From Semi-Live to Is It Alive? to Where Did they Go and Other Unsolved Mysteries.......We are back!  In both a good and a sad way. Good because we can get back to updating this thread, sad because we are doing it from our couch, not the Sky or Top Sail Lounge.

 

We will probably try to knock out the last of this review, then write the comprehensive one for the review page, all before the end of the year.  Doing our best to not repeat last year's review where we finally finished it sometime in August. No promises, as well, you know, it's us......

So we did take a look into the couch to see if opened up into another bed, and as far as we could tell, it does not.  Their room steward was never around when we were by their room, so we didn't have a chance to ask him.  Also wanted to add is there is a mini closet and under the bunk storage not pictured in the bunk area.

Those upper and lower bunk beds remind me of old Pullman open section sleeping cars....

They don't appear long enough in the photo for adults...any idea how long the bunks are?

Those bunks are more than long enough for adults.  Our good friend often found himself in bed if he stayed out too late and the kids took his spot on the big bed. Just adults need to keep in mind the lack of headroom between bunks, as theres not much space there.

 

He did say that they reminded him of being in the military, the old style barracks bunks, but much more comfortable

We may have missed that end of year goal, but we are still way ahead of that August deadline, so I'll call that a success.

 

That said, we are going to hammer out this review.  We will be doing in a more comprehensive thought vomit of a review vs a day by day.  Also will break it up, to interject a random selection of photos so that it isn't a wall of text.  If any repeat pictures make it through, I blame my editor but lucky you for getting to see the picture again for free!

 

Onwards to Part 1....

 

Embarkation:

We boarded in Genoa, Italy. We arrived at the terminal around 11 am.  We dropped our luggage off at the main luggage point on the ground floor behind the ship.  We did not see the Yacht Club check in point near there like it had been the year prior. Entering the terminal, we had a hard time finding where to go for Yacht Club check-in, until we were brought to the desk on the upper level.  Here we finished our check-in, then waited for a couple of other groups to finish as well. In the meantime we were given a welcome glass of champagne. Shortly afterwards, a butler came down and escorted us and three other groups on board.  Upon arrival into the Yacht Club, we were escorted down to our cabin, 15029, only to find it wasn’t quite ready for us yet. We were then seated in the Top Sail Lounge, and where they offered us a drink, which we gladly accepted. A short time later, the Head Butler came in, saying our cabin was now ready, and took us back to the room. Once again it wasn’t quite ready, so we went to the restaurant for our first lunch. After lunch we were brought to the room a third time, and this time it was all set and ready.  We met our Butler, Jacques, grabbed our room keys then went off to the ship. We received our luggage in our room sometime between one and four.

 

While we went through the Yacht Club check-in process, we had friends who are a family of four who went through the normal process.  Like us, they dropped their large bags at the main drop-off point, then went into the normal check-in line. Because they were travelling with two small children, they were given priority boarding.  Breezing through the check-in desk, security and gangway, they were on board before we even left the Yacht Club lounge. By noon their room was ready. By 1230 or so, their luggage was awaiting them outside their door.

 

Ship:

The Meraviglia was outstanding. She is well kept, easy to navigate, and has plenty to do on board. Many bars and lounges were open often with many different activities going on. Dancing lessons happen mostly at Meraviglia Bar, which is conveniently located right on the Galleria. Above that is the TV Bar and Studio which is the place to listen and participate in some fantastic karaoke! Although, the place to be no matter what time is the Sky Lounge on deck 18! They have unique cocktails and a pianist with vocalist there every night providing soft, jazz like music. The theatre, while small, we found to have ample space for each show while keeping it more intimate instead of crazy packed.

 

Yacht Club:

Yacht Club was everything we had heard it was and hoped it would be. The attentive service, the wonderful lounge, excellent restaurant, and private pool deck was all that we could want.  They truly seem to have the best staff on board working the Yacht Club. That said, we would absolutely sail in Yacht Club again, as long as we are either sailing by ourselves or with a group all in Yacht Club.  We felt as if we missed a lot of the offerings and amenities by not spending as much time within the complex as we could have, while still enjoying the rest of the ship. But for the price, it surely is the best deal on the market for everything that you get included.  We will sail in the Yacht Club any chance we can, but if we can’t, it wouldn’t be a make or break in cruising MSC for us.

This review is amazing. I admit I'm picking it up after the live/semi-live but still. Glued for the rest. I am about 85-90% that it'l be the Mera I'll be going on next. I have a few cruise options selected, and when I have the deposit together next Friday (not tomorrow!) I'll be calling MSC - the joys of being an Irish customer - and the Mera is my first choice (looking at going end March, beginning April so classed as last minute) so hoping it's available. If not it'l likely be the Divina, but the Mera has Cirque so...... fingers crossed. As I am going solo I don't think I'll be stretching to the YC this time (going YC with balcony on the Prez in October!) it'l most likely be Fantastica and hopefully an outside but should still be fab.

