Anyone sailed out of Civitavecchia recently?

We'll be sailing out of Rome for the first time this July (on HAL Koningsdam) after spending a few days in Rome. Can anyone advise on best times to drive from Rome (on a Monday) to Civitavecchia in light of usual traffic? We'll check out of our hotel by 11am so we were thinking of heading over at around that time. Anything special/unusual about embarking at this port that you wish you had known in advance? Thanks so much 😀

Are you driving a rental car to Civitavecchia yourselves or taking a transfer?

A private transfer is about 75 minutes and a shared shuttle could take up to 2 hours depending on if you are first pick up or last!

A private transfer will take you directly to the specific terminal being used by Koningsdam that day.  The terminals vary and are a long walk (or shuttle bus drive) from the port gates.

Suggest you purchase water, wine and sodas on your last evening in Rome as there are no shops/markets close to the terminal n Civitavecchia.

Thank you so much for the advice. Planning to set up a private transfer with Stefano’s Rome Cabs based on the positive reviews here and it’s more reasonably priced than the company the hotel uses. There are four of us with one checked suitcase each so I think the private transfer in a van seems like a good option.  And that way we can also avoid the long walk that you alerted us to. The hotel concierge suggested we leave at 9am but I’m thinking that may be too early as I’m assuming the earliest boarding could start is 11am. We’re staying in a Neptune Suite so maybe there will be a shorter line for suite check in. Either way I’m thinking departing Rome around 10am might make more sense. What do you think?

10 am is what we do! Stefano's driver will be waiting for you!  They are our drivers of choice.

The drive to Civitavecchia is unremarkably bland.

Highly recommended by us :).  Another nice thing about Rome Cabs is that their driver should be able to deliver you right to the pier.

The key here is to start with the end in mind (per Steven Covey, many years ago).

All you need to do is decide what time you want to be at the ship, then share that with your car service company.  They are the experts on the roads, traffic, and any road works in the area and they will tell you what time they need to pick you up in order to deliver you to the ship at the time you want.

There's no need for you to do the work for them, rely on their expertise and just make your needs known to them.
