One way taxi to Pompeii?

I’ve seen lots of information about round trip taxis from Naples to Pompeii, but does anyone know if doing a one way trip is possible and the associated cost? We’re entertaining the idea of taking a taxi to Pompeii, taking the train to Sorrento afterward, and then taking a ferry back to Naples from Sorrento. I know there is a train and shuttle option, but we like the idea of traveling a little bit more comfortably for the first leg of the trip and being able to get to Pompeii right when it opens. We’ve looked at shore excursions but really don’t want to be “herded” and rushed through Pompeii so think doing it independently may be the best option.

It's certainly possible to take a taxi one way, though every single taxi driver you approach will try and talk you into a round trip.  It takes some perseverance on your part.

There is no one-way fixed fare to Pompei so you would be on meter, and all out-of-town fares are double what the meter says (since you're also paying for the driver to go back to Naples).

So, using the fare chart we can estimate the total as follows:

  3,50 euro starting fare

52,00 euro travel fare (approximately 25 km times .05 cents per meter, times two)

Therefore I would expect to pay around 55 euro for the one way trip.

Taxi fare information can be downloaded from the city's web site here: http://www.comune.napoli.it/flex/cm/pages/ServeBLOB.php/L/IT/IDPagina/1193

Make sure you are very clear before you get in the taxi.  Also be prepared for insane amounts of traffic. Another option is a taxi to the train station.  Much less traffic but the train can be very crowded.  There are also tour buses that leave from the port.

That one way fare sounds very reasonable for a taxi;  Pompeii is not around the corner, as euro cruiser has pointed out. Of course, on the meter you should be prepared for the cost to increase if there is a lot of traffic. And there can be a LOT of vehicular traffic in and around Naples.

You probably could get there faster (and certainly before the site opens) by train. The trains from Naples to Pompeii are not as crowded in the early mornings as most commuters are traveling in the opposite direction.

I personally find the bus the most comfortable of the public transportation options.  The depot is close to the cruise port (550 meters/one-third of a mile on foot) and there's a ticket office right there, so it couldn't be easier.  There's a bus at 7:30 Monday - Friday (except in July) that gets you to Pompei at 8:15, well before the ruins open at 9 AM.
