Police hauled 2 people off Breeze in Galveston

A friend of mine and I were coming back from a cruise 2 1/2 years ago and got our bags searched because we didn't claim anything on the customs form coming back (it was a 3 day vacation to the Bahamas, we live in FL, we can go whenever and just didn't buy anything this time around). Anyway, they search our bags top to bottom and find the little little bit of marijuana shake at the bottom of my friends bag (it was just enough to cover the fingertip of a glove and who knows how old it was) and they got fined $500 for possession of an illegal substance. We paid the fine right there and moved on.

Anyway fast forward a year and we're on another cruise that stopped at San Juan. As we're opening the cabin door to leave to get off the boat two Dept of Homeland Security officers are standing there, asked us who we were and said "We need to search the room. Your name is on a list as we've had trouble with you before." Seriously?

So they search the room, bring up the incident that happened a year ago, we kind of laughed at it (because seriously it was something so petty a friggin year ago). They got mad when we didn't think it was that big of a deal then mumbled some derogatory remarks to each other in Spanish (my friend speaks Spanish and understood every word). Then left the room mad that they didn't find anything. One even made the remark that he was ready to arrest both of us to give him something to do.

Oh and to add insult to injury. When we got off on debarkation day back in Ft Lauderdale, they scanned our Sign and Sail cards to leave the boat, and a message came off not to let us off. We had to leave the boat (with a group of about 20 other people) with the Dept of Homeland Security and they took us all into a side room, called us in one by one and searched our bags top to bottom again.

We're going on a cruise again in April and have already joked to be prepared to get searched multiple times and treated like criminals. ;-) By April it will have been almost 3 years since the incident happened.

It was reported in either the NY Times,ABC,NBC or CNN . They were arrested for wearing a Tuxedo and evening gown on a casual night and they were also being followed around on ship as they claimed on cruise critic how much they pre-paid their tips and then bragged how much extra they tipped others, well the investigators following them found out they just pre-paid their tips and didn't tip again. Oh these tip braggarts better watch out.;)

On every cruise, the cruise director will tell everyone not to bring back any weed. It means smoke it or toss it before you get off the boat.

Amazing they make such a big deal about something that is legal in a lot of places, more and more every year. You would think they would use those resources better, like stopping rogue bananas.

A Carnival rep recently told us that if you have a warrant out for your arrest, they will let you cruise, then arrest you when the ship docks.

How nice for the criminal who wants to tan before that Strip Search upon entering Prison. No Embarassing White Buttocks for them because Well, Street Cred and all,lLol!

WHY?WHY?WHY? Do they let people who have outstanding warrants cruise ANYWAY? These folks are CRIMINALS. So that means CRIMINALS are enjoying their vacations alongside law-abiding citizens (or really just lawful folk). Why don't they arrest them BEFORE the ship leaves port ( BUT MAKE THEM STAY FOR MUSTER CAUSE IT'S BORING,LOL) so we don't have to be afraid of the people around us on a SHIP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN! Such a Stupid and Dangerous Policy!

It is impossible to know who is actually on the ship until it sails. LEOs then compare the passenger manifest against the list of those who signed up for the cruise.

The pertinent info (name, sex, dob, etc) is then run through NCIC and state data bases for misdemeanor wants and warrants.

If a serious offender is on the ship, he/she will be arrested at the first port of call that recognizes U. S. warrants.

Keep in mind Carnival isn't the one doing the checking for outstanding warrants, it is CBP.

And this is because Carnival and other cruiselines probably aren't allowed to do a criminal background check on you (invasion of privacy, etc, although I hear they do run your name against the Registered Sex Offender list), but they are required to submit passenger manifests within an hour prior to sailing (or some such timeframe) - and the manifests have to be accurate, so they can't do it a couple of days ahead (which would give time for the authorities to process prior to boarding), so it gets processed while you are cruising. And for the authorities, once they know you are on board, picking you up is fairly easy.

What you are asking for is Immigration/Emigration Exit Control on passengers, which the US does not practice.

Maybe that 'petty' incident wasn't so petty after all. :D

I, for one, and glad they pre-paid their tips and bragged about it. But, the tuxedo and evening gown on a casual night????? They have "got to go"....SA CUR I T!

Exactly! Carnival has no special access to someone's criminal history. The feds need some time to run the manifest, plus, they don't care if criminals are on the boat, they just want to catch them when they come off.

I've always said, a cruise ship is like a small city. And like every city, you have all types of people. Don't expect a criminal-free city nor a criminal-free cruise.

Sounds more like a FOX news report to me.

that way carnival keeps your money for the room.

Carnival is not to blame in these instances.

CBP checks the names and bios of the passengers who actually board the ship on embarkation day. Those who have felony wants and warrants (state or Federal) and those who have serious misdemeanor wants and warrants and the state/local authorities will extradite are arrested when the ship returns to home port.