Now for Review 2: Done Before August!

Somewhere in the Mediterranean a few short weeks ago, the cruise critics blah blah blah....

 

Spa:

We absolutely love the thermal area on board.  While not being the largest thermal area, it definitely is spacious and relaxing enough to make us want to go back day after day. The thermal area has three relaxation rooms, one Himalayan Salt Room and two regular relaxation rooms with about 8-12 loungers each. There are two Jacuzzis, one that you lay on steel loungers so that you aren’t fully submerged, and another one that you fully sit in.  There are six hot rooms; two saunas, two steam rooms, and two Med baths. The three styles have two sub categories, a light sensory and dark sensory. The basic difference is if it is brighter or darker, but with the same overall atmosphere. A note about the hot rooms, if the doors do not close all the way, the rooms will actually go into what I presumed was an energy saving mode. The dark sensory steam room for example, I walked into and there was no steam and was much cooler than the other one. So if you enter a room and doesn’t quite feel right, just seal the door and wait a few minutes.There is also a bank of Cold Rain or Cold Breeze showers with an ice room on the side closest to the saunas.  The two Med baths are down an offshoot hallway, across from each other. At the end, is the lounger Jacuzzi and three stone loungers. There is a wall of fresh towels both by the stone loungers and near the entrance. The locker rooms have showers, towels, sinks, the works. On port days, the thermal area is usually very quite, and on the sea days in is noticeably more busy. Staff comes in pretty regularly to check cleanliness,towel stocks, etc. Staff are super friendly and very welcoming, although they can be a bit pushy when it comes to trying to sell massages. Admittedly it worked on us when a special came up that we figured was worth it, so be mindful if you are going only for the thermal area.  This cruise I had a Bali sport massage and Macon had a rejuvenating facial treatment. Both were excellent services and felt were worth the price paid. Of course, we didn’t learn anything from last year, and did not pre-book the treatments.

 

Cabin:

We had a Yacht Club Interior suite, room 15029.  Overall the room was very nice, comfortable bed, and well appointed toiletries in the bathroom.  The room did feel smaller than our Fantastica interior room the year prior, but not by much. The bathroom did feel smaller than the cabin last year, but was on par with the one we had on Symphony of the Seas earlier this year. There was a chair in the room which felt completely out of place, as it was a plastic wicker chair, which felt like it was brought down from the pool areas.  We used it primarily as a place to put our backpack. Decent amount of space in the closet to put our clothes up, but heavy packers will feel the pinch for space.

 

Food:

Overall food exceeded our expectations.  The Yacht Club restaurant had very good selection of meals each night, always hot, and there was nothing that we ordered that we disliked. Breakfast in the restaurant was always a solid choice, with fresh breads, pastries, and fruit available as well as eggs cooked to order.  Breakfast at the poolside buffet was a better choice for us when the weather was nice. You could get eggs made to order, fresh waffles, a selection of fresh fruits, pastries, and always a good selection of hot foods. While the standard coffee in the restaurant was good drip coffee, the bartender up in the buffet made the best cafe lattes and macchiatos.  The lunch buffet on deck was different every day, featuring a pasta of the day and a grilled item of the day. The main buffet carried standard fare, with the Ethnic corner always being the busiest and best part of the buffet. Pizza was always fresh and hot, but otherwise pretty standard. One lunch down in the Waves restaurant was a huge disappointment. The menu was small, with only three options.  The lamb of the day was okay, a little overcooked. Service was awful, very slow, and poor communication from server to guests in the area where we ate at.

 

Shows:

We saw three main theater shows this trip, A guest act (Magician/ Shadow Puppeteer) Virtual, and Born to Rock.

 

The guest act was interesting.  First he started off with sleight of hand tricks.  Nothing to special, and anyone paying attention could figure it out.  But his shadow puppet show he did with his hands was out of this world.  Very impressive, and definitely the highlight of his act.

 

Virtual was interesting show about a dream a man has where he is trapped in his phone, interacting within the various apps.  Some parts were more entertaining than others, but I feel as if it could be interpreted differently based on how often one would use such apps on a normal basis.  Overall a very engaging show for us.

 

Born to Rock was a show based on a collection of classic rock. Definitely more so on the classic side, heavily featuring Elvis, The Beatles, Woody Guthrie, etc. Some 80’s rock makes into the mix to, such as a really good guitar solo cover of The Wall from Pink Floyd, Tina Turner, and ends with Queen.  Great show overall.

 

We missed out on the Cirque shows this time.  Our friends did catch Viaggio, and said it was pretty a good show.  The night we wanted to catch it, as well as the night our friends wanted to catch Sonor, they had a technical difficulty which cancelled the shows.

