rhsjr Posted February 21, 2019 #1 Share Posted February 21, 2019 Why do I think I'm right? I have $700 (USD) on-board credits. $300 each for myself and $300 for my wife plus $100 in shareholder credits, all USD thus totalling $700 USD. We are on a cruse out of Sydney and ALL charges against to cabin are in AUD (Austrailian), thus if I take out $20 at a slot machine it is AUD, but on my statement it shows as $700 - $20. Mixing currencies. It should show $700 - $15 ($20 AUD) OR about $980 - $20 all AUD. The guest service desk was totally lost. Please explain where I'm wrong (or right)
caribill Posted February 21, 2019 #2 Share Posted February 21, 2019 Are you sure that the $700, which would be US dollars if sailing elsewhere, is not really Australia dollars on an Australia based cruise? (Yes, I realize that you lose value that way, but I think that is how Princess does it. The $700 US OBC is not converted to the equivalent number of Australia $ like you would expect it to be.) The Captain's Circle host should be able to tell you if that $700 US has magically become Australia $.
dstables Posted February 21, 2019 #3 Share Posted February 21, 2019 (edited) All OBC will be in AUD except for shareholder OBC. Any OBC that came with your booking or from your TA is in AUD. Just sailed two cruises from Australia and all OBC was AUD. We are from North America and prepurchased casino credits that were in American Funds but once on board they were converted to AUD from American. So you are wrong. OBC is in AUD and anything charged to your ship board account will be AUD and same with the casino. Edited February 21, 2019 by dstables

I don't think he is wrong, I think he is saying that Princess are doing a 1 to 1 conversion of USD into AUD. The exchange rate is currently around AUD$1 = USD$0.70. This will get very embarrassing for Princess when the AUD drops to 50c.

OBCs that one receives now from sales does not specify a currency that the OBC is. This is something that Princess started about 18 months ago. Same with OBC from a FCD. These do not specify a currency for the OBC just an amount. So yes if you purchase a cruise in North America that comes with $150.00 OBC if you sail in Australia it will be in AUD. If you sail in the Caribbean then it will be in American dollars. This practice has been noted on CC for some time.
DrOfBytes Posted February 21, 2019 #6 Share Posted February 21, 2019 For our upcoming cruise out of New Zealand on Majestic Princess (booked in the US), all of our Princess OBC was converted at 1:1 to AUD, including FCD and shareholder benefit. I'm wondering if they will do the same to our TA OBC, which won't post to our account until the 2nd day of the cruise. Anybody have experience with this? Rare azbirdmom Posted February 21, 2019 #7 Share Posted February 21, 2019 For our upcoming cruise from Sydney, all OBC is in AUD including shareholder. So the OBC definitely is devalued compared to all other cruises that use USD.
Geoffa30 Posted February 21, 2019 #8 Share Posted February 21, 2019 We looked to buy OBC for use on board our upcoming Majestic Princess cruise. Usually £75 buys US$100. On this Australian cruise it’s AUD$100. Basically a rip off. We chose not to buy any. For reference £1 currently equals around US$1.28 and AUD$1.78. Based on our experience the TA OBC does get converted using typical exchange rates and not on a 1:1 basis as with the Princess OBC. We cruised on the Sun Princess Sydney to Fiji and return using a big box TA here in the US.
