I would mention that to MSC. They take pride in the Yacht Club product, and if they started to get enough reviews from YC passengers saying they had decided to eat in the buffet instead of the YC restaurant then they'd take action to address that. Because you're right, if the maitre d' knew that some of his guests were choosing to eat at the buffet instead of his restaurant I'd like to think that he would have been horrified and would want to take corrective action.

To talk about the deck chairs at the YC Pool Deck - my wife is a teacher, so we always cruise during the busy summer months (June or July) when there is a full passenger manifest. It is a surprise to hear that you had trouble finding three deck chairs together at times. In our past experiences with MSC Seaside & Divina, we never had that issue. Finding a table to eat over by the bar and grill is almost impossible on Seaside because I think there are only 3 or 4 tables available anyway. But we have always been able to find deck chairs even on sea days at 1:30 in the afternoon. The problem is that people need to stop trying to save chairs. If you're out sunbathing, swimming, whatever then by all means grab a chair. But when you leave for a spa appointment, or to go grab lunch at the restaurant, don't drape a towel over the chair in an attempt to save it for when you get back. That's just wrong. If people stop doing that, I think the problem would go away - in the YC at least. On the main pool deck - no chance.

You're right -- I should mention it to MSC. I was sent a post-cruise survey, but there were no questions about the YC specifically. That surprised me. Maybe I'll send a follow-up email.

You're 100% right about the chair situation. I think the fact that we had a lot of cloudy weather after the first sea day actually made the problem worse. People didn't want to give up their chairs in case the sun peeked out for an hour at some point! We actually lucked out and got one of the tables near the bar & grill a couple of times, but more often we ate at one of the tables on the port side, forward of the pool area. We never had a problem getting a table somewhere!

The Yacht Club is very receptive to requests BUT if a guest says nothing, the staff will assume that all is well. In our case, we told the staff which table we liked for breakfast and lunch (near the window) and which one we liked for dinner (overlooking the railing down to the lounge/piano) and those became "our" tables. We also had a preferred waiter (Dexter) who served us at both locations.

As far as "chair hogs", my experience was the opposite. Even without the cabana, there were plenty of loungers available. Perhaps the towels that were left on chairs were "cleaned up" by the staff a bit quicker on my sailing. Even the (lukewarm) hot tubs were usually available. There were 2 teen girls who spent a lot of time in one but the other was available.

We definitely should have spoken up, but I wish they had not created a situation where we felt the need to. I still say that they should hold back the tables that are clearly going to be unpopular until they have to seat them. It's easier to stomach getting a "bad" table when it's the only one available.

I didn't see staff on our sailing remove towels from a lounge chair once. In fact, a couple of times when it started to rain, they folded up the cushions, leaving the towels in place. We had pretty good luck with the hot tubs, too, although I agree that they could have been hotter!

This is very true.  The system tracks where you eat (and drink) according to your cruisecard activity;  while they may not approach you about this (on the basis that they're not going to query your reasons for doing so - you're perfectly entitled to only dine there if you so choose), they would be aware if, for example, you ordered drinks while dining in the buffet.

They would certainly do their utmost to rectify the situation if you have any issues with the YC restaurant.  When we were on Splendida last April, the menu placed in the Top Sail Lounge showed that the mixed grill from the Tex-Mex restaurant menu was on.  Now we love to see this being available, so we headed off to the restaurant (at the far end of the ship!) only to discover that the menu was different.  There was nothing else on that we fancied, so we got up to leave.  The asst m'D stopped us and asked what the problem was.

We told him that we were disappointed that the Tex-Mex wasn't on;  he said "There's no Tex-Mex anymore on this ship".  We said we knew that but that the item from the MENU was indicated on the menu in the TSL.  He contradicted us;  but I'd taken a photo of the menu beforehand so could prove it.  He immediately got on the phone (probably to the head butler) and chewed the  person out of it for the mistake.  He then went to great lengths to convince us to stay and said he would do his best to get us anything we wished off menu.  We chose steaks and he arranged that for us.  Believe me, he really pleaded with us to stay, despite us trying to assure him that it wasn't a problem and that we were more than happy to dine elsewhere.

Our biggest negative that was on your list was the Yacht Club wine list, with only mediocre quality selections available. We aren’t wine snobs but there is a big leap in quality from a $7.00 bottle to a $10-12 one.

Our work around was to stop at the wine bar outside of Yacht Club to pick up a couple of glasses of Oberon Cab and take it to the restaurant. Interested in how  you dealt with it.

