first time sailing Hawaii.  What side of the ship is best to be able to see the volcano as we sail past.  Its hard to see what route the ship does on my computer.  Right now we are on the port side.

The captain generally turns the ship around so all can get a good look at the volcano at night. I recommend a tour to Volcanoes National Park on Hawaii. Fascinating!

Yes the ship goes in a circle so both sides get to see it. Agree with the VNP, Hilo.

Unless conditions change again, there will be nothing to see at night during the sail-by.   The huge eruption that occurred last year has almost completely stopped and there is no lava currently flowing.    Sorry...it is spectacular at times, but Madam Pele seems to be resting up for awhile.    The park is still worth a visit from Hilo during a port stop.

They do stop and spin the ship around so everyone gets a view.  I've done the cruise 3 times and have yet to see anything other than a few red dots and once it rained so nothing to see at all that day.   Hopefully you get some better luck than we've had.
