Jasonmom Posted August 10, 2019 #1 Share Posted August 10, 2019 Anyone know how much a cab is to and back from Mahahual? Thinking of going to Tropicana. Thanks in advance for any information
Rare crewsweeper Posted August 10, 2019 #2 Share Posted August 10, 2019 I believe it's now $8 per taxi each way. Tram from port is $ 8 per person now too. Recent travelers, please correct. And it's Tropicante not Tropicana. Be sure you go to the white faced building with Tropicante on it. Ignore anyone pointing to loungers and saying these are Tropicante's. Ask for Steve, Carolina or Jorge. They will take care of you. If for some reason they are closed ( can happen in slow season with 1 ship in), go to Krazy Lobster just a few steps up the malecon. Can't miss their banner.
gatour Posted August 10, 2019 #3 Share Posted August 10, 2019 Based on recommendations here, yesterday I reached out to Tropicante about reserving loungers. Steve responded today. Besides confirming my "reservation". He talked about transportation. For a taxi it is $8 for up to 4 people. He didn't mention the price for the shuttles, however he recommended the taxi as the go to option, as it will take you directly to Tropicante. The shuttles, may make it a bit more difficult to find Tropicante. crewsweeper, thanks for the alternative suggestion. The ship we are taking wasn't originally stopping at Costa Maya. It was supposed to be a Cuba cruise. It will be the only ship in port, so originally no ships were scheduled to be in port on the day we docking. While Steve didn't mention about the potential Tropicante will be closed, I can understand if they are, so you alternate suggestion will be in my notes. JohninDC Posted August 11, 2019 #4 Share Posted August 11, 2019 $8 each way when we were there in February. Tropicante was excellent!

One one thing to note- beach clubs in Costa Maya are generally VERY close together especially around the center area of malecon. They may be literally separated by a rope or change of loungers, color etc. El Faro is immediately to the right of Tropicante (looking at the water). Suggest you check out the T-shirt logo of your sever, and ask for a menu and take photo before you order - so again you can check you are at the right place and have prices and descriptions to hand. Rare crewsweeper Posted August 11, 2019 #7 Share Posted August 11, 2019 If Steve took your reservation, they'll be open. Houndfish Posted August 23, 2019 #8 Share Posted August 23, 2019 Are taxis easy to get for the return trip to the port?

If you are just going to the malecon taxis are easy to get. It is about a 5-10 minute drive. Most bars will escort or call for a taxi but you have to walk over a street from the malecon as that is pedestrian only.
Houndfish Posted August 23, 2019 #10 Share Posted August 23, 2019 are there return taxis on the back street frequently or could there be a long wait?

There is a taxi waiting area a block behind Tropicante and another up by the lighthouse. There may be more but these are the two we use. We have never had to wait more than a few minutes but we give ourselves plenty of time. Not sure how it gets if everyone is rushing at last minute. shellunderwater Posted September 8, 2019 #12 Share Posted September 8, 2019 On August 30, $8 each way for two people. To get out of the port (the hard part), go to the left in the port area, way past the pools, walk through the bar if you need to. Past the dolphins. Then there is an asile you take that leads to the port entry. Go out onto the street and to the line of yellow taxis on the street.

Yes, getting out to the tram and then to the taxi stand was definitely the hard part. Between the above, and some other postings, I was able make way. We took the tram outbound and a taxi back. Next time, we would take a taxi both ways. The tram was much slower than the taxi. Just walk past the tram pick up towards the gates, once pass the gate, there will be a line of taxis. In the port area, there is hardly any signage.