 

Crew:

The crew aboard is quite multicultural, which is really nice. It provides every guest on board with someone who speaks their language, thus breaking the language barriers that happen on many US based cruise lines. Also, while many state the crew is stone faced and not kind, we have never found that to be an issue. Greet anyone with a smile and they are always quick to smile back and help in anyway possible. A good chunk of the crew speak English, which is helpful for us, but most of them speak anywhere from 2-8 languages.  We did have some standout waitresses, Maria in the Sky Lounge and Smita in the Brass Anchor Pub. Quick to greet us anytime they saw us, and quickly learned our favorites, and in the case of Maria, would bring us new ones. Our Butler, Jacques and his assistant Nilheesh, were fantastic. The crew that were in charge of the Yacht Club buffet and bar were a great team, and even on the days where the weather wasn’t the best, they had great attitude and were fun to learn a little about crew life from. I really wish I remembered all their names to give them the proper recognition.

 

Ports:

The itinerary for this run was Genoa, Civitavecchia (Rome), Palermo, Malta, Day at Sea, Barcelona, Marseille, and back to Genoa. In itself, this itinerary is awesome! It provides just enough variation of countries and ports that you can see so many different things. Civitavecchia, we did not get off. We’ve been to Rome before and did not see reason to get off and go again, so this port provided a great Ship day for us. Palermo was great. Even with having been before, we still got off an enjoyed the Hop-On Hop-Off bus to take in the various sights, architecture, markets, and gardens. They are always a wonder to see. We did the exact cruise itinerary last year and missed Malta, so our fingers were crossed we would make it to Malta this go around. Alas, Mother Nature was not on our side and we missed Malta once again. Maybe we are the bad luck? Who knows. The bridge and captain decided to make the day another cruise day, giving us 2 days at sea. Therefore, we made the Ship our destination for those two days. Barcelona is a city we love in Europe! It’s classic and modern all mushed together. We took a stroll up to the Saint Joseph Boqueria, the market right off La Rambla.We actually got a chance to walk around and take in all the market had to offer for tourists like ourselves. Then we opted to take a Hop-On Hop-Off bus tour as we wanted to make our way towards Tibidabo. Unfortunately for us, once we got to the Tibidabo stop and hopped off, we found that the Funicular railway was closed for winter except for the weekends, which put a wrench in our plans. Back to the Hop-On Hop-Off bus we went and made our way back towards the starting point. We made our way back to the market to grab lunch then back to the boat we went. The last port for us was the one we least looked forward to, the port of Marseille. It’s not that we don’t like Marseille, this was the first time we actually got off at the port. France just isn’t on our to-do list of places to visit. We got off and caught a taxi from the port to the city center where we found a lovely Christmas Market that we walked around and bought some soaps. After exploring a few avenues, most of the group we were with was ready to head back.  We did notice there was some broken windows and other damage from recent protests, but nothing too bad. Back in Genoa we took some time to stroll around the streets closest to the train station before grabbing a quick meal and taking off on the train back home.

 

Other thoughts:

 

At the start of our cruise, there was an elevator bank that had a new express system installed.  Express is a loose term in our opinion, but the whole system reverted back to a standard elevator bank by the time we left Palermo. No notice or anything, and in the end, only one elevator was left on deck 4 with an out of service message.  

 

On the subject of elevators, the Priority Service feature for Yacht Club members was hit or miss on when it would work.  It was also easy for anyone on board the elevator who was paying attention to hijack the elevator that a Yacht Club guest tried to hijack themselves.  Interesting perk, but one that wasn’t well explained nor one that works consistently. Even when you get the system to recognize a priority call, more often than not, another elevator in the bank will call on your floor in the direction you wish to go before your priority elevator.  Admittedly, if you do overtake an elevator successfully, it is kind of fun to see the confusion on the other guest faces.

 

There is a stone lounger in the spa that never seems to be on, whether this is intentional or not I am not sure.  I asked about it once, but I don’t remember the answer. I feel like it was intentional, as this same one was not heated last year either. It’s the middle one if anyone is curious.

 

We tried the Afternoon Tea service one day in the Top Sail Lounge. There were a couple of tables set for it, and we sat down at one. When the butler on duty asked if we would like anything to drink, we said we would like to do the tea service.  It was a bit longer than expected when he came back with the trolley of teas, which left in front of us. Then came back again a few minutes later to see what we wanted.  After choosing our teas, he then went to get the hot water, came back with one pot, poured it, went back for the other pot, then came back again to pour the last one.  Afterwards he left with the tea trolley and we had our tea.  Which is fine and dandy, but my understanding of afternoon tea service is probably a bit skewed based on service I remember on Princess when I was younger.  On Princess, I recall having people come around with not only tea, but little finger sandwiches, tarts, pastries and other snacks.  Even the Daily Planner shows a butler seemingly providing such service when mentioning the afternoon tea. So I was a little bummed at first, but that awesome snack bar right across from the bar had everything we wanted, so no real loss.  