On our first night on Splendida, I ordered my favourite included wine on the Deluxe package - Cicogna - only to be told by our waiter that the sommelier chooses 2 reds and 2 whites to be opened and that they would change the options each evening.  I was very unhappy with this (we were on a 28 night cruise).  So, we did the same as you ... picked up a couple of glasses in the wine bar (it was on the way to the restaurant, anyway) and brought them up to have them with our meal.  After the second night of us doing this, the sommelier approached us and asked why we were bringing wine in.  When we explained, he said that we could choose whatever wines we liked as long as they were included, and ensured we were looked after for the rest of the cruise.

Another incident was when I ordered a glass of champagne in TSL;  the bartender was new to YC and didn't know it was included.  We tried to convince him that it was;  a butler came over to see what was happening and told the bartender that it was, but another butler, who was also in the area, thought it wasn't and headed off for the head butler.  Eventually, it was agreed that Nicholas Feuillate was included (the barman then pointed out that it was "by the glass - not the bottle").  I told the sommelier about our experience later that evening;  every night after that, he brought me over a glass of NF as an aperitif.

It was clear to us that they really wanted all of the YC guests to dine in the restaurant as much as possible. We got a little bit of good-natured heat for eating at the Teppanyaki restaurant on night two! Your experience on Splendida is very interesting. Since you were convinced to stay, I hope the steaks were good!

Just want to say that you have provided a wealth of information on this board. Thank you!

Thank you to all who have contributed to this thread.  Your insight, comments and experiences are invaluable as we try to learn about this (new to us) product.

We have 3 cruises booked before the Seaside in October, and I can safely say we are both looking forward to the YC experience more than the others.

Again, thanks to all for sharing your wisdom.

We were onboard in October and November for 3 weeks and we saw couples waiting for these "more private tables" SO I guess to some, these are the best seats in the house.

Our second port was St. Thomas. This was the one stop where we had very favorable port times. We considered taking the ferry from Red Hook to St. John since we had so much time, but in the end we decided to stay on St. Thomas. We went to Secret Harbour for a couple of hours early in the day. The weather turned cloudy at about noon, and we decided to pack it in once it started to rain lightly. The beach and water were very pretty there, and it was relatively uncrowded. It was nice to go somewhere different as we've been to Magen's Bay several times.

Great review! One beach we really enjoyed in St. Thomas on Port stops has been Sapphire Beach. There's not much there other than a little bar with some food and recreational equipment rentals. But the snorkeling is great, the beach beautiful and with a tremendous view of many of the other Virgin Islands. The major con is no chairs (at least last time we were there) so you'll need to hang out on your towels. This was with NCL though and I'm not sure if MSC uses the same pier.

We'll keep Sapphire in mind for next time! It sounds like it has everything that's important to us in a beach.

I'm going to wrap up my "10 Worst" list now. I'm kind of regretting my format, as I don't like having a bunch of complaints clumped together! I'm thinking I should have alternated between my favorite and least favorite aspects of the cruise. In any case, I'll keep the details to a minimum, as it's really the first three on the list that will factor in to our decision about whether to sail with MSC again.

4. Layout of Ship

Compared to other large ships we've been on, we found the layout of Seaside to be choppy and somewhat confusing. We also felt that the ship could have benefited from some larger public spaces. A lot of the venues seemed small relative to the number of passengers on the ship. We were a little baffled by the Garage Club. There were rarely people in that space, and we it's not clear what the intent of it was. The arcade seemed like an afterthought -- not much to do there. And what is La Boheme? Was this intended to be a restaurant at one point? I think the thing we missed most vs. RCCL Oasis class is the spacious, open pool deck. The pool deck on Seaside felt chopped up and was so crowded the couple of times we walked through the area that we decided to avoid it.

5. Wine Selection in the YC

This has been discussed a bit already, but we were disappointed in the wine selection in the YC. DH and I are not wine aficionados by any means, but we do appreciate a nice glass of wine. My current "go to" is pinot noir, and the one offered in the YC (Mirassou ) was pretty bad. The third night we went to the restaurant, I decided to go with rose instead, and I was brought a glass of Beringer White Zinfandel. NOT the same thing. When I asked whether I could have the French rose on the menu in Topsail Lounge, I was told that the Beringer was the rose being offered in the restaurant. At that point I threw in the towel and switched to beer. Next time we'll know to get a glass at the bar outside the YC before going to dinner!

6. Elevators

Thankfully we're able bodied and were looking to add to our step counts, because the elevators were a big problem on this sailing. Most days, 3 of the 4 forward elevators on the starboard side were out of order. And for whatever reason, the priority service feature did not seem to work at that elevator bank. The few times we tried to take the elevator, we waited for a long time, only to find that the elevator was packed like a can of sardines when it finally arrived. It was a long walk from decks 4, 5, and 6 to deck 16, but at least we burned off some of the calories we consumed!

