Demographic/entertainment

Hello all, we are a couple in our mid 50's and have sailed on Celebrity mostly.  We are looking to try a more upscale line.  Have looked into Viking Ocean but based on the entertainment (Rat Pack Tribute??), feedback from a friend who has sailed with them (ship was basically shut down at 11 pm) and reading the CC board seems we don't fit there.  Not party animals here but do like to stay out late some nights, dance, hang out and have a drink.  Just wondering what the night life and entertainment is like on Seabourne?

It varies by itinerary, I've found.  I've been on some sailings where the ship is pretty quiet after 11 pm.  I've been on others where the Club and/or Observation Bar were still extremely lively at midnight.  Often the night before a sea day will have folks up much later while the evening before a major port or the evening of an overnight is quieter.

My husband and I are in our late 40s and we are definitely not the last ones up on the ship... but we've never found it to be boring after dinner or after a show.

I'm glad Jenidallas posted on this topic.  We are older than Jeni and her husband (in our late 60s now).  We usually go to the show  after dinner(in the theater) and then back to our suite to bed.  I hate to admit this, but it is true.  I think what Jeni says about what the next day holds is so true.  In May we will be on the Sojourn on a repositioning cruise (Kobe to Vancouver) and every intention of being in the Club and out and about much later than usual. since there are so many days at sea.

We've only been on one Seabourn, and I'm sure it does vary from itinerary to itinerary, and by Cruise Director.  Ours last fall was quite lively I think (we tend to retire early but the nightclub was going full-swing I believe).  Ross, the cruise director seems like a real party animal and made sure there was that kind of vibe in The Club at night.

Really depends on the demographic and itinerary of each cruise, no two are ever the same. It is a bit like pot luck, but cruising the med in july, aug, younger age range, are more lively than in sept, oct, we have found anyway. Plus the Caribbean can be more lively too.

Thanks, as long as there is somewhere to go/hang out until a reasonably late hour that's the first step.  Do they have DJ music or just live?  (prefer DJ over ship bands).

Live music and often very good.  We will admit to being the last ones in the Club as they were closing up one night on our last cruise ...  I have no idea what time this was (very late) but it was a sea day the next day - that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

They have also within the last couple of years added in an automated jukebox system that will allow a staff member to switch on programmed music.  While not a DJ, I have seen this used when the tempo is up but it’s time for a band break.  (It’s a small video system located on the wall between the casino entry and the left of the Club stage.)

We found that on the shorter cruises 14n or less and in the Caribbean to be very much a livelier younger crowd.

That said we were out to 1.30am on the Odyssey in the Caribbean and one of the other party animals with us was a 93 yo Jewish Lady from New York who drank and sang like a trooper . You never can tell !

Repositioning cruises , Unusual/Unique /Colder Venues or longer than 14n tend to attract an older demographic as a generalization .

Don’t judge by age.  We are in our early 60s, my mom in her late 80s.  She closes down the place - as she has for the past 20 years when she used to travel on SB with us.  She found SB too dull for her, and has been on Crystal for the past several years where she finds more lively post-dinner cruisers.  Age is just a number, and not always indicative of late nite partiers.  I could never keep up with my mom, who was always in the gym before I got up!!!!!!

We are in our 60s, but we are night owls and do not go to sleep before midnight, regardless of the itinerary.  So we seek some fun and are in the Observation Bar, the Club, or the Casino after the show.  On some nights it's quiet, but there are others when folks are dancing and drinking, gambling, and sinning.  And we always find someone to hang around with.  A very friendly crowd.  Seabourn is not a line for the very young, but it is not completely dead after 10:00 like our recent experiences on Cunard's Queen Victoria, HAL's Noordam, or reaching back, on Oceania.  So the bottom line for me, it's a mixed bag, some fun but not wild and crazy.

My goodness, I hope that there is not too much “sinning” 🙄going on, with those CCTV cameras around.😳

Perhaps I should search on YouTube for videos of “sinning”on Seabourn ships.🙄😀🤣

The sinning goes hand-in-hand with the gambling.  No good will come from that!  But nevertheless that is where you will find me!

