Gift card for excursions pre cruise

Can you use AARP Carnival gift cards to pre-purchase shore excursions from the website? If so, online or do you need to call? I know gift card payments are usually refunded in gift cards and is that the case if you can pre purchase and then once on board need to cancel? Wondering because it would tie up your funds if need to wait for refund gift card to be mailed.

Third question, the excursion could be canceled on board.  I don't know if the refund would be in the form of a gift card or OBC.

We had an excursion cancelled during a cruise last year, we had paid with GC's and the refund came to us as OBC. We had a credit balance at the end of the cruise and we were mailed a check about a week afterward.

Yes, thank you both for good info. Now I can order more gift cards and not have to wait till onboard and hope the excursions we want are not full.
