Rare babs135 Posted February 26, 2018 #1 Share Posted February 26, 2018 This question also applied to St. Maarten. I often read about people getting into a taxi and doing an 'island tour' and have often considered doing this but as my heading says I'm a coward and (feeling foolish as I type this) have visions of being 'ripped off' or even worse!! Can you assure me and DH that this isn't the case? Perhaps the answer would be to find another couple to share the taxi - safety in numbers, etc etc :D
Ms411 Posted February 26, 2018 #2 Share Posted February 26, 2018 The taxi rates are set by the VI govt and are posted online and on many websites, so you should know the price in advance. You will most likely be sharing a taxi with others so everybody will be paying same thing. Taxis in VI can hold up to 20+ passengers depending on type of vehicle. ARandomTraveler Posted February 26, 2018 #3 Share Posted February 26, 2018 Very safe place to get an independent taxi. They also have “buses” that are cheap ($2 I think), which are really just vans that look the same as the “taxis” but are cheaper. We’ve been to St Maarten twice with kids ranging from age 2-13 and took them in independent taxis and felt very safe, and never had a problem. I’ve even been there as a Mom with my young child by myself, and ridden in taxis just the two of us, no problems. Talex831 Posted March 1, 2018 #4 Share Posted March 1, 2018 You can always book a tour with a tour operator. We booked through Viator. I know the ship excursions are more expensive, but they’re an option too. I travel alone with my 11 y/o, so I’m not really brave enough to just “wing it” and get a taxi. Rare MeganGC1983 Posted March 1, 2018 #5 Share Posted March 1, 2018 There's always different vendors. We are doing a Sunny Liston tour in St. Thomas on an open air bus. The website tells you upfront how much, where it's going, and what you'll be doing. They have different options for different people. You will be fine. [emoji6] Have fun and enjoy.