I just came back from my first Crystal cruise and have to say they have wonderful "ambassadors" to dance with solo ladies...or those with husbands with two left feet.  They were fun and added a spark to the night life.  Are there any on Seabourn?

No ambassadors or escorts on Seabourn.  And there are few opportunities for ballroom dancing.  Lots of opportunities to dance, just not ballroom.

You sound fun.  I’ve always been an early to bed person - even in my 20s, I’d be half asleep going to discos at 11 PM.  On SB, we have on occasion managed to stay up late when there were partiers in the casino and we’d be nearby cheering them on and drinking.  Best thing about SB is that it is what you make of it, and can usually find like-minded (fun) people.  If we ever sail with you, we will keep you company - at least once. 🙂

SB does not have dancing partners, as does Crystal.  Before my widowed mom met her fellow friend 9 years ago, she travelled sole or with a friend and chose Crystal because it had gentlemen hosts with whom to dance.  But on SB, you can always find someone or a couple to dance with.

It's a deal!  We will be back to Seabourn, our favorite line, when we find the right itinerary.  We usually do crossings, and Seabourn is not great for that.  But maybe a World Cruise when we strike it rich?

You’re on.  By the way, you mention a transatlantic.  We’ve not done that, but i do want to do that.  Why is SB not great for that?  Drinking, trivia, and — maybe — late night dancing in the casino 🙂

Hobar,

Our first date was on the Staten Island Ferry in 1970.  I watched the Verrazano Bridge being built from Seth Low Jr HS from a small island off the East coast of The United States, ----- Brooklyn.

We are booked on our third Seabourn TA next April, 2020 from Miami to Barcelona. We plan to stay the week afterwards in Rioja at B&B's, hotels, and visiting wineries.🍷

We will stay up late with you. We have danced in the Club, sometimes even together.

I have been on the winning trivia team three times. Peter is retired from trivia 🤩.  After the last TA, we had to buy a suitcase in Lisbon to take home all the loot from deck games and Trivia.

Look into this cruise and join us!

We did a 37n from Athens to Singapore and what was really interesting is when we hit the halfway mark in Dubai and lot of people left and a new lot came on . The new lot were not as interested in staying up late as the last lot and even the crew commented on the change . Ultimately it really can be hit or miss with the crowd you have on board but we always have a great time and really thats the whole point of travelling. Having fun , eating and drinking good food and booze and meeting new and interesting people .

OMG Ann & Peter.   How funny!  I am a Brooklyn girl.  I know Seth Low JHS.  I grew up in Mill Basin, and I too remember the VB being built.  (I ran 6 NYC marathons starting on that bridge.). But here’s the best part of your post - we are going to Saratoga this summer!!!!  Staying at the Inn, and have dinner reservations at Osteria Danny on July 30th.

I love your comment that you have danced in the Club “sometimes even together.”

I am impressed that you won Trivia.  My husband is the trivia king on our cruises.  (I got an umbrella - not useful in Arizona - and a bear, which i love.)  Will you be around to meet us for a drink at Osteria Danny?? It’s my husband’s birthday.  No better way to celebrate than with strangers.

Looking at a TA for next year, but I want to start from Portugal.  But we’ll talk.

The problem with Seabourn's crossings is that they generally begin or end in Barbados, an island that is not that easy to fly in or out of.  One would have to pass through Miami (or somewhere else), making the flight combination complicated, long, and stressful.  Kind of defeats the purpose of taking a transatlantic crossing to avoid long and stressful air travel.  Ships that begin or end in New York or Florida work for us.  But I would dearly love to cross on Seabourn.  Maybe someday.

  • 2 weeks later...

We are a couple in our 40's [were, I just turned 50], and have really enjoyed Seabourn transatlantics. They guests are a bit younger, and since most days are sea days, people tend to stay up later. We have enjoyed the after-dinner/show energy. We are on the Odyssey in November doing the Lisbon to St Martin crossing.
