We are on the Edge in August and were looking at the On Your Own Tour.  It states that you meet at the Melina Mercouri statue near the Acropolis.  How do we get there?  And why pay for a transfer to get us to the Acropolis if we have to get there on our own?  I don't understand, anyone else done this?

Just for your consideration....We just returned from a port stop in Athens and did a full day tour with PK Travel...you might want to compare that to what you're considering doing. We paid 65 Euros pp for a small private group tour we booked with some from our roll call. I couldn't recommend this company more !!

The full name of the excursion is "Athens on Your Own Transfer".  It will include the transfer.  It doesn't really say you will "meet" at the statue.  They are essentially saying that they will get you to the Melina Merouri statue and will like pick you up nearby there.  Usually on these "On Your Own" excursions, there will be an employee who rides the bus to and from the destination with you.  They often will walk you from the bus to an easy-to-find location that will serve as your starting point and stopping point of your day (such at the Melina Mercouri statue).  At the end of the day, that employee will likely meet you all at the same statue and then escort the group back to your bus.

Alternatively,  depending how comfortable you are doing your own thing, there is the 843 bus which runs from the cruise ports to the metro station. You can buy a 24hr ticket which covers buses and metro for about 3 euros I think. Last time we did this there was a small kiosk in the port that sold the tickets. The Athens metro is a great way to get from Piraeus to Athens and to get around when there if you do your research beforehand.
