Shantilly Posted January 28, 2018 #1 Share Posted January 28, 2018 Hello! I will be a first time solo cruiser and am looking for the best ones to check out. Also wondering how to get around being charged so much for a balcony room. I want my own room. Thank you!
Rare Roz Posted January 28, 2018 #2 Share Posted January 28, 2018 What are your choices from Galveston? Most cruise lines charge solos double for anything above an inside or outside. Unless you can stumble upon some last minute deal, there's no way around it. We solos pay a premium for privacy. Roz

Rare Lois R Posted January 28, 2018 #4 Share Posted January 28, 2018 I agree with Roz, the prices are what they are.........I have been cruising solo for 15 years and for me, it is worth it, whatever the price is to have my own cabin.:)
mef_57 Posted January 29, 2018 #5 Share Posted January 29, 2018 Sounds like a last minute cruise would suit you as far as price goes. If uou can leave with short notice and drive to the port, you can just start to regularly watch for last minute sales. Unfortunately, we arn't supposed to mention other websites, but you could google 'last minute cruises' to review some sites. Also look at the last recent entries on tjis post for hints of websites from the screenshots or recent sales https.://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2396334&page=24 Infact reading some of these posts will give you an idea of which cruiselines might be better for affordable balconies. Royal Caribbean offers a single traveler balcony room, but those are bound to sell out early.
tiger-91 Posted January 30, 2018 #6 Share Posted January 30, 2018 Use cruiseplum.com to search for 1 passenger and filter for Galveston as the departure port. Sent from my SM-G930T using Tapatalk
Rare Roz Posted January 30, 2018 #7 Share Posted January 30, 2018 When I asked what your options are, I meant in terms of cruise lines. Roz
mef_57 Posted January 30, 2018 #8 Share Posted January 30, 2018 When I asked what your options are, I meant in terms of cruise lines. Roz You also asked how to get around the more expensive balcony costs - which I think is what many of the answers were directed to. As to which cruise lines from Galveston, it depends on what sails from there and what you are expecting? Perhaps a visit to a cruise specialist travel agent would help? Ship lines tend to cater to a certain demographic. Without more information, I couldn't assume you are my age group, or have similar interests, so I can't advise a particular line. An agent better knows, after discussion with you, what your best match would be, however, I did a quick look for what leaves from Galveston and it is Royal Caribbean or Carnival. If you don't have a preference of ship line, then choose by length of cruise, itinerary and cost. If you don't know how to find what leaves Galveston, do a Google search of 'cruises from Galveston in ???2018) ??? being the relevant month you want to travel. Keep in mind the shorter the cruise, the more of a boozy party boat it will be. Both lines are about activities and 'fun', with RCI having more of a wow factor. As for solo travelers, I travel and make my own interests so whether a cruise line has solo events, it doesn't matter to me...so again, I can't advise. You can read more about the specific ships on the non-boards part of Cruise Critic.
puerto penasco lady Posted February 19, 2018 #9 Share Posted February 19, 2018 I have gone solo out of Galveston several times on Liberty of the Seas. It is a beautiful ship with lots of activities. I never really look for solo activities. I get involved in the CC roll call and socialize with all ages on board whether they are solo or couples. Trivia is another activity that is great for meeting people. I have made many cruise friends that I stay in touch with. I very often find myself on another cruise with them. Enjoy your cruise. accio_7 Posted February 19, 2018 #10 Share Posted February 19, 2018 I’m not sure when you want to cruise, but currently these ships sail out of Galveston: - Royal Caribbean: Liberty of the Seas, Vision of the Seas, Enchantment of the Seas - Carnival: Freedom, Breeze, Valor, Vista, Dream - Disney: Wonder AFIK, none of those ships offer studio staterooms so you’ll be looking at paying single supplement (150 to 200%) for your stateroom. Are you currently working with a TA? If you’re flexible, and can book less than three months out, you might score a great last minute deal; google last minute cruise deals for the info. (We aren’t allowed to post links here on CC.) Good luck! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Earl Colby Pottinger Posted February 20, 2018 #11 Share Posted February 20, 2018 I have do solo on the Breeze and Dream as a solo. I have only one complaint. If you mix up directions you can walk the entire length of the ship only to find what you want is on the other end of the ship which means another long walk. :) Both times I was on big table at mealtimes with nothing but solos so we all had something in common, but they did come from all walks of life. There were tons of things to do on the ships that even with one cruise was 21 days and the other was a 8 day cruise I still did not get to do everything there was to do on-board. And once you go solo you can't go back. After going solo the first time is freedom, even now when I travel with a friend we now get separate rooms. That is what I will be doing on my next resort trip to Cuba, the trip to Eagle's Nest in BC was also separate rooms, and to the Florida Keys. We found having separate rooms means you sleep and wake on your own schedule, and that really makes a vacation a real vacation.