7. Hair Dryer in the Room

I'm not sure whether others have struggled with this, but the fact that the hair dryer was attached to the inside of one of the drawers made it very difficult to use. It didn't help that I'm fairly tall. This one is obviously not a big deal... I'll just bring mine from home next time.

8. The Beach Towel Situation

We had 3 beach towels in our room when we arrived, and we read that we should leave our used towels in the room and they'd be replaced each evening with new ones. This never happened for us. That wouldn't have been a problem, but most mornings there were no towels available on the pool deck when we got there. People watched vigilantly for the stash to be replenished, and then rushed over to grab a few. I'm not sure whether this is typical or was a result of the large number of passengers in the YC for our sailing. Again, not a big deal, just a small annoyance.

9. Paying for WiFi

It would be nice if WiFi were included for YC guests, even if it's just the standard package. RCCL suite guests each get free WiFi, BUT they don't get all of their drinks for free. If I had to choose, I'd go with free drinks every time. (It would be nice to get both, though!)

10. Movement of the Ship

I felt more movement on this sailing than on any other cruise we've taken. That may have been due in part to our location in the forward section of the ship. We typically stay just aft of midship, so we'd never had experience with this location. For most of the cruise the movement was manageable, but on the 6th night it bordered on unpleasant. We were rocking pretty hard from side to side, and not in a nice, rock-you-to-sleep sort of way! Lots of people, myself included, were bumping into walls. I'd love to hear others' experiences with movement on Seaside vs. other ships.

Honorable Mention: Thermal Area at the Spa

We visited the thermal area once and were not particularly impressed. It was very crowded, which I'm sure was due in part to the cloudy weather the day we went. As with other areas of the ship, it just didn't seem big enough for the number of people utilizing it. There was one room we really wanted to check out (I think it had heated loungers), but the same 6 people were camped out in there from the time we arrived until the time we left. One of the men inside was reading a book! It was kind of fun for one visit, but we didn't return.

Whew! The negative portion of the program is officially over. I'll post over the weekend with some final thoughts and, of course, I'm happy to answer any questions.

My mother & I sailed on Seaside 6/09/2018. The weather was fantastic that week and we were on deck 14 midship (Balcony room 14147). We commented all week that we weren't even aware we were moving! Because we were in a standard balcony with the general populace We also seldom went to the front of the ship, other than to the theater every evening. But again. I can't recall it rocking at all!

Interesting. I wonder if the seas are generally rougher this time of year or if it's just luck of the draw. I'd describe the ocean as a little choppy for most our sailing and a bit rough night 6. We had some cloudy and rainy weather as well.

Thank you for your review and comments. Was nice to relive the Seaside YC experience as we sailed on Seaside YC last April. We enjoyed our experience and to be totally honest my wife never left the YC area. I wandered the ship just to get a feel for it and spend sometime in Sports Lounge (fantastic), Casino, and Miami Pool area.  The big difference in our experience was quality of food and overall dining experience which was top notch each evening. Additionally the ambiance and relaxed atmosphere in Top Sail Lounge and Pool Grill area was amazing along with service by staff and Butlers. During the cruise my wife and I commented how quiet and uncrowded this area was??? Maybe we were lucky...but we never felt crowded on the Sun deck or Grill area.

When we cruised I read they were allowing other passengers (non YC) to purchase a day pass to enjoy YC amenities....This was supposedly limited. I believe the daily cost was in the range of $95/pp.  It did not appear to be a big issue on our cruise (newness??)....But perhaps the word has gotten out ...especially about YC area...and more non YC passengers are purchasing which could contribute to crowded conditions??  Just my 2 cents!

Very interesting. I remember reading about this here awhile back, but I had forgotten about it. If this was going on, we weren't aware of it. We did notice that YC staff were very vigilant in making sure no one came through the door between the Aurea area and the YC. The funny thing is that, for the most part, it didn't feel crowded on the sundeck since so many people left towels but didn't actually occupy their chairs! The only time it actually felt crowded is when it was sunny and most people were actually in their chairs (or walking around in search of chairs).

Time for final thoughts. Since I ended with my "10 Worst" list, I feel like I should make it clear first off that we very much enjoyed the cruise! The positives most definitely outweighed the negatives for us. Since there were a few substantial negatives, though, we would not rank this as our favorite cruise to date. That distinction (for a Caribbean cruise) goes to our 7-night Western Caribbean cruise on Allure of the Seas in an Aquatheater Suite. DH, DD, and I rated that one a 9.5. In comparison, we rated our cruise on the Seaside an 8.5. The primary goals of this cruise were to celebrate my 50th birthday in style and to get plenty of rest and relaxation, and our experience checked both of those boxes.

