knightclan Posted August 12, 2019 #1 Share Posted August 12, 2019 For those of you who have been in Japan before, what do you suggest about getting yen before the cruise and how much are you able to use American dollars?
Rare Keith1010 Posted August 25, 2019 #2 Share Posted August 25, 2019 You could get it at your home bank but you will pay more. Another option is to use ATM's when you arrive to Japan. Keith
Donald Posted August 29, 2019 #3 Share Posted August 29, 2019 American Dollars are universally NOT accepted in Japan. Note that if you are exchanging American dollars for Yen in Japan, they will not accept any currency that is torn, dirty, written on, or otherwise damaged. Rare Miaminice Posted August 29, 2019 #4 Share Posted August 29, 2019 As mentioned above USD are not accepted in Japan. On our two trips to Japan we withdrew money as we needed from ATMs. We have a credit card not charging any foreign currency or ATM fees. You will find a 7eleven or Lawson store at every second corner and they have ATMs - safe and easy. The charge of the ATMs itself is very reasonable and depends on the amount - in April it was 108 JPY per 10.000 JPY so just about 1 USD.
loeb Posted August 29, 2019 #5 Share Posted August 29, 2019 do a search on youtube on how to use an ATM in Japan including where they are located at Narita and Haneda. As mentioned 7 / 11 stores have ATM's , here is a video on how to use them
Expat Cruise Posted August 31, 2019 #6 Share Posted August 31, 2019 Was just in Japan, only for a half of day, but had no issues. Lots of ATM machines so could get yen and everyplace seemed to be happy with credit cards. I would not exchanged at a US bank as the rate will be poor.
