Luggage on a Viking River Cruise

Can someone please tell me what happens with luggage on a Viking River cruise? Does it get taken from you on arrival at the boat and then delivered to the cabin later or do you take it to the cabin yourself? Likewise, at the end of the trip, is it necessary to put your luggage outside the cabin (as on some larger cruise ships) the night before departure or later to be taken away by the crew or do you deal with it yourself? Any information would be gratefully received. Thanks.

If you have transfers from Viking, the luggage is taken directly to your stateroom when available. For departure, they announce what time luggage has to be placed outside of room. Without transfers, Viking still takes care of luggage when unloading/loading from transportation you have arranged yourself. On a Viking Rhine cruise our flight arrived at about 9 am in Amsterdam. After we were dropped off at the ship, our room was not ready until 3pm. Viking watched our luggage and had it in our room when we returned to the ship at 5pm. They will have snacks and beverages available for guests if you arrive early to the ship.

Thanks for that help. I see that Viking announce what time luggage has to be ready, but is it normally required to be ready for removal the night before you leave the boat or at some point in the (probably quite early) morning?

Thanks

It's in the morning, usually 1.5 hours ahead of departure.

Since there are many different departure times for guests, they will publish the schedule the day before departure and you will be assigned a time that your luggage must be available by. You will leave your luggage outside your stateroom. They issue color coded tags so the crew knows what bags go where and when. It's quite efficient. Also, since there are some very early departures, they have food/snacks/beverages available from the very early morning hours (4 AM?) until everyone leaves.

Can you walk off the ship with your luggage or is it mandatory you have to put it out the night before? Viking will be bring us to the Basel airport.

If Viking are providing your transfer, then yes, they will request that you put the bags outside at a specific time, but it is not necessarily 'the night before' it just depends what time your transfer leaves which is something you'll be told at least a couple of days before the end of your cruise.

It isn't practical to have everyone carrying their bags off at the last minute, especially if you are part of a larger group leaving at the same time and keep in mind that you may not be moored against the dock, there may be one or more other ships between you and the land...

I'll just add that the crew stages the luggage next to where your transportation departs. There you must identify your bags before they place them on the bus. It would be chaotic and potentially dangerous to have passengers trying to exit with all their luggage. Someone would surely drop something, if not themselves, off the gangplank.
