Trish50 Posted June 23, 2019 #1 Share Posted June 23, 2019 We have booked our first cruise on the Celebration for June 2020. We don’t really do dressing up and wondered if shorts etc are allowed in the main buffet restaurant in the evening.
Pensioncruiser Posted June 23, 2019 #2 Share Posted June 23, 2019 Yes they are but not in the MDR.
davecttr Posted June 23, 2019 #3 Share Posted June 23, 2019 Yes, shorts are allowed in the buffet restaurant, even in the evenings. This is from the Marella site "Then you’ve got Smart, which is when you’ll need to dress up a bit. Put your sports or swimwear away, and opt for trousers, smart tailored shorts or a skirt or dress, a shirt or polo shirt and smart shoes, so no trainers or flip flops. If you want to add a jacket or tie, that’s up to you" This applies to the main waiter service dining room too!!. It might vary on Captains night
Vitalsign Posted June 23, 2019 #4 Share Posted June 23, 2019 But not casual shorts and t shirts in the main dining room (MDR) only the Lido buffet

Its up to the individual how they dress and what they feel comfortable in but you may find you feel a bit out of place dressed in shorts and t-shirts in the evening. we found that the majority of passengers make the effort to smarten up in the evenings chino and collared t-shirts/shirts for the men and ladies in slacks and smart tops minimum but a lot had nice frocks on too. Pensioncruiser Posted June 24, 2019 #6 Share Posted June 24, 2019 We found similar particularly on the older ships. 😊
Rare dronnygirl Posted June 24, 2019 #7 Share Posted June 24, 2019 Personally that's one of the reasons we like cruising, dressing up in the evenings as we don't get much opportunity at home. Makes it more special.
pgilc1 Posted June 24, 2019 #8 Share Posted June 24, 2019 Buffet restaurants, as has been said, shorts not a problem, but not the MDR. I generally went down to the MDR in a decent pair of jeans, a shirt and a pair of casual shoes. Didnt feel out of place. I think shorts and a t shirt wouldnt be appropriate in there, but otherwise fine.

ormy Posted June 26, 2019 #11 Share Posted June 26, 2019 Just returned from Explorer2 - there appeared to be no restrictions on what you wear. denim shorts, trainers etc allowed in MDR, we have to say that if that attire is preferred to be worn then go to the Market Place (Buffet) On Dress to Impress night, I wore a Tuxedo and my wife an evening dress, and next to us was a man in denim shorts and trainers, not what I expected. We are not at all upper class, but expect sensible dress to be worn in the MDR. It does rather lower the standards in that dining room. We did though see a man refused entry wearing shorts and sandals.
Pensioncruiser Posted June 26, 2019 #12 Share Posted June 26, 2019 Must agree with you ormy we always go formal on the DTI/Captains night and smart for other nights for us it's an important part of the cruise, like yourself we have seen a male passenger turned away because of sandles, on Discovery, I thought this was a bit harsh as he was smartly dressed but the dress code is posted each night outside the MDR. Vitalsign Posted June 26, 2019 #13 Share Posted June 26, 2019 We don't use the MDR regularly but still dress smartly every night and even more so for Dress to Impress/Captains night although we use the buffet as it's so busy in the MDR I don't particularly like to see people dressed in vests, shorts and flip flops at dinner in the buffet especially ones with boobs overflowing, builders bum and enormous bellies it puts you off your food!! I do hope they keep to the dress code we're all used to otherwise it'll end up like a holiday camp
Hookedoncruising! Posted June 27, 2019 #14 Share Posted June 27, 2019 Last year on Discovery 2 we saw people walking into Surf & Turf in shorts t- shirts and flip flops!😵 Absolutely out of order that we are paying extra to sit in a restaurant for a different atmosphere/ ambience and different class of food and see people being allowed in that can't be bothered to make an effort 😠 We are not snobs by any stretch of the imagination, but this is just wrong. We do not think this attire should even be allowed in the main dining room far less the a la carte's. We enjoy dressing for the dinners in MDR and consider it an enjoyable part of our holiday,as we do not do this so much at home. If people want to dress so casual then why not just stick to the buffet? Marella to blame though for not monitoring dress code... and also not monitoring hand sanitizing. Hand sanitizing should be compulsory for entry to any restaurant! Rant over... 😝😝
Vitalsign Posted June 27, 2019 #15 Share Posted June 27, 2019 Couldn't agree more Can't believe they dressed like that for the a la carte restaurant and weren't asked to change Don't people read the dress code in the Cruise News?
Rare Jim The Scot Posted June 28, 2019 #16 Share Posted June 28, 2019 Met numerous people who dont even read the cruise news. jack10952 Posted June 30, 2019 #19 Share Posted June 30, 2019 I agree with some comments on here. Marella need to enforce the dress codes. Especially for the main restaurant on dress to impress night and the paid speciality restaurants every night. I’m not saying dinner jackets etc but long trousers 100%. This information should be included in the booking pack / email along with what night is going to be the Dress to Impress. The cruise news advertised this on second page in small paragraph and that’s the only mention I seen of it on the Discovery
Pensioncruiser Posted June 30, 2019 #20 Share Posted June 30, 2019 The dress code is posted every night, it's just behind the girls on the entrance to the MDR.
Rare dronnygirl Posted June 30, 2019 #21 Share Posted June 30, 2019 Unfortunately it seems to be down to the person taking bookings for the MDR or the head waiter to enforce the dress code. They need to be trained to turn people away if necessary. Part of our reason for cruising is getting dressed up and socialising in the evenings. Pensioncruiser Posted July 1, 2019 #22 Share Posted July 1, 2019 Could I possibly suggest that we all contact Tui after travel and pass on our feelings to them. I have but don't hold out much hope for any action. 🤞

Vitalsign Posted July 7, 2019 #25 Share Posted July 7, 2019 Just returned from Discovery and it quite clearly states in the Cruise News and outside 47 and 47 gallery what the dress code is and this includes tailored shorts but must be worn with a collared shirt and full shoes Never saw anyone flouting the rules thankfully and people were well dressed in the main In Islands thankfully
