Rare BirdTravels Posted April 17, 2019 #1 Share Posted April 17, 2019 Exercise increased caution in The Bahamas due to crime. Violent crime, such as burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assault, occurs even during the day and in tourist areas. Although the family islands are not crime-free, the vast majority of crime occurs on New Providence and Grand Bahama islands. U.S. government personnel are not permitted to visit the area known by many visitors as the Sand Trap area in Nassau due to crime. Activities involving commercial recreational watercraft, including water tours, are not consistently regulated. Watercraft are often not maintained, and many companies do not have safety certifications to operate in The Bahamas. Jet-ski operators have been known to commit sexual assaults against tourists. As a result, U.S. government personnel are not permitted to use jet-ski rentals on New Providence and Paradise Islands. If you decide to travel to The Bahamas: Exercise caution in the area known as "Over the Hill" (south of Shirley Street) and the Fish Fry at Arawak Cay in Nassau, especially at night. Do not answer your door at your hotel/residence unless you know who it is. Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.

Rare Peachypooh Posted April 17, 2019 #3 Share Posted April 17, 2019 I am assuming the private islands of the different cruise lines are basically safe since they were not mentioned. Of course petty theft can happen anywhere.
DKane Posted April 17, 2019 #4 Share Posted April 17, 2019 This advisory goes out every year it seems right before the high season. We just returned from Nassau and if you stay in areas that are full of tourists you'll be okay. Just don't go venturing out by yourself at night. Stay where the crowds are.
Rare Newleno Posted April 17, 2019 #5 Share Posted April 17, 2019 (edited) We are going to Nassau in a few days, we dont bother getting off the ship, nice views from the ship (until some other big sucker ship parks right next to you) Private islands that cruiselines take you to are great and safe, I would like for cruises to have overnights at the private islands and drop all the islands that are crime ridden. (Bermuda is safe, Aruba very safe, Barbados kind of safe, cant think of any other safe islands) Edited April 17, 2019 by Newleno
rustyroo Posted April 17, 2019 #6 Share Posted April 17, 2019 I've asked this before but is the walk to the British colonial Hilton safe?

I am conservative with safety. Edited April 17, 2019 by Newleno
YVRBassElectric Posted April 17, 2019 #8 Share Posted April 17, 2019 I felt completely safe in Nassau, I don't wear expensive jewels or flash money around and we stayed in the touristy areas. Precautions I take wherever I travel. I am sad the NCL opened Harvest Cay - I really enjoyed Belize City
