convinced that she ‘had played with the 2 of us on another Cruise’.

 

The Lady from Compton was playing 2 Hands at $25/ hand and the Dealer gave her a little grief asking ‘Why are you at a $10 Table that pays 6 to 5 onBlackjack when you could be at a $25 Dollar Table and getting 3 to 2 on Blackjack” She responded that “I don’t get Blackjack all that often and I’d rather play at a FUN Table” We LIKE the Lady from Compton.

 

We had gotten to know the Pit Bosses quite well by this time and while at the Table we heard a call for ‘additional Security’ to report to the Dance Club which is on the same Deck as the Casino. Dee made a comment “At least they are not coming for you this time” and we both knew what she was talking about but no one else at the Table including the Pit Boss, who happened to be standing and watching our Table, did not and he said something to the effect of “You are always too Happy to be in Trouble”so I asked him if ‘he had time for a Story”. As most people who know me know Id o like to tell stories and he was game to hear one so I told him the following:

 

When we were on our Carnival Miracle Cruise in February of 2012 our friends Tammi and Allison ended up having a bit of an issue about 3:00am in their Cabin early one morning and told us the story the next day as we walked down the Hallway to our Cabins after being on Catalina Island in the Dominican Republic.

 

Allison and Tammi were in their Beds and Allison's Bed was the one closest to the Hallway Cabin Door. Allison woke up about 3:00am to the sight of a strange man in their Cabin and screamed at the guy telling him to “GET OUT” and “THIS IS NOT YOUR CABIN”and she said ‘the guy seemed a little frazzled before he turned around and staggered out.’

 

Tammi was the last one of 2 of them to the Cabin that Night and was ‘sure the door closed securely behind her’ and Allison said she was ‘sure she heard the sound of the man putting his S&S Card in the Card Reader and then the Door opening and him walking in and just standing there before she SCREAMED at him.’ We asked them ‘What Guest Services and Security?’ had said and they told us they ‘had not reported it.’ We insisted they do so and they agreed they’d go down right away. To make sure there wasn’t something wrong with the Card Reader on their Door Lock Dee grabbed one of our Lanyards and slid the S&S Card in the slot and tried the Door. Her attempt was unsuccessful and we were happy about that….and there is a ‘Now you know the rest of the Story’ to this one.

 

Later on that Night we were at the Blackjack Table and even though we had played a LOT already on this Cruise and done VERY WELL we were on a real Roll this Night – we could not lose. About an hour into our streak a man wearing a Suit came up to the Velvet Rope on my right that separated the Table Area from the ‘Pit’, extended his hand and said “James? It is James right?” and I said “Yes” and shook his hand. He introduced himself as the “Casino Manager” and asked me if I ‘would come with him for a minute.’ I looked down at the pile of Chips in front of me and looked at Dee and then asked him if ‘Dee could save my spot? She’s my wife.’ “Of course” he said before adding “But please come with me.” Having not met him when I picked up my Cash Comp the 1st Night I really thought what was about to happen to me was a good thing. My imagination got the better of me as thoughts ran through my head of what kind of AWESOME Benefit or Comp I was about to get as he walked me around our Table, around the next one, past the Roulette Table, the Craps Table towards what I thought would be a stop at the Casino’s Cashier’s Cage…but was I EVER WRONG.

 

He escorted me past the Cage over to one of the Exits to the Casino where 2 guys in White Uniforms were waiting and then said “James these 2 gentlemen would like to speak to you" The 2 guys introduced themselves as “Carnival Security Staff” and said ‘they were conducting an investigation’ and that ‘they had some questions for me.’ Now my mind reallystarted to race. My first thought was that “did they think I was cheating?” and then they asked me if ‘my Cabin Number was 6269?’ I answered “Yes” and then asked them “Why?” thinking “Oh Crap there’s a problem with the Cabin…we have been robbed.” That notion was quickly quelled when one of them said “we are investigating into why you were somewhere you did not have permission to be.”

