Rare Essiesmom Posted March 14, 2018 #4 Share Posted March 14, 2018 India is a Hindu country, although there are some Muslins remaining. the parts that were primarily Muslim are now Pakistan and Bangla Desh. EM
paul929207 Posted March 14, 2018 #5 Share Posted March 14, 2018 I think there are still close to 200,000,000 Muslims in India. They are more spread out than the ones in Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Arzeena Posted March 14, 2018 #6 Share Posted March 14, 2018 Does anyone know if you have to wear a scarf to cover your hair if you are an American? Only if you are visiting a holy place, a shrine, a temple, a mosque, etc and if you see other women covering their heads in such places. More out of respect for whatever is going on and what type of place you are visiting, rather than a requirement.
Rare mom says Posted March 14, 2018 #7 Share Posted March 14, 2018 You will want to brush up on your cultural awareness for any middle eastern or South Asia/Asia Ports you will visit. Mostly when visiting holy places , whether they are shrines, temples or mosques. Unlike NA or parts of Europe, many of these countries strictly enforce dress codes at these places. Online tourism sites are usually good sources of info (I've been finding some very useful info on Lonely Planet). Also check out the Middle East and Asia (I've seen India questions on both) Ports of Call forums here on CC . Hindu temples do have rules. Here's just one of many articles I found by googling. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jan/01/hindu-temples-in-southern-india-enforce-western-clothing-ban

Us Australians, UK citizens, Europeans no need. Just kidding. In Asia as in most areas of Europe and the Middle East it is respectful to wear a head covering in temples, churches etc. Most places will provide you with one if you don’t have one. I carry a light scarf in my day pack. Sometimes you will be expected to cover shoulders if you are wearing a sleeveless top and short shorts are generally not appropriate. Signs we use - like the finger and thumb OK sign - are offensive in places like Turkey. There are plenty websites you can check so you do not inadvertently cause offence.
