Expanded Oasis cruise review: February 18, 2018

Recommended Posts

Boardwalk view with balconies: 8311,8313,8315: We were directly above Sabor, directly across from Johnny Rockets. The loudest thing we heard was the bell when someone climbed the rockwall. We had an obstructed view of the Aqua theater and a decent ocean view. We really liked our rooms. We went back and forth between rooms with the dividers open frequently. 8311 and 8315 have beds by the closet. 8313 by the doors. My parents had enough room to store their folded up wheelchair between the couch and the sliding door.

great review. So sorry you had so much trouble with security. I haven't sailed out of PC yet so praying we don't have problems as you did.

Thanks. The biggest thing I learned is that I would be more outspoken about not separating and if they still insisted, I would make sure my parents had their cell phone turned on. I also wish I had had them pack their nebulizer in their suitcase. PC security was stricter than the airport. We did not have lines and had that not happened, we would have probably been on the ship in 15 minutes.

Thank you everyone for your encouragement on my review. I have read and researched on cruise critic for my last three cruises. My family teases me about my obsession. I wish we could afford to cruise more frequently. I reread my last review and it was very short compared to this one. I also did not not do pictures so this is a first for me.

Like everyone else has said, our first view of Oasis was awe-inspiring. It has hard to believe that Promenade is on a cruise ship. My son went on the ship spoiler free and he walked into the promenade and stopped in place staring.

I had originally planned to eat lunch at the Park Cafe, but my the time my parents finally made it through security, we decided we might be better off going to the Solarium.

We never ended up eating lunch at the Park cafe. I would have liked to try their version of beef on wick being a Western New York, the home of beef on wick, but we never made it there for lunch. Nana, my son, and I had many pre-breakfasts there. We decided it was not the best place to eat for someone who is gluten free. They probably had gluten fee options, but my husband preferred other locations.

The Solarium for lunch was not overcrowded when we arrived around 12:45 and we were able to get a table for 6. My mom and I really enjoyed the gazpacho and salads. My dad and husband were able to find plenty. My children were not happy with the options. We did not eat there again all week.

We are also from WNY, NT to be exact. We have had the Beef on Weck from the Park Cafe and although good, it cannot compare to back home. Good review.

Monday morning, my mother, son, and myself were up early as usual. We started what would be our routine for this cruise: going to Park Cafe for coffee, tea, pastries, and fruit followed by wandering the ship. After everyone else woke up we had breakfast at the Windjammer. We ended up eating at the Windjammer more than I expected to this cruise. As long as you go early (we were usually there before 9) the crowds and table situation was not bad. There were usually plenty of free tables towards the back. They had a whole gluten free station for my husband and he had many options for breakfast. We all felt the food was good and the staff was quick to help us with my parents food.

What is beef on wick or weck?

Something I haven’t heard of ?

Actually it is wick, my auto correct changed it. It is slow roasted beef sliced thin and piled high on a kimmelwick bun (think Kaiser roll baked with a kimmelwick seed and salt mixture on top) very yummy.

Thanks for answering. We are a little further out of Buffalo so we have to drive a bit to get the best beef on wick. We live near Letchworth Park. I went to college in Buffalo.

On this sea day we had no difficulty getting shaded loungers for 4, however later in the week, chairs became a huge problem. It was windy and chilly, so maybe that is why the chairs were not full by mid morning. The pools were chilly so we never stayed in long.

We swam and hot-tubbed prior to getting to dressed to go Johnny Rockets for the lunch that was included in the boardwalk balcony package. We had also finally received our glasses then. My daughter almost missed our free lunch as a family as she had gotten stuck at the front of the ship on deck 6 and could not figure out how to get to the back. We had run into the same problem on 4 the night before and to our annoyance had to cut through the very smoky casino.

Lunch at Johnny Rockets was good and our server was great, but I would not pay $9 to eat there. We could see Johnny Rockets from our balcony and they were never busy at lunch or dinner. They were very busy at breakfast however.

During lunch there was an announcement that they had added an extra parade. So we rushed over after we finished eating and stood at the railing near the picture area to watch the end.

We relaxed, read, and swam all afternoon prior to dinner in the MDR. This was the first formal night and dinner was good. We had been told that they would celebrate our anniversary at this meal, but nothing was said or done.

We returned to our room briefly and happened to catch our room steward making up our room. He did a short presentation for us on how to make them.

