tntcruise Posted August 10, 2018 #1 Share Posted August 10, 2018 Heading to naples in sept. On ncl epic. Would like to see as much as possible in one day. Starting with the speed ferry to capri, chairlift, and anacapri in the morning, but was hoping was wondering if it's possible to take a ferry from capri to positano or somewhere else near there and do alittle tour heading back to the ship including Pompeii and or other sites. Any advice is appreciated
euro cruiser Posted August 10, 2018 #2 Share Posted August 10, 2018 It's a stretch but you could do Capri in the morning and Pompei in the afternoon before returning to the ship. It is not possible to also include the Amalfi Coast unless you have access to a helicopter.
sbflcruiser Posted August 31, 2018 #3 Share Posted August 31, 2018 We did this a few years ago, but do to the hydrofoil schedules and our early arrival, we started with catching the bus right in front of the ship to the train station, bought the ticket at the little news stand, visited Pompeii, however, check out the departing train schedules for the most efficient use of time, caught the train to Sorrento, then walked down to the ferry from the train station, caught the Hydrofoil over to Capri, we purchased our return ticket as soon as we got off the hydrofoil for the return back to Naples from Capri, we then purchased round-trip tickets for the cable car. If was a very full day, might have had a little doze on the hydrofoil back to Naples. We started with a group of 16 from our roll call to do this trip, DH and I were the only ones that made the full loop, several wanted more down time and not as much walking so many decided to just spend the rest of the day in Sorrento and Hydrofoil back to Naples from there. There are lots of options but you can always modify the plan along the way as many of our roll call members did. It makes for a very long day, where you are moving all day along a very port intensive itinerary. It was going to be almost an hour after we could disembarked before the first hydrofoil to Capri, which is why we reversed our direction of travel. Rare cruisemom42 Posted August 31, 2018 #4 Share Posted August 31, 2018 It is possible (reports are given here from time to time like the one above) but just barely, to do a circuit from Naples - Capri - Sorrento - Pompeii - Naples. Or vice versa. However, it is a gruelling schedule and I can't imagine most who do it bring back more than some photos and a few fleeting memories of each place -- if that much. If you do this, you'll spend a lot of time in transit. It's at least an hour between Capri and Naples, and at least a half hour by train between Naples and Pompeii and also between Sorrento and Pompeii. In what is usually at most a 12-hour day, do you want to spend a minimum of 3 hours traveling (not counting any necessary waiting time to board ferries, trains, etc.) Some will now come and suggest that by doing a private tour, you can do Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast, which is true and is not a terrible plan since a private tour seems to be the easiest way to get to some of the Amalfi Coast towns. (By the way, Sorrento is not on the Amalfi Coast....) But there is still a lot of time spent driving, and most private tours only drive on the famous highway one way, not both ways. And I would not try to throw Capri into the mix. Once again -- at risk of sounding like a broken record -- one has to make some choices in Naples, it's just not possible to do it all. And doing too much can be much more frustrating than concentrating on one or two places and really enjoying them to the fullest. (IMO, of course.) 3sacharm Posted August 31, 2018 #5 Share Posted August 31, 2018 I did a private excursion with Italy Tours.EU, who we loved, of Pompeii, Sorrento and Positano. It was well worth the money and had 2-3 hours in Pompeii, a lot more to see and hear about than I imagined! We decided to skip Naples because we so much negative about crime and theft. They picked us up at the port at 8:15am and we had 8 hours of touring on a small bus that held 16-20 people max. Entry fee to Pompeii is 13 Euros to be paid on spot. Really enjoyed the day and would recommend it!
BarbinMich Posted September 1, 2018 #6 Share Posted September 1, 2018 Another more workable idea would be to visit Ercolano (site of Herculaneum, which is similar to Pompeii, but smaller), Sorrento and the Amalfi coast. We did a private group tour from Naples that included these places and it was a wonderful and varied day.
TeeRick Posted September 2, 2018 #7 Share Posted September 2, 2018 You will be disappointed - there is just not enough time to enjoy the day with what you propose. Spend the day in Capri or go to Pompeii - both are great experiences not to be rushed!
