We just returned from a Memorial Day service that pointed out exactly this, and also differentiated today from Armed Services Day. Armed Services and Veterans Days are worthwhile in their own right, but are not the same as Memorial Day, which, unfortunately, has become known as the national holiday of BBQs and the unofficial first day of summer.

In Syracuse, NY at the NYS Fairgrounds, .  it is tradition the night before Memorial Day  to have a Watchfire. I am including  pictures of the 2019 version that happened last night. They usually draw 20,000+ people .
