BookDragon Posted February 25, 2018 #26 Share Posted February 25, 2018 Cigarette smoke is not a trivial issue. Especially for those who suffer from health conditions aggravated by cigarette smoke. Let guest services and/or security know whenever it occurs as long as you can pinpoint exactly where it is coming from. Hopefully Carnival will consistently fine $250 to the violators. Missileer Posted February 25, 2018 #27 Share Posted February 25, 2018 We cruise Carnival a lot and always with a balcony--it has not been a problem for us. Enjoy!
salty dingo Posted February 25, 2018 #28 Share Posted February 25, 2018 Especially for those who suffer from health conditions aggravated by cigarette smoke. I guess folks with that condition would have to steer clear of the Casino and half the upper deck! They tried a non-smoking cruise ship once (the Pride) and it didn't work out well. Too many smokers out there.

Cigarette smoke exacerbates his health issues. So yes, we are responsible enough to avoid casinos and avoid smoking areas in general. And we appreciate that most smokers are responsible enough to smoke in designated areas giving us the opportunity to avoid the smoke.
JerseyGirlJen Posted February 25, 2018 #31 Share Posted February 25, 2018 If I'm paying extra money for a balcony cabin I want to be able to use my balcony without smelling or breathing in cigarette smoke. There are designated areas on the ship for smokers, but a balcony isn't one of them. If I choose to walk by the smoking section, or walk into the casino, that's my choice and I have no right to complain about the smoke. I do, however, have a right to enjoy my balcony smoke free, as it is a smoke free zone. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
Grammyluvs Posted February 25, 2018 #32 Share Posted February 25, 2018 I sit on the same balcony as a smoker and never smell it. We are outdoors. You may smell the smokestack though. That puts out more pollutants in a second than all the smokers put out in a week. That is very rude. I have multiple lung problems and carry a portable oxygen concentrator and nebulizers along with multiple meds. You maybe use to it but there are others, like me, who would be effected seriously. You don’t know what other people around you are smelling or how it might effect them.

I believe, like hotels, the $250 is a cleaning fee for the cabin or hotel room, not a fine. Smoking on the balcony will only get you a slap on the wrist. BookDragon Posted February 25, 2018 #35 Share Posted February 25, 2018 Section 8. C. Of the cruise contract: c) Any and all forms of smoking, including but not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, electronic cigarettes, and personal vaporizers, are strictly prohibited onboard except in designated exterior open deck areas, certain night clubs, and designated areas in the casino. All staterooms and suite accommodations are entirely smoke free, including the outside balcony (Effective October 9, 2014). Guest agrees to strictly comply with Carnival’s non-smoking policy. Guest further acknowledges and agrees that any violation of this policy shall, in the sole discretion of Carnival, constitute a material breach of this cruise contract. In the event of such breach, Guest forfeits all rights hereunder, including the right to remain on board. Carnival reserves the right to disembark the Guest(s), at any port, as determined by Carnival. Carnival shall not be liable for any refund or other compensation or damages whatsoever to any Guest disembarked pursuant to this provision, or who disembarks because another Guest is so disembarked, and all such Guests forfeit all rights under Carnival’s “Vacation Guarantee.” Guest and Carnival further agree that any violation of the non-smoking policy would also cause Carnival to incur damages, including but not limited to, loss of Guest goodwill, revenue, cleaning, maintenance and/or other costs. Guest and Carnival expressly acknowledge the difficulty of ascertaining the amount of such damages, and therefore agree that a reasonable estimate of the damages for any violation of the non-smoking policy is $250 USD. Guest authorizes a charge in this amount as liquidated damages, as well as repatriation expenses (including airfare) against Guest’s on board charge account, without further notice, for any violation of the non-smoking policy. tradosaurus Posted February 25, 2018 #36 Share Posted February 25, 2018 We had a balcony cabin and did not smell any smoke whatsoever. Had I did smell it I would have reported it or confronted the smoker. I think it's very rude and carnivals was very insistent that you should not be smoking on the balcony. Rare splash_in_the_water Posted February 25, 2018 #38 Share Posted February 25, 2018 hard to tell...guess no more smoking on balconies? I don't smoke but i used to like to sit out and have a drink and a cigar. Smoke doesn't bother me too much. I work with smokers, and it reminds me of the fun times at the bar in my 20's...ahhhh the memories. Anyway, as has been stated, you just never know. I wouldn't dwell on it too much though...minor detail to worry about imo. Happy cruising!

Studies show that smokers tend to drink and gamble more than non smokers....why would a cruise line essentially cut out 16% of the population when they don’t have to? BookDragon Posted February 25, 2018 #40 Share Posted February 25, 2018 According the CDC only 15.5% of the USA smokes now. Maybe they should try it again. And just to expound upon that point, Carnival also states that they changed their policy because only 10% of their cruisers smoke. That was back in 2014. “Why did Carnival change its smoking policy? Given that nearly 90 percent of our guests are non-smokers, we wanted to have our shipboard experience align with today’s guest preferences. We constantly monitor all of our shipboard policies and solicit guest feedback to make sure we stay up to date with consumers’ vacation wants and needs. BookDragon Posted February 25, 2018 #42 Share Posted February 25, 2018 Smoking on the balcony will only get you a slap on the wrist. According to Carnival’s printed policy, not only will a $250 fee be assessed to the guest’s sign & sail account, but I learned something new...the guest could be asked to leave the ship. Sounds like more than just a slap on the wrist.

I have yet to read anywhere on CC where someone suggested doing away with it completely. All I’ve seen are those who want the small percentage who break the rules and smoke on their balconies to only smoke in designated areas.

BookDragon Posted February 26, 2018 #47 Share Posted February 26, 2018 Post #29 I didn’t read post #29 to mean that he/she wanted smoking on ships to be gone completely. It seems that they may have meant that the popularity of smoking is declining, which may result in cruise lines some time in the future going in that direction. Again, I’ve yet to read any poster on CC suggest that smoking should be gone completely.

TrqoisWtrs Posted February 26, 2018 #49 Share Posted February 26, 2018 I've had issues with multiple smokers on surrounding balconies. One time the person's tiny ash tray rolled under the divider into our balcony; this crumpled up cigarette butt with red lipstick smears jammed into this tiny round case. Disgusting. I took it to guest services, but I could still smell them smoking at times after that. This last cruise I had multiple smokers next to me and it was pretty bad. I did say something to guest services, but again, if anything was said to the offenders, it didn't have any effect. So good luck; I've learned to just put up with it unfortunately. Tired of wasting my cruise time on people that feel the rules don't apply to them.
