Deep cleaning of thermal pool

Does anyone know if it is unusual to do a “Deep Cleaning” of the thermal / thalossotherapy pool in the spa during a cruise?  On the NIeuw Statendam last week and there was a sign posted that said they were closing the thermal pool for a deep cleaning and that it would occur on the last night of the cruise.  Sign stated thermal pool would be closed at 6:00 PM on Saturday (2/8) but that the rest of spa would remain open for use.

Just curious if this is normal and usual?  I have never seen a “deep cleaning” posted before on a cruise.

I believe the thermal pool falls under the USPH classification of "spa pool":

"Spa pool: A POTABLE WATER or saltwater-supplied pool with temperatures and turbulence comparable to a WHIRLPOOL SPA. • Depth of more than 1 meter (3 feet) and • Tub volume of more than 6 tons of water."

and as such it must be drained and cleaned at least every 30 days, so this must be falling on your last day at sea.

Good to know. Sounds like usual maintenance then.  Was just concerned as I thought there may have been an infection  or something going on within our cruise population. I became sick on day of disembarkation so must have unfortunately picked up something on the ship. 😞
