Not very fair on the thousands and thousands of hard-working crew who would miss out in the process!

I agree, but the 'pain' will be worse if it is a long protracted process, because the change is only going in one direction.

For what its worth, my cynical opinion is that Automatic Service Charge is just an additional charge added by P&O and other cruise lines, Yes you can withdraw it and use envelopes.

But

When the charge is added to the cost of the cruise, there will be a lull ...... and then tipping will then be EXPECTED when you receive excellent service, which will then be added automatically to the bill, and then be added to the cost of the cruise and then........ oh the shareholders will be rolling in the extra dosh...

Told you my view was cynical. but i am smiling

Thomson and Saga have not had auto tips for many years, and have not added any extra service charges, so at least with these two examples your cynicism is unfounded.

P&O Australia and Princess cruises from Oz no longer require tipping, it is built in to the cruise fare, so you need to keep an eye on their comments to see if your cynicism is warranted.
