Rare TiogaCruiser Posted May 22, 2019 #1 Share Posted May 22, 2019 During our stay in Amsterdam we are planning on taking the train from Amsterdam Centaal Station to Zaanse Schans (roundtrip) one day, and to Muiderslot Castle (roundtrip) on another day. We do not have the chip and pin credit cards. If I understand correctly, we can buy a single use RETURN ticket for each fare (by paying a 1Euro fee for the card + the fare) or a refillable card for 7 euros + fares). We are not going to be using it enough to justify buying a refillable card, so we want the single use card, correct? If so, to cut down on waiting in ticket lines for train tickets, can we pre-purchase single round trip tickets for the dates we want (2 trips on different days) at Schipol before we head into town, or should we just deal with line crowding at Centraal Station? Or is there a better place or way to get the tickets? ( After reading many of the benefits of the bundled Tourist cards (e.g. iAmsterdam) that include museums + public transportation, none of them seem to be a good deal for what we are planning to do, so we are planning on going "a la carte." We are only in town for 2 1/2 days and have other transportation planned from AMS.)

If unsure, at Schiphol Tourist information (Or Amsterdam Central Station) they will be glad to assist you. Outside (in front townside) Amsterdam Central Station is a local transportation (GVB) information center. During your trip bus- or tramdrivers will do their utmost to help you. (Or the police in the Netherlands, their helpfulness differs from policemen in many other countries.) I really hop you will enjoy your 2 1/2 days in Holland. And the cruise of course. Ine Posted May 24, 2019 #5 Share Posted May 24, 2019 Donot buy the OV chipcard if you donot plan to use it not that much. If using a train you need to have at least E. 20,- per card on it, plus of course the card itself. Getting refund of unused money is a bit complicated For buses and trams that isnot needed. In your casebetter buy tickets each time you travel. Only on traintickets you can buy returntickets, valid only for that day. Buses have only single tickets. Zaanse Schans as well as Muiderslot are easy to do by bus. All details re public transport to and from, times, fares etc. are easy to check on: https://9292.nl/en
Rare TiogaCruiser Posted May 24, 2019 Author #6 Share Posted May 24, 2019 Would there be an advantage to taking the bus over the train to Muiderslot and ZS? I think DH thinks the train is easier and faster??? (He also likes trains😁)

But you need to walk about 10 minutes from station Koog Zaanse Schans to the Schans. However walking you will pass the bridge with the best view over the Schans. Bus from Amsterdam stops more or less at the entrance. To get to Muiderslot you take the train either to Weesp and continue by bus from there, or train to Naarden Bussum and bus from there. For details chck the 9292 website I gave.

Your comment bolder confirmed we will do the train to Zaan Schans.😄 I’ll look at the bus route- maybe we’ll end up doing that for Muiderslot. I wish we would be there earlier so we could go by ferry. Ine Posted May 25, 2019 #9 Share Posted May 25, 2019 From Centraal Station it will be the 4th stop. More about Zaanse Schans here: https://www.dezaanseschans.nl/en/ Inside the building where they explain how cheese is made you can also taste and buy some great cheeses! In another building you can watch how klompen (clogs) are made. I always bring friends to Zaanse Schans and they love it. During weekends it can be busy! We do not have the chip and pin credit card Doesn't matter if you do. The ticket machines accept only bank cards from Netherland banks. Luckily, because the locals use the machines, the queue at the ticket offices are short. Tickets are more expensive from the ticket offices than the machines 😞