Will we book with MSC again? Yes, almost certainly, although it will depend on the circumstances. For instance, the next time DH and I cruise on our own, the YC will be at the top of our list. For a family vacation with DD, however, we will probably choose RCCL again. While our Seaside cruise was an excellent value and we loved the exclusivity of the yacht club, something was missing compared to other family vacations we've taken. We've talked about this a bit, and we agreed that it just wasn't as fun. We loved all the amenities and the pampering, but the cruise felt somewhat sedate. I think that was due in part to our decision to spend much of our time in the YC, but that's the whole point, right?

One other factor I've hinted at but haven't really discussed is the weather for our sailing. We had some sun here and there, but we also had a lot of clouds and a fair amount of rain. It was the worst weather we've ever had on a cruise. I've tried not to let the weather factor in to my overall opinion of the cruise, but it's been difficult. I think good weather makes any trip more enjoyable.

Thanks again to all who've read along and chimed in along the way. I've learned so much from this forum, and I hope I've provided information that some will find helpful.

Happy cruising, everyone!

Another great review LisaLisa. I’d like to add my two cents on a couple of your points.

4. Layout of the ship. You are 100% correct about the ship's layout. My wife and I feel the same way about Seaside and Divina. They are both very beautiful ships; especially Seaside with all the polished chrome and mirrors everywhere. But it is very choppy and confusing. I usually have my bearings by day 3 of our voyages on a new ship, but I was still running into dead-ends on day 6 of our first Seaside voyage. At times there seems to be no rhyme or reason why a particular corridor would end, forcing you to cross over from port side to starboard to continue your journey fore or aft. And sometimes you’d have to go to another deck to get from bow to stern. A little annoying at times, but it always provide a means to see areas of the ship that you may not have otherwise. I didn’t use the MSC for me app to help navigate around because I really try to unplug on our cruise vacations – I guess I’m a gluten for punishment, Lol. And "crowded on the main pool deck" is an understatement! I don’t think I’d ever cruise MSC outside of the Yacht Club (or Concierge aboard DCL).

6. Elevators. I had the priority elevators figured out from our times aboard Divina, so never had a problem with summoning one whenever we were trying to get to a show or one of the themed parties in the atrium. The trick is to NOT push any buttons when you’re calling for the elevator. Simply scan your wristband or cruise card and the elevator will come to you (unless there’s a YC passenger in the elevator already). Then when you board the elevator, scan your YC cruise card (or wristband) again and press your desired deck and it’ll take you straight to that deck. However, like you if we were only going 2 or 3 decks up or down we’d just take the stairs. I think I only used the priority feature twice in the entire week. Once after the muster drill on day-1; and another when we were running late for the Michael Jackson show.

We had the exact same experience trying to make our way around the ship! I do feel like we eventually saw pretty much every area, but it took some trial and error. The confusing layout was a minor annoyance, but the pool deck was a real bummer for us. We enjoyed the nearly empty pool in the YC, but we missed the festive feeling of the Allure's pool deck, along with the live music that could often be heard there. Nothing like listening to a steel drum band while you sip a frozen cocktail in the sun!

I only got the priority service to work successfully once. It was great to zip straight up from deck 6 to deck 16! Even the butlers seemed to have trouble with the feature on our sailing, which made our escorts off the ship a little more time consuming than they should have been -- especially when there were more people than would fit in one elevator.

Thanks for your contributions to this thread. I hope we're on the same sailing one day!

Hi Lisa, one more question. When the sofa was pulled out into the bed configuration, was it difficult to get in and out of the door to the veranda? We sailed in the Royal Suite with only two our three daughters the last cruise. All three of them will be in a deluxe suite in June, so I'm just curious.

We were able to open the balcony door and get outside pretty easily with the bed open. There was room at the end of the bed and a little bit of space between the bed and the balcony door.

LisaLisa, wondering if I should pack my own shampoo and conditioner...can you tell me what was supplied in your YC cabin please?

We were provided with small tubes of "Med by MSC" shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and body lotion. My husband used all of the products and liked them a lot. I'm picky, so I took shampoo, conditioner, and bar soap from home. I'm sorry I don't have any personal experience to relate, but FWIW I really liked the scent of the products!

Thanks for that info

I looked it up online after you posted what was provided and found this ☺️

"The MED by MSC fragrance itself is fresh and fruity, with warm notes of fig, almond and vetyver combining to create a welcoming and inviting ambiance and an enhanced sense of well-being and luxury".

I will I will bring my own just in case, haha!