We then tried to go to our reservations for the Oasis of Dreams show. The line was back to the carousel when they decided it was cancelled. I was not surprised, but wished they had told us before we stood and waited in that line.

We decided to go to Cats that night since Oasis of Dreams was cancelled. We did standby, but had no trouble getting two seats together and avoided the poles. We enjoyed the show, although I will admit to dozing off. I love the music and sand most of the songs in my high school choir but the end of the first act drags. I woke up when they cut off the show due to technical issues. The show did not resume until the second half. At least 3/4 of the audience left. The second half was better than the first. The musicians were great and I will return to that subject later in the report.

While we were at Cats, my parents went to bed and the kids were at teen club.

My husband just uploaded his photos so I can add a fun one from his camera. This pictures shows just how much you will walk. By the end of the week my fitbit read 35 miles and I did not always have it on.

The hallway was clear when my husband took the photo, but note how narrow the hallway is. At least twice a day the hallways would be filled with the stewards carts. Completely understandable, but completely frustrating when pushing a wheelchair. I should have taken a picture. We often had to move carts into doorways and then back out. Add food trays, etc, and it made life interesting.

We woke up Saturday morning and had a nice, free breakfast at the hotel. I tried at this time to sign up for the shuttle, however were told we could not sign up for the cruise shuttle until mid afternoon. After breakfast, we eventually headed out for a round of mini golf followed by a nice lunch. We are lunch at A NY pizza house. Gluten free note: my husband had great gluten free pizza and they had many other gluten free options as well. We are NYS pizza snobs and the pizza was delicious. The portions are so big it became our dinner as well. After lunch, we dropped Papa and grandson off in the room and went to the front desk to sign up for the shuttle. We were now allowed to sign up for the shuttle. I was told there was only one shuttle option. They said the first shuttle goes to Disney, the second to Carnival, and the third to Royal Caribbean. We were signed up for an 11:30 shuttle much to our disappointment.

Nana, my husband, my daughter, and I then went to Wildlife Watersports to kayak. My mom and I rented a Craigcat, which are very cool, 2 persons, motorized cruisers. My daughter went out on a SUP and my husband in a kayak. We had to pay for 4 hours for the kayaks, but only stayed out for two. The craigcats are rented for two hours. They were very helpful in assisting my mother in and out of the boat. We had a lot of fun and even saw a dolphin.

On our way back to pick up Papa and my son, we stopped at the Key Lime Pie Factory and bought a key lime pie for with our leftovers. It was delicious!

We went to Jetty Park to watch the ships leave. It was a little more expensive than I anticipated: $15 since we were not from Brevard county. We had a lot of fun and it was very handicapped accessible. My kids walked on the beach a little and my daughter picked up shells.

We then returned to the hotel for our leftovers and some swimming (very nice pool and hot tub).

I noticed lots of people struggling with shuttles from cocoa beach to the port. In the future I would suggest uber- easy and with multiple people cheaper than the shuttles.

Thanks for the advice. We only had to pay for two people for the shuttle and it turned out fine, but Uber probably would have been easier. We were afraid to separate with Uber’s.

Also on Monday we missed the meet and mingle. We are pool people and no one wanted to leave the pool to go. Also no one wanted to go with me. I hope everyone had a good time.

Yes I’m sorry you got separated at security. That’s completely unacceptable and scary. I would complain.

We leave for our first Oasis trip in 6 days. I am in a wheelchair and really appreciate your detailed review and all of the insights you have shared. We did get an accessible room on the boardwalk, as I need the roll in shower.

When we sailed on Allure at Christmas one year, we too had issues with security at Port Canaveral. They made my dear mother-in-law do a stip search when she forgot her medical card that indicated she had a metal hip replacement. She was 85. Embarrassing and scary for her. I was in my wheelchair and insisted on staying with her. They did not make me leave. The did make the rest of the family meet us later. We told them to meet us by the Christmas tree and not leave without us. They made me take out my portable oxygen generator, and I told them they could not turn it off as I needed it to breath - they still disconnected the battery to 'inspect' it - so I had had no air for about 5 minutes - which was not big deal, but frustrating. This did not happen on our previous cruises out of Canaveral, and never out of Tampa or Lauderdale. I'm all for keeping the ships safe, but keeping us safe from little old ladies with wheelchairs and oxygen and nebulizers and replacement hips may be going overboard.
