Joebucks Posted April 4, 2018 #26 Share Posted April 4, 2018 We buy insurance anyway. The Chase Sapphire cards don't cover medical evacuation or preexisting conditions. They basically cover the kinds of things we could self insure, but not the big expenses that would affect our retirement future. The Reserve absolutely covers medical evacuation, up to $100,000. You don't need any higher of a limit. The pre-existing condition thing will greatly vary across the board. If you have a serious one, serious research will need to be done. Most will not cover it. Some will charge extra.

Chase Reserve probably has over twenty different credi cards - they do not all cover medical evacuation. Some offer medical benefits for accidents; very different than true medical insurance. That's good to know. I don't think the Sapphire Preferred offers any, which is what we have now. I've been trying to explain to my husband why the Reserve might be worth the extra fee (really not that much extra with the $300 annual travel credit). Could be worth doing before we pay off next years cruise to get 3x points for it. My preexisting condition is mildly high blood pressure, which is managed with medicine. SPacificbound Posted April 7, 2018 #29 Share Posted April 7, 2018 To me the most important insurance is medical and medical evacuation.
evandbob Posted April 7, 2018 #30 Share Posted April 7, 2018 For frequent travelers, an annual insurance policy can be a less expensive option than insuring each individual vacation. Everyone's needs and situations vary, so due diligence requires a side by side comparision of the policy coverages.
buggins0402 Posted April 7, 2018 #31 Share Posted April 7, 2018 Individual needs also vary according to what is covered on medical in their regular health policies. If someone has international coverage with low deductibles, there would be different coverage gaps to fill when traveling. With regard to the Sapphire cards, this link describes the difference between the Reseeve and Preferred: http://frequentmiler.boardingarea.com/2017/08/24/sapphire-reserve-travel-insurance/
