I think DuVaul is on every email talking about your upcoming cruise. Same with Commodore Nash. I have got those emails and DuVaul wasn’t my Cruise Director and Commodore Nash wasn’t the Captain.

They used to prepare the mass emails with the actual crew members who were in the positions on your ship.

This Captain is a keeper. He is very hands on and extremely engaging with the passengers including taking part in the game shows. His evening chats are both informative and funny.

I agree, based on what I've seen. Captain Arrigo seemed like the person that Princess was hoping could become their "super captain" like the way Captain Kate has become for Celebrity. Unfortunately, the recent gimmicky Love Boat reality TV competition show (that he starred in) flopped horribly in the States, so.....nada. But he will be moving onto the Sun Princess next year, so we'll see if they do big him up once again or not. Anyways, it's always surprised me how despite Princess deriving so much of its branding from The Love Boat, it has never done enough to grow their captains' audiences like they do on Celebrity. But, not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

I have a quick question from the "cheap seats."   I understand the reason for posting the lists (presumably some Cruise Directors are better than others, etc.), but are there any CDs or Captains that people need to watch out for?  

 

I consider myself as new to cruising (only gone twice -- Royal Caribbean and Carnival), so thanks for your patience.  Also, I'd be interested to hear how Princess stacks up against RCCL, Carnival, Norwegian, etc.

Some Cruise Directors can really have a strong influence on the passenger experience. They also have a very strong influence on the attitude of the Assistant Cruise Directors who handle most of the day to day passenger interactions. I've seen a pretty much worthless CD who had an Assistant CD who was rude, unprofessional, and sometimes downright hostile to the passengers. It made for an uncomfortable atmosphere on the ship. Thankfully I "think" both of them went away during the shutdown. If I found myself on a long cruise with that particular Assistant CD I would likely be arrested for throwing him overboard which would definitely have a negative impact on our cruising experience.

 

I'm still trying to find out who the CD for Grand Princess is but, so far, haven't had any success with that endeavor. We board Grand for 63 days on September 26 and I'm hoping for a good CD.

I've not personally met or encountered a CD or Captain that I think people should really watch out for. YMMV - there are some anecdotes that people have shared in this thread about their more negative opinions on certain folks, but I don't remember who they were -- you might have to read through the pages. The only culture clash thing that I can think of that could arise is basically the dry humor from the British captains and CDs -- I've got no issue, but it might strike some as too cold. Overall, I've found a majority of the public-facing folks nice and receptive.

Princess is more traditional and more formal than any of those lines you have mentioned. It's much less party than Carnival but a lot less serious than Cunard. I really do not know how to explain this because each line is an experience that is hard to put into words. If you have additional Princess-specific questions, I'd suggest moving the discussion out of this specific thread as it's limited to just cruise staff discussion.

I concur with Thrak and that applies to captains as well. While some people take the view that the captain doesn't matter as the captain is there to steer the ship, when a captain is keeping an eye on the entire operation, people below him notice and things are better. I've been on a cruise with a captain whose eyes were never inside the ship and only looked outward at the ocean and service was not all that great. The Hotel GM knew he wasn't being watched by the captain so he wasn't watching his department heads, and so forth and it showed in the service. I don't really care how personable the captain is on the daily announcements or at the CC reception but I do care that the captain is watching the entire ship and not just concerned about navigating the ship. I've been on two cruises with the same person as captain (have not seen his name post-COVID so he must have retired) and both had service issues because the captain and his senior staff wasn't paying attention inside the ship (did the Ultimate Ship's Tour on one of those and he didn't even show up for the bridge reception that concludes the tour leaving a cadet (student) to host it (I believe the captain is who is supposed to host that reception as when I mentioned it to the CC host on another cruise, she was shocked that the captain had skipped a UST bridge reception).