 

Also seems that most of the growing pains of a new ship were worked out otherwise, crew seemed a lot more confident of where things were, and the technology was working with no major hiccups, well minus a couple of glitchy photo preview stations.

Thermal area entrance. Salt room to the left, followed by saunas. Ice room and cold showers in the middle, and a hot/cold walk through shower on the right. Amazing I was this close to the salt room and not fast asleep.

 

Steam room can get a little steamy. Hopefully in just one way....

Pretty cool that after midnight the dome looks like this, and the promenade is basically deserted. Never mind the fools on the bridge arguing who the captain is now with their captain hats

Absolutely fantastic review and photos, thank you so much. You have really captured the depth of your experience and it's an extremely useful read for all (especially those with upcoming cruises on Meraviglia!).

 

I can't quite work out what a 'Med bath' is though - I get steam room, I get sauna - but I've never heard of a 'Med bath.' Google doesn't help much either and I can't work it out from the photo.... I'm prepared to look foolish when I finally get it?! 🙂

Glad you enjoyed the review.  We certainly try to make it as entertaining and in depth as we can.  We always appreciate the reviews other members post so we try to contribute when we can.  

 

A Mediterranean bath is similar to sauna, but tends to be lower in temperature and humidity.  These particular ones have an overhead spray that occasionally sprays a light mist over the rocks and heating element with aromatic that is very reminiscent of the smells of the Med by MSC fragrance.  

 

Here is a description from an Italian hotel, Hotel Serena, which their page shows a very similar room in their spa.

 

What is a Mediterranean bath and what are its advantages? 

A Mediterranean bath is a hot and steamy room for bathing, similar to a caldarium, but with 50% less humidity. It promotes the elimination of toxins from the body and dilation of the bronchi and lungs, which will prove particularly beneficial for those with breathing problems, asthma or sinusitis. A Mediterranean bath will also stimulate the dilation of capillaries and will reactivate the circulation, especially in areas that are prone to water retention such as the legs, hips and buttocks.

 

 

Now I can't comment on the supposed health benefits, but it still is our favorite room, even over the salt room.

We had a butler named Jacques on one of our YC cruises - he was the very best  (out of 5 YC cruises that we've done).  I'm wondering if he is the same person you had.  If so, you were very lucky.  He's been mentioned on here by others, too, as outstanding.

I was just on the Seaview about 3 weeks ago and they do have the express elevators for Yacht  Club guests. They work the same way. If a YC guest calls it they over ride other guest calls. I noticed them when I was having dinner at Butchers Cut.

   Weren't you just on the Seaside Dec 8th sailing? I was on that sailing. I recently booked the eastbound transatlantic on the Meraviglia if you are going east bound. I started a roll call for that sailing.

Thank you for posting all the lovely pictures we too will be taking the Meraviglia on the TA in April 2020 in the Yacht Club.  It will be our first time on this ship.   

Question: are any of the pools heated? 

I really enjoyed all these pictures and comments from your cruise. I am also sailing on the Meraviglia on the TransAtlantic eastbound 2020. Unfortunately, I will be in an ADA inside cabin with the other poor folk, LOL. But, I'll bet my stateroom will be bigger than yours, even if it doesn't include YC service.  Seriously, I am having the YC experience on a short Divina cruise in Dec 2019 and really looking forward to it. Re: Express elevators....If you are paying 3 -4 times the cost of other cabins on the ship, you deserve the ability to hijack the elevator, just saying. Stp_mmh5 Thanks again for all the great info and photos. I'm still trying to figure out how you got that shower shot. Was someone standing on the sink?

Thanks for coming back to our thread and enjoying it! We aim to make sure everyone enjoys our writing and is drawn into our experience. WE love the Meraviglia! I'm trying to convince Shane to go on her again when she is in the Caribbean! We've already booked another YC Interior on the Seaview for this summer in the Med for our anniversary. We are super stoked!!

 

As for getting the shower pic, we have the new Google Pixel 3 phones that has a "Groupie" mode when it's in selfie mode, so we turned the camera to that and got the photo! 

**As for the "Express Elevators" we posted and you reposted above, those were placed at the Aft of the ship and were NOT exclusive to the YC passengers. This was placed as a "trial run" system on the back cabins by MSC as they were hoping it would cut down on wait times at the elevators. Any and all passengers could utilize those elevators. It should be known it didn't last long, only about a day or 2, before MSC had them removed and it resumed normal elevator services. I hope that helps clear up that confusion.