 

Before I said anything one of them asked “Do you know Miss Sonya-Lynn and Miss Allison?” It took me a minute before I put 2 and 2 together and remembered that Sonya-Lynn was Tammi’s real first name with Tammi being her Middle (3rd) Name. I said “Oh Tammi, I know her as Tammi and Allison …Yes they are our friends.” “Why did you try and go into their Cabin without permission? Was it a mistake?” “I never tried to go into their Cabin…they are our friends”

 

“We have records that show you usedyour Sail and Sign Card in their Cabin Door and tried to get into their Cabin.”And he held up a document of some sort. “Sometimes friends you know… things happen…you know” as he put his hands and fingers together in a ‘funny’ way that simulated an ‘act’ that a couple would engage in. He had let his last comment trail off and I quickly responded that “You are ABSOLUTELY off base with that Comment” and then he asked me ‘Where I was last night?’ I told the both of them that “I was in bed at about 8:30pm... (I didn't feel well)... and never left my Cabin afterwards” “Who were you with?”one of them asked. “No one til about 1:30am when my Wife came back to the Cabin. She had been out with Tammi…err…I mean Sonya-Lynn” I responded.

 

I was really starting to get freaked out to the point where I started to wonder “Was I sleep walking?” “Was it me?”I looked over towards our Table and yelled “DEEEEEEEEE” and motioned for her to come over. As she was making her way over I asked to ‘see their record’ and as soon as I looked at it I noticed the time and it clicked. Dee had both of our Lanyards in her hand that afternoon and she must have used my S&S Card to try their door. Just before Dee arrived I pointed out the time and date out to the 2 of them and told them what we had done before adding “It was us that told them to go report this. We were trying to help them” As soon as Dee arrived I asked her ‘if she had used 1 of our keys in Tammi and Allison’s door to check their lock?’ to which she answered “Yes” and then I asked her “When did you do that” and she answered “This afternoon” Dee gave them the exact same story Ihad just told them and 3 of the 4 of us had a good laugh before I went to the Bathroom.

 

Once back at the Table I was still a little shook up but at least with everyone cracking up at what I had just been through I could do nothing else but laugh along with them. Dee took off to thePiano Bar to tell Tammi and Allison what had happened and by the time she got back I was ready to colour up and did just that and we went down to the Piano Bar. When we got there the Security Guys were talking to Allison outside the Bar and she looked at me pointed and said “I told you the man had long hair. He is our friend and has NO HAIR.” I had never been happier to NOT be a Member of the Hair Club For Men….and we laughed and we laughed and we laughed.

 

As it turned out the Man would have been going to his Cabin if he was up 1 Deck that Night. When he used his Card the Door pushed open for him because it had not closed properly when Tammi got back to the Cabin that Night.

 

The laughs continued as the Night went along. At the Table the Man from Georgia was on my Left and the Lady from Compton was seated to his Left. Dee was on my Right and then to her Right were Leslee and then Rick. The Lady from Compton, her Husband and the Man from Georgia were African – American. In between 1 of the Hands Dee,who had hit a bit of a dry spell, looked down at her Chips and seeing 2 of the $100 Dollar Black Chips + a several Red $5 Chips, looked up at the Dealer and said very adamantly said “I JUST WANT TO LEAVE THE TABLE TONIGHT WITH A COUPLE OF BLACKS” and the Man from Georgia gave me a nudge in the Side with his Elbow and already laughing said “Well Now. Will ya Listen to that Wife of Yours. You sure you OK with this???” and the Lady from Compton looked at the Dealer and said "See what I mean, This Table is FUN"……..and we laughed and we laughed and we laughed.

 

At about 2:00am I finished my #0DollarBills Drink however Dee still had some left before she would hit her 15 so she ordered a Crown and Coke and Dee, our Waitress and I agreed that I would hold Dee’s Drink for her in my Cup Holder as her Cup Holder was already occupied with her Wine. I held 1more of her drinks before the Night ended and once the Pit Boss announced that there “would be 5 more Hands tonight” we played those Hands, coloured up our Chips and made our way up to our Cabin about 3:00am.

 

Our 1st Visit to San Juan had been a GREAT ONE and the rest of the Day had followed suit.
